Lice Notice
SMASH
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s)
The presence
of head lice (pediculosis) has been identified in your child’s classroom. Since your child may be exposed to this
infestation, it is important you are aware of the symptoms, treatment
procedures, and your role in the prevention of the spread of this contagious
disease. Head lice can affect
anyone. Prompt treatment and
reporting are essential to control this epidemic.
SYMPTOMS: Persistent itching is the most common
symptom. If your child is constantly
scratching his/her head, check for lice.
A severe infestation can cause inflammation and open sores on the scalp,
and swollen lymph glands in the neck.
EVIDENCE: Adult lice, wingless crawling insects, are
hard to see. Look for the eggs (nits), which are glued to the hair shafts. Nits are tiny, gray-white, teardrop shaped
objects, usually found in clusters above the ears, at the nape of the neck, or
the crown of the head. Compared to
dandruff, which flicks off easily, or hair casts caused by hair spray, which
easily slide up and down the hair shaft, nits adhere tightly to the hair
shaft. They have to be removed manually.
TREATMENT: Check with your physician or purchase a high
quality lice-killing shampoo at your local drugstore. No prescription is needed. Shampoo your child’s hair as directed on the
product label. Rinse well. Vinegar rinse (2 tbsp. white vinegar/1 quart
of hot water) or “detangling” conditioner may help. Dry with a towel. REMOVE ALL NITS using fingernails or a “lice”
comb. For resistant cases you can get prescription shampoo from your health
care provider.
HOME HYGIENE: Examine all family members. If infested, treat promptly. Notify your child’s playmates, who might be
infested. NOTIFY SCHOOL NURSE. Machine wash, in HOT water, all washable
towels, combs, hairbrushes, sheets, pillowcases, and washable clothing. For non-washable articles such as backpacks,
bed pillows and stuffed animals, place in a hot dryer for twenty minutes. For
car seats and fabric seats in your car, clean with a lice spray and vacuum or
park in the hot sun with windows up for a few hours. Wash all surfaces in the
living and sleeping areas, as well as the bathroom(s), especially chair backs.
BEFORE BEING
RE- ADMITTED TO SCHOOL, THE STUDENT MUST BE INSPECTED BY THE NURSE OR THE FRONT
OFFICE PERSONNEL. A CHILD WHO IS FOUND TO HAVE LIVE LICE WILL BE EXCLUDED AGAIN
FROM SCHOOL.

Departments and Health).

CORE 2 NEWS
Please plan on coming to the Overnight Field Trip
discussion April 2nd (Open House evening)
so you can learn about the Catalina trip for next
year's 5th graders. Forms will need to be filled out and deposits to be made
via credit card, paypal or check/cash. Next year's 5th and 6th
graders will be going to Catalina in October.
Please join Genie for the informational meeting at
7:00pm in Core 3.
Spring
has, well…sprung! This energy/weather/social atmosphere can make it
harder for students to focus at school (and at home). Dr. Seuss/Read Across America Day reminded us
how important it is to read (and laugh).
The author of Lulu in La La Land shared her passion for writing
with us. We showed just how much we do
love about all the interesting ways we
learn and ways we show others what we’ve learned in theme/science at
conferences. They demonstrated how
important it is to have a variety of problem-solving strategies at your
fingertips as a mathematician. Thank
you for supporting your child as a reader, writer, mathematician, researcher,
historian, scientist, musician,
athlete, and community member.
Third
Grade Dance starts next Wednesday and
runs for several weeks. These sessions
will replace PE, and Coach Tony will be joining the fun.
Mimi’s
time in Core 2 is coming to a close. It was fun to see all the cool work she did
with the kids! We hope she knows how
much we all appreciate her dedication to Core 2 and SMASH. Jayme will be returning on Monday, March 31. We have awesome plans for the last 9 weeks of
school.
Spring
is a great time to make a renewed commitment to choosing Just Right Books for
independent reading at school and at home. Please read the following tips for ways to help your child become the
best reader s/he can be to get the most out of reading homework.
The
Goldilocks Strategy for Choosing Books: Do
you remember Goldilocks' quest in the fairy tale "Goldilocks and the Three
Bears" to find the porridge, chair, and bed that were "just right”? A
book can sometimes feel the same way. As Goldilocks found that some porridges
were too hot or too cold and others were just right, readers often have
difficulty finding books that are "just right" and not too hard or
too easy. Reading should always be fun for your child. You want them to
feel confident about the books they read and not frustrated or bored.
Children should read books that are on their level for the optimal reading
experience and growth.
Here
is an easy strategy to help your child pick a book that is just right for
him/her:
~Too
Easy Books. Ask yourself these questions. If you are
answering YES, this book is probably a Too Easy Book for you. 1) Have you read it lots of times
before? 2) Do you understand the story
well? 3) Do you know and
understand almost every word? 4)
Can you read it smoothly?
~Just
Right Books. Ask yourself these
questions. If you are answering YES, this book is probably a Just Right Book
for you. 1) Is this book new to you? 2) Do you understand what you’ve read so
far? 3) Are there just a few
words per page you don’t know? 4) When
you read are some places smooth and some choppy? 5) Can someone help you with this book?
Who?
~Too
Hard Books. Ask yourself these questions. If you are
answering YES, this book is probably a Too Hard Book for you. Give it another
try later or read it with an adult. 1)
Are there more than a few words on a page you don’t know? 2) Are you confused about what is
happening in most of this book? 3)
When you read, does it sound pretty choppy?
From “Lessons from
Goldilocks: Somebody’s Been Choosing My Books But I Can Make My Own Choices
Now!” by Marilyn M. Ohlhausen and Mary Jepsen. The New Advocate, Vol. 5, No. 1,
Winter 1992, p. 36 Norwood, MA: Christopher-Gordon Publishers
The only
way to become a stronger, better reader is by reading Just Right books every
day! At the heart of almost all learning is reading. Students wrote fantasy stories based largely
on what they know - and love – about fantasy books. In Science, students had to read, understand,
and remember information from nonfiction texts to learn about the human body,
nutrition, and electricity. Students
listened to, read independently, and read to each other to learn about American
History. Even mathematicians have to
read!
No matter how busy you may
think you are, you must find time for reading,
or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance.”
- Confucius

