FRIDAY LETTER 03-20-09

Dear SMASHing Families,

27% of SMASH Families attended the Math Parent Education morning this week. Fantastic at 8:15am!

100% of the attendees thought about the K-8 strand of SMASH math instruction around multiplication and division concepts.

Here are some key points from the presentation and resulting conversation:

“At SMASH, teachers do the math thinking along with the students and everyone learns from each other’s strategies. We are versatile math thinkers who want others to be able to follow our process.”

“Students develop a deep understanding of what they are computing before the traditional American algorithms for multiplication and division are introduced in 4th and 5th grade.”

“It is too easy in this country to say I am not good at math. We do not say I am not a good reader because that would not be ok. We need to make this cultural shift.”

“Solve the problem in two ways does not mean stacking the numbers horizontally and vertically.”

“Let’s push ourselves to show our thought process for approaching a problem.” For example,

243 divided by 11
11x2=22
11x20=220

243-220=23
11x2=22
20+2=22
220+22=242

243 divided by 11 equals 22 remainder 1

“People talk about needing to read 15 minutes a day. Do 15 minutes of math a day as a family which can include board games, card games, baking, grocery store calculations…”

Let us know ways you build in the 15 daily math minutes as a family!
Jessica

The PTSA Budget Crisis: A Note from your PTSA Presidents
Every school year around the half way point PTSA reviews its budget projections, checking whether our fundraising efforts were successful and our spending estimates accurate. This year, unfortunately, we have to ring the alarm bell.
Our major fundraisers are suffering the effects of the economic crisis. While we’ve been able to make some extra money with new fundraisers, we are about $25,000 short of our projections. The bottom line is, we are in a BUDGET CRISIS.
Considering the state of the world economy, this is not surprising; but it is alarming. The PTSA budget has a direct impact on each and every child at SMASH. Here’s why: PTSA funds numerous school essentials. From teacher assistant salaries to financing the arts and Spanish programs to underwriting the office copy machine to field trips, PTSA literally keeps the school moving. Therefore we HAVE to make sure that we can meet our financial responsibilities, not only this year, but also next and the one after that. Particularly because we do not yet know the impact of the new budget on Santa Monica public schools.
We have no doubt that this IS possible. SMASH is such an amazing community of students, teachers and parents, all of whom have come through when necessary in years past.
This year we need you more than ever before.
PTSA will 1.) Increase fundraising efforts throughout the rest of the year, and 2.) Curb spending as much as possible without cutting essential programs.
We will initiate a spring push for the Family Donation Drive to reach our goal of 100% participation. If you have not yet contributed, please do so. If you already have, perhaps you can give more? No amount is too big or too small. Here’s a paypal link for for your convenience https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=846663We are looking for new fundraising opportunities that involve the larger Santa Monica community. Please consider joining our fundraising team. We need people to help write grants, find businesses to underwrite a Core Project, and people with new fundraising ideas. We will meet on Tuesday, March 24 at 6:30PM. Please contact April Motola (aprilmotola@me.com).
We have to do what we can to make SuperSMASH a success. Please make an extra effort to get Silent Auction donations, and invite family, friends, neighbors and colleagues. We need to get the larger Santa Monica community involved!
Make no mistake: this budget crisis is real.
But together we can make sure that SMASH stays the thriving community it is. We need your participation in the spring push of the Family Donation Drive. We need your help with new and old fundraising efforts. We need you involved. In a time like this there is no better place to invest (time and money) than your child’s education.
Renew your commitment to SMASH now. Together we can make it through this crisis.
Thank you!

CORE 2
A celebration of writing! We hope you can stop by and see the children’s All About Books on Tuesday, March 24 at 9:15 am. Our students may be in different stages of the writing process, so you can check out the process in action. This opportunity allows students to share the finished project if they’re done, and all the work and writing pieces that came together to create the final piece. Parents will have the chance to listen to and read various All About Books. This project was the students’ chance to teach us about their area of expertise. Their books cover a wide range of topics! See you there!

The Pancakes had a fabulous time visiting the Santa Monica City Council. They had the chance to see what a City Council meeting looks like and have a mock voting session. Ask your child what they learned while on the trip. Thank you to the parents that went with us!

What fun we have on field trips! Our next field trip is right around the corner. On Thursday, March 26 we will be taking the Big Blue Bus to UCLA’s Freud Playhouse to see Hoi Polloi: My Uncle Arly. For more information, see the Design for Sharing website. We will be leaving at 8:35 am, eating a snack there, watching the play, and then staying for lunch. Each student needs to bring their own snack and lunch. We will return to SMASH by 2:00 pm. Please return the attached permission slip ASAP. As always, we need adult help on these trips. Sign up outside Core 2 or let us know if you would like to attend. Your help is much appreciated!

