president’s message

Dear SMASHing Parents,

“All hands on deck for SuperSMASH!”
EVERY single family to volunteer a minimum of 1-2 hours to make it happen. Now is the time to step-up. We ALL want to just come and enjoy the carnival - but, if each parent does not sign up for a least 1 hr, then that means another family will have to step up for you and will likely have to spend twice their allotted time (or more) manning a booth/activity. We have to share the workload, in order to share thefun!

If you have small kids, then ask your spouse, a Grandparent, or another Core 1 parent to watch them for you while you do an hour at the Food Booth or the Art Court - pick your passion! But please DO pick something. Many of us (several with small children) are going to be working ALL DAY to make this event as enjoyable as possible for you and your family. So please - sign up now to do at least the bare minimum of 1 hour. Contact Helga at 310-828-8421 or
helgaschier@verizon.net or go on-line to sign-up for your volunteer slot. We are counting on the entire SMASH family to make this event the huge success it always is!

FYI - The SMASH Arts & Letters Sale on June 3rd was a SMASHing success. Thanks to all who helped make this event happen.
Dan McGee

ptsa annual family investment drive
Public school is free – a great education is not. The SMASH Annual Family Investment Drive is almost over for the 2010-1011 school year. Have you participated? If not, please make any contribution in any amount you can afford. We are still aiming for 100% participation in the single most important fundraiser of the year. Give what you can and give as soon as possible. $5 pays for a student’s bus ticket to a museum during a field trip. $50 pays for a two year subscription to a science magazine in one of our cores. $500 pays for Arts Program supplies. Please participate and drop off your donation as soon as possible. Questions? Contact Marni Ayers Brady (marniayers@gmail.com) or Helga Schier (helgaschier@verizon.net)

SMASH bash
If you haven’t participated in a SMASHbash this school year, there are only two events you can still attend. REMEMBER: 100% of all SMASH BASH funds collected goes directly to SMASH. The following events still have space available:
* Tapas and Drinks - NEW DATE - June 18 (Adults Only)
* Tacos, Mojitos & Legos -NEW DATE- June 24 (FRI) 4:30 pm (Kids and Adults)
Please contact Marni Ayers Brady (marniayers@gmail.com) and sign-up for one of these remaining events.

GREEN TIP FOR THE WEEK
No Shoes For a Greener, Cleaner Home: The soles of your shoes are not only carrying dirt and small rocks, but they are also responsible for bringing in pesticides, lead and other pollutants from lawns, roads and other surfaces that can contaminate indoor air. According to a study conducted by Rockport shoe company and the University of Arizona, the outside of a regular pair of shoes, after 14 days wear, accommodates a whole host of bacteria, including E. coli. By
taking off your shoes at the door regularly, 70% of the dirt that carries those germs and toxins can be avoided. Apart from living in a less toxic environment and reducing your indoor air pollution, you'll have a cleaner home and save time and energy from vacuuming regularly. thedailygreen.com

CORE 2 NEWS
Week in Review
Advisory: turns out this week was longer and busier—full of moving up days, guest speakers, a community walk, a fifth grade concert, SuperSMASH decorations, a SMASHing spirit day, and cooking! Can you believe next week is our last full week of school?

Theme: we finished our mini-investigation into California’s Gold Rush with Laura. Next week will be our final research/investigation of California’s Statehood. In science, we read about (with Tamara) and experimented with (with our 8th grade leaders Jules and Nile) energy, matter, physical and chemical changes. Ask your child about the different states of matter and how those states can be changed. Next week we will take a test (!) to show what we’ve learned about physics and chemistry.

Literacy: in RW we’ve been listening to our read aloud and reading our JR books. The only way to get better at reading is by reading and you need to read for 30-45 minutes every day!
In WW the Meatball Heads continued to collect ideas for poems, write original poems, write “inspired by” poems, and discuss the things they notice about various poems—alliteration, onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors, personification, format, rhythm, rhyme, etc. Next week we will be publishing/sharing 2 – 3 of our favorite poems in a “Poetry Slam!” Moo started a mini-comics unit.

Math: Laura’s 3rd graders investigated the strategies to add and subtract 3 digit numbers.
Tamara’s 4th graders “Why?” they ask, “Why do we have to add and subtract using different strategies, if we already know how to add and subtract?” “Because…” Tamara said patiently after yet another TERC Math epiphany, “each strategy helps you understand numbers and get better at math in a different way - so just try it, even if you already know how to do it another way!” Next week, we will be wrapping up fractions & decimals, and multiplication & division (leftovers from previous units). We did it!!!

Things to do:
*RW HW: PLEASE RETURN ALL LIBRARY BOOKS. Read every night at home.
*WW HW: L’s Advisory – Collect ideas for and make comics that tell stories at home.
T’s Advisory - We will be sharing our poems next week, so make sure you have 5 poems to choose from.
*Word Work HW: Core 2 Students - have fun practicing grammar and spelling and punctuation!
*3G Math HW: addition/subtraction worksheets due Friday, June 17
*4G Math HW: fractions & decimals worksheets due Friday, June 17
*3G & 4G Musicians: Please fill out and return your 4G & 5G music class/instrument preference form and return by Tuesday, June 14.
*3G Dancers: please wear jeans, a white shirt, and a tie for your dance performance W 6/15.