Please ask you child about their math homework that comes home on Friday.
5th gr Math
with Genie: We are learning several
different games to practice our decimal understanding. We are also looking at
expanded notation with fractions. Please
take time to practice multiplication, division and subtraction facts with your
child!
Interdisciplinary
Project: Medical Issues: Knowledge of
Diseases, Conditions, and Syndromes and their Inclusion within Society: This week groups spent time practicing giving their
oral presentations with their Prezi slide shows. Students watched each other
present and gave constructive feedback to help make the presentations more
engaging and interesting. Students were reminded that given an oral
presentation involves a bit of the acting skills they have been working on in
art. We are excited to share these presentations with you over the next two
weeks! Please remember to check the schedule to see when your child is sharing.

8th Grade
Humanities - The Secret Life of Bees: the students worked on their literary terms resource
tool, used the tool on their literary terms assessment, compiled their
discussion question with their group, and began answering their discussion
questions. Bee Action Research Project: The students now know the required
components for their bee research project. Each of them have identified a
research question and a potential action they will take. For the next two
weeks, they will be researching, writing, and implementing their action. This
project will culminate in a Bee Fair after spring break. They are using art
time with Julianna to create bee related projects.
Science - Students are working on completing all of the
components for their Evolution unit in their science notebooks. Instead of a
take-home essay assignment as a culmination for this unit, students will be
completing an in-class writing prompt using their science notebooks as a
reference tool. This will occur at the end of next week.
Math - The Algebros are working on the Factoring Polynomial
unit. The Variables are going to do some more work with Linear Systems then
start Exponential Functions. The GUFs
are working on the Functions unit.

7th Grade
Humanities - The students wrote about their own rites and rituals.
They have compiled their discussion
questions with their group. Due Tuesday: complete chapter
organizer, conduct a family interview about rites and rituals and complete a
paragraph about it, and answer discussion questions. Take Action Project: The
students now know the required components for their research project. Most students
have identified a research question and a potential action they will take. For
the next three weeks, they will be researching, writing, and implementing their
action. This project will culminate in a share day after spring break.
Science - Students are working on completing all of the
components for their Evolution unit in their science notebooks. Instead of a
take-home essay assignment as a culmination for this unit, students will be
completing an in-class writing prompt using their science notebooks as a
reference tool. This will occur at the end of next week. We are heading to the
Aquarium on Monday and Wednesday of this coming week and Monday 3/31. Join us
if you can!
Math - “The B.L. Broskis” and “The 42% Mathecols” are working
on three dimensional geometry. “The Mathemagicians” are still working on the
rates of change and slope.