Math: The 3rd graders are working on measuring and comparing measurements. The 2nd graders have worked hard on symmetry! They have completed a symmetrical drawing and thought about the elements that make the picture symmetrical. Students used mirrors to assist them. We have come to an end of this unit and will begin to review what we have learned so far this year! So much information and mathematical thinking! Our next unit will begin after Spring Break.

Arts with Kristy began! We spent time talking about fables and folktales. Core 2 will eventually be writing and acting in our own stories. Ask your child about what they hope to do in arts this session.

Core 2’s 2nd Annual Potato Parade was fantastic! We were so impressed with all the creative and amazing designs. Thank you to all the parents that helped your child at home and to those that paraded with Core 2. These celebrations are very special to our community. Each potato brought a smile to the faces throughout SMASH!

Wish list: plastic spoons for our Bake Sales and Birthday Bashes

Upcoming dates and events:
Tuesday, March 24 – “All About Books” writing celebration, 9:15 in Core 2.
Thursday, March 26 – field trip to UCLA’s Freud Playhouse to see Hoi Polloi: My Uncle Arly
Friday, April 3- Beach Day! Last day before Spring Break!

Cheers to Genie for sharing our school-wide vision and curriculum for math—and cheers to the nearly 40 families who attended our Parent Ed Morning Tuesday (if you tell 2 friends, and they tell 2 friends…)

Here at SMASH, we try to honor the whole child—mind, body, and soul, which is why we use Responsive Classroom as our well-researched, well-planned social curriculum. Of course, we try to utilize the theory of Multiple Intelligences with a variety of ways to learn and express information. We also support the district Music and P.E. programs, along with our amazing SMASHing Arts program, as part of our core curriculum. And as important as our academic curriculum is, it would not be successful without our social curriculum--especially CARES (Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy and Self-Control).

Recently, we have taken time in our Morning Meetings and Magic Circle to focus on making ‘new’ friends, as well as coping with changes in ‘old’ friendships. We recognize that we often choose the same people to work with, play with and eat with every day—and that, for some of us, it’s been the same people since Core 1. In Core 3, we usually welcome 4 – 6 new students each year. We’ve played games to get to know new people during Morning Meeting and made plans to include them at a snack time, games in the yard, or activities during quiet time. We may not become best buddies with everyone, but we can be mindfully inclusive and considerate. Another issue we’ve been exploring is how to balance friendships within a group or between more than one group. The kids acknowledge that there are a lot of pressures in these situations and they use Magic Circle, meetings with Malaika, Genie, and Tamara, and, of course, conversations with you to negotiate tricky friendship territory. Ask your child some of the ways they have included a ‘new’ friend or worked through friendships issues recently. We respect the importance of these issues in their lives and believe that healthy relationships and good social skills are key to success in life!

Core 2 and Core 3 participated in a Sustainability Workshop/Assembly on Wednesday. The students have already done so many amazing things to make SMASH a more sustainable community. We applaud their interest and efforts, and look forward to boosting our participation in old ideas (recycling, composting, eating healthy foods, “green” cleaning, and reducing paper waste) and introducing new ideas (celebrating Earth Day, regular “zero trash” lunch days, school-wide community snack, and community service). Through our partnership with the City of Santa Monica Sustainable Works folks we hope to increase our personal and community environmental awareness and stewardship.
Upcoming Events:
~ Earth Day Poster Contest
~ SMASH Greenraising fundraiser
~ Community Sustainable Living workshop
~ Earth Day “Zero-Trash” Lunch celebration

Another way we honor the whole individual is community snack. The goal of community snack is to provide a weekly time to explore the foods we eat and how that helps our bodies/minds. This is why we ask that community snack contain a whole grain, a vegetable or fruit, and a protein. More importantly, community snack is an opportunity to try new foods. Studies show that children are willing to try new foods with peers. Goldfish, cheese, and apple slices are favorites and enjoyed by most students. However, trying goat cheese with fresh figs and multi-grain crackers is new--and lettuce wraps filled with tofu, veggies, and bonito flakes is new and different! We know prepping snack for 48 kids is not easy on a Sunday night, but the healthy food experience and the community spirit of sharing food is wonderful. Thanks to all the families for signing up and bringing in goodies and a special SHOUT OUT to Jeannine Varner for organizing and reminding parents of their responsibilities.