Dates for you:
Wednesday, June 15, 12:00-12:30 – Last 3rd grade dance - parents/visitors welcome
Friday, June 17 – last Friday letter, take all work home!!! It’s been a great year full of RW, WW, Theme, Art, Fun, and CARES!
Monday, June 20, 10:30 – 12:30 Field Day sponsored by Student Council, 1:30 dismissal
Tuesday, June 21, 10:00 8th grade graduation, 1:30 dismissal
Wednesday, June 22 – Beach Day, 1:30 dismissal & last day of this school year!
Wish List, too:
~Please let us know if you’ d like to be part of our “Core 2 beautification team” to do a few small projects over the summer or on Parent work day (window sheers, cushion covers for patio furniture, painting)

Laura: lsherman@smmusd.org -

Tamara: tmugalian@smmusd.org -

Jayme: j.wold@smmusd.org

8th Grade Graduation - Tuesday, June 21 at 10am and all SMASH luncheon to follow.
SMASH is asking each family to bring a fruit or dessert dish or a $10 donation. Thanks!

CORE 3 NEWS

Thanks, Holly (Rhu's mom), for joining us on our Field Trip to SM Courthouse! We learned a little about the local court system and their civil cases as well as the ethics involved in our legal system.

Core 3 Fun Day Thursday (10:30-2:30) can only happen if students bring in their $10 food donation and we have enough chaperones to keep us all safe. Please let Genie know if you can chaperone. Please remember what sporting equipment you signed up to bring: Soccer balls: Rhu and Ian, Cones: Brighton and Ian, Tennis Racket: Ian, Tennis Balls: Andrew, Footballs: Rhu, Shaquil, and Noah, Volleyballs: Sophie and Lydia, Beach ball: Liam

6th gr Math w/ Carrie: We continued our unit on decimals by working on our addition, subtraction, and multiplication skills. We looked at why 0.02 x 0.03 is 0.0006 . For many of us, that seems impossible for the answer to be so small. We converted the decimals to fractions and used what we knew about multiplying fractions to help us see why this is true. Next week we will look at dividing decimals.
6th gr Math w/ Erin: Students continued working on their circle data - measuring radius and diameter of various circle shapes around school and figuring out the circumference and area using the formulas that they've learned. Students worked on groups to display their data in clear and creative ways.

5th gr Math w/ Genie: With more practice, the mathematicians are getting used to using doubling and halving as a multiplication strategy. I hope they think about it when they come across a large number multiplication problem. They can even use it when memorizing their facts. For example if they know 8x6=48 then they can know 4x12=48 because they know to half 8 and double 6. Some are beginning to mentally quadruple and fourth quickly as well which is just
doubling and halving twice.

Science: Our clinics are busy diagnosing their patients. These patients have so many issues, it's important for our budding doctors to be very thoughtful about how to help them. The doctors have been quite thorough and asking great questions to help them narrow in on the most important issues affecting their patient. A few of the current thoughts about the issues affecting the patients include: diabetes, pregnancy, alcoholism, and depression. Next week the doctors
will talk with their patients about their recommendations for treatments and lifestyle changes.

Social Studies/Geography: Trying to get in as much work time as possible over these last few days. We read aloud a short story by Gish Jen called, "Who's Irish?" and talked about the challenges of trying to bridge cultural ways from a country of origin with the norms of the United States. Students also worked diligently to complete their immigrant mapproject.

Reading Workshop
: Stargirl has been an interesting book. It brings up the topic of conformity and nonconformity. We will begin discussing next week as we get further into the book about if SMASH welcomes nonconformity or do we still expect conformity but just have a wider range of what is acceptable. Please make sure your child is reading a just right book every day and bringing it to school every day. Please help your child look every where in their house for library books. The librarians are asking for all books to be returned.
Writing Workshop: We have been discussing different ways to gather ideas in our notebooks. We know just like reading every day, writing every day is an important part of being a learner. So we have looked at some spot cartoons as inspiration to help us write a little and draw a little in our writing notebooks all summer long. They often expect readers to infer, understand play on words, and make readers laugh

Homework:
6g Math: Assignment #3 is due 6/13
5g Math: Packet #31 is DUE 6/17. Last homework packet for the year! Please have your child memorize their multiplication and division facts over the summer if they need to!
RW: Read nonfiction "Tablet Talk" article and mark it up by Wednesday.
WW: hist. fiction pieces due Fri 6/17. Collect ideas in notebook like spot cartoons ideas.

8th Grade Graduation - Tuesday, June 21 at 10am and all SMASH luncheon to follow. SMASH is asking each family to bring a fruit or dessert dish or a $10 donation. Thanks!

CORE 4 NEWS

Graduates: It is difficult, bordering on impossible, to describe the bittersweet feelings that sweep deeply through a teacher’s heart as students transition from our classrooms and care into exciting new experiences in high school. One is filled with feelings of loss, pride, joy, hopefulness, fear, and enduring optimism. A heady stew of emotions that does not admit of easy definition; it is not science, but the unruly world of emotion and personal connection. In the end, one has to wish them adieu while trusting that they will find people who care for them as much as we do. We are fortunate in that many of our alumni return to fill mentoring roles their younger brethren. This salves the feelings of loss that accompany this season of celebration.

Graduation rehearsal is Monday, June 20 at 9:00am

Graduation is Tuesday, June 21 at 10:00am

Current 7th grade students: For those who missed the parent information evening, we will have more evenings next year to look at adolescent needs and how we address them at SMASH

7th grade families: SMASH is asking that each family contribute to the 8th grade graduation and all school luncheon - a $10 cash donation or bring a dessert or fruit dish.
