Dear SMASHing Families:

We are very grateful for the generosity and appreciation you have shown via the retirement celebrations, delicious home-baked summer send-off goodies, and the lovely personal notes. Thank you not only for your generous year-end staff gift but also for trusting us with your wonderful children. We wish you all a terrific summer.

For those who like to plan ahead, the 2012-13 SMASH Calendar of Events can be accessed by going to www.smash.smmusd.org and clicking “Calendar.” I will update it as Restaurant Nights and other events are booked.

Our 2012-2013 staff is an amazing group of professionals with 2 familiar faces in new places as well as someone new to SMASH!

We welcome Ann Serapiglia (the g is silent) as a Core 1 parent and Specialized Academic Instruction Teacher for all four Cores.  Ann has worked with Jessica in a teacher-training program at Pt Dume Elementary, with Chrysta, Graciela, and Darwin on the Special Education team at Will Rogers Learning Community, and she transfers to us from her wonderful recent experiences on the Franklin Elementary staff.  Many on our staff already know and respect her; we look forward to families getting to know her as well.

The teaching teams for the four Cores will be:

Core 1 (K-1-2):Candis, Chrysta, Graciela, and Nadja

Core 2 (3-4):   Jayme, Tamara, and Karin
We celebrate Jayme’s return to the Core 2 team as she brings her extensive training in reading programs, writing supports, differentiation of mathematics instruction, and overall ability to nurture curiosity, collaboration, and spirited leadership with our students.

Core 3 (5-6):   Genie, Erin, Mimi, and Malaika
Mimi has been part of the SMASH community since 1994 in various roles.  Next year, in addition to being a Core 2 Mom, Mimi returns to the SMASH staff part-time sharing her personal passion for mathematics teaching and learning with 6th graders. She will also facilitate research and inquiry-based science projects with Core 3.

Core 4 (7-8):   Darwin, Kurt, and Malaika