Check out our Core 3 Webpage (Genie’s link) to see pictures from this week’s Community Snack!

Take some time to nurture your mind, body, and soul this weekend!

BAILEY: Every student did an amazing job on their ancient Greek Individual presentation. They were informative, creative and well rehearsed! There are a few students who still need to present on Monday, so please ask your child and help them remember and prepare! THANK YOU to all parents and staff who made the Getty Villa field trip possible and a huge success. The students got so much out of it with all their preparation reading and researching of Ancient Greek life and mythology. I could not of "pulled it off" without all the help and support. All students have a free guest pass to the Villa for a full car of family and friends and you do not even need a reservation with this card!!! Please return and share the inspiring art and history with your student. On March 31 we will hold the culminating event to the Greek unit with a Panathenea- a Greek festival honoring the gods with drama, altars, food and athletics, just as the ancient Greeks honored their patron deity. If anyone can help on that day please let me know!!! - Cheers, Bailey

KELLY:
6/7 Math: Let’s Look from a Different Angle
After various activities and explorations over the past few weeks, the mathematicians now have a wide repertoire of geometric properties. They are now ready to begin categorizing and constructing various two and three-dimensional shapes. This categorizing conversation even started at our Getty Villa venture! In one of the galleries, a tiled floor with an optical illusion was created by the tessellation of a rhombus. One of the students said, “Look at the way that squares can create an optical illusion!”. I chimed in with the wonderment, “How do we know it is a square?”. The other child in the group said, “Well…we can check the angles and see if they are square corners.” He then bent down with the piece of paper from his clipboard to test the tessellated shapes angles. Sure enough, he and the rest of the group realized it was not a square, but another category of shapes! Our discovered properties that we now know will help drive our conversations around geometric shapes, just as this one did. We will also look to use these everyday experiences and examples to start and grow our conversations about geometry. After adding obtuse, right, and acute angles to our property repertoire this week, we will delve into isosceles, scalene, and equilateral triangles next week.
Algebra
“So we’ve been looking at graphs in this whole unit, why are we studying sequences of numbers all of the sudden?” expressed one engaged and puzzled student. This insightful observation and question helped start our discussion of arithmetic sequences this week. Students discovered that what graphs and sequences have in common is that a relationship between the numbers exists. In graphing, it is the way y is dependent on x, and in arithmetic sequences, the terms are related because of a common difference. The students started to grasp this idea toward the latter part of the week. Next week, we will review Chapter 4 and take the test early in the week (most likely on Tuesday).

KURT
Super Secret Lined Paper Advisory: Thank you parents for joining us in mass quantities for the Getty trip. We had a great time visiting this local landmark. Back at school we are continuing our work on physical, verbal, and personal space boundaries to good effect. Spring has sprung in the middle school with interesting and invigorating influence on our young people and things are lively indeed!
Ciencia: We are moving into the analysis and communicating results portion of our independent investigations. The stimulating environment created by student scientists sawing wood, caring for myriad small, smelly animals, or avidly discussing a result while measuring rock candy crystals are subsiding into a quiet hum of excitement as they prepare presentation boards, power-points, and consider next questions! I am taking photos of this process to share with everyone, but to truly understand how much our young scientist have achieved you should drop around during your child’s science class. The parents who have done this in the past have really enjoyed the experience and the kids often remember your presence fondly late in life. Imagine their surprise if you just showed up. Please do visit.

The spring semester is shaping up to be “big serious fun.” Core 4 is working with an integrating thematic idea of “How can I be my best self.” The science portion of our joint theme will translate into "How can I be my best self in terms of my physical and mental health?" Specifically, science learning groups will be:
· Using 23% of their time to work with food and nutrition expert Jo-e Sutton leading and me helping and coaching
· Researching and creating a personalized wellness plan that incorporates physical and mental elements of wellness. (Writing piece)
· Working our minds and bodies 27% of the time using interval training, games, and meditation techniques to develop and practice situational awareness.
· Investigating the commonalities and differences of scientific and social theories of human evolution through guided discussions, dialogue and formal debate.
8th graders will be doing high school prep to enhance their readiness for high school biology classes. Their spring will involve portions of the health and wellness unit, an egg baby project, and direct instruction organized around “big ideas” in biology.
This science unit is well suited to multiple perspectives and educational research makes it clear that young brains thrive when many adults are involved in their science training. Please consider joining us to offer your sense of how to be healthy and well.
