Monday, September 28 - Admissions Day Observed
SCHOOL CLOSED

Dear SMASHing Families,
Last year a team from Latvia, this year a team from Japan! We are a destination of interest to educators from across the US and around the world, and we are grateful for these exchanges that provide us with insights into our own practices and community.
The Institute for Project Based Learning in Japan is bringing 15 progressive educators plus interpreter to SMASH next Friday, October 2nd 8:00am-noon.
They are in the United States doing four school immersions in Minnesota (rural) and four immersions in California (urban). If you are around campus next Friday, you are encouraged to share answers with our guests to their questions: What is the mission of our school and how are we different? What makes our school successful?
Our visitors may be interested in asking questions of family members, students and staff through their interpreter. They are most interested in the overall environment of the school, and they are particularly interested in the urban model of schools since many of the visitors live near or around Tokyo.
Thanks to the student and parent tour guides who will be helping out that day!
Truly yours,Jessica

CORE 1 FORUM
Thank you so much for coming to, and participating in, our Core 1 Forum. We enjoyed getting to know you better, and look forward to a wonderful year. If you were not able to make it, we can help you connect with a buddy parent to find out what you missed. There will be a packet for you in your Friday Folder.

CORE 2 NEWS
Our community building was focused around Assertiveness – communicating what we need. We brainstormed how it would look in Core 2.
In Reading Workshop, the children explored our books and discussed their connection with the characters and the setting. Each child may bring one book from home to keep in her/his cubby.
In Writing Workshop, we have learned that writers write about topics that they care about. The students added addition info to their stories (revising), learned some editing marks and wrote a short author’s blurb to be displayed with their writing. They have learned characteristics of a personal narrative, a true event in their lives.
Math: The 2nd graders have become investigators. They are conducting whole group surveys to answer questions they are wondering about. In addition to collecting and organizing data, the children are learning a lot about each other.
The 3rd graders continued working on Things That Come In Groups by writing a math story in the style of Each Orange Has 8 Slices by Paul Giganti, Jr. Their published stories will be on display in time for our Core 2 Forum.
Laura and Graciela were Stars of the Week on Wednesday. They shared pictures and personal treasures with their advisory group. They provided healthy food for a Community Snack before Break. Next week we began having a child in each advisory group be Stars. He or she will have an opportunity to share a favorite piece of literature (book, poem, song, story) and a planned activity (with advisor help) for the class to interact with. Your child may also share up to three special treasures with the class. Children may bring small collections, trophies, souvenirs, favorite toys, pets, etc. NO ELECTRONIC GAMES! Please let us know in advance if your child will be bringing a pet. The pet will have to go home immediately following the Star of the Week presentation. Also, your child will be able to share 5 pictures of themselves, family, or friends. Parents and siblings are encouraged to attend this presentation on Wednesdays at 9:00am.
This year your child is asked to bring a healthy community snack to share with the whole core (46 children) at Break. We would like this to be a time where your child would share her/his family’s favorite foods. It should include a protein (for example: cheese, yogurt, humus), a whole grain carbohydrate (i.e. chips, crackers, or bread) and a vegetable or fruit (i.e. apple slices, carrot sticks). PLEASE NO PEANUT OR NUT PRODUCTS!
This does require advanced planning, so if you have any questions about what to do or what to bring, please contact us as soon as possible. We have worked out the amount of weeks with the amount of students, so there will be NO makeup days. If your child is the new star, they will have these directions and information attached to their Friday papers.
Next week is an all SMASH Assembly and the following week is our school picture day. So, our next Stars are on Wednesday, October 14. They will be: Morgan Jarow and Abbie Grossman.

Thank you!
To the PTSA for the t-shirts and supplies for our tie-dying and to Ari (Core3) and Mica’s (Core 4) Mike for organizing all the parent volunteers and the children

Dates to remember:
Monday, September 28: school holiday
Thursday, October 1: Core 2 forum, 6:00 to 7:30 PM Childcare is provided
Friday, October 2 – September Birthday Bash 11:45. If your child was born in September, please read the attached ½ sheet that will explain how Core 2 celebrates birthdays.
Enjoy the 3-day weekend!

CORE 3 NEWS
Happy Friday, Core 3 Families!
We will be using the Friday Letter to relay information to you about the how’s, what’s, and why’s behind our teaching and learning in Core 3. To find out the specific things your child explores, learns, and practices each week--please ask your child, using the Friday letter information as a prompt. In Core 3, how we learn/practice reading. writing, math, and citizenship is just as important as what we learn in each area. We emphasize the process over the content. We also try to make sure students understand the why behind all of our strategies/lessons, routines/structures, and rules/guidelines. This week’s Friday Letter explains why we use the Responsive Classroom approach.

Responsive Classroom is one of the curricular foundations at SMASH and is used school-wide (K-8). The continuity of this social curriculum is a key element to many of SMASH’s successes in all curricular areas. “The Responsive Classroom is an approach to elementary teaching that emphasizes social, emotional, and academic growth in a strong and safe school community. The goal is to enable optimal student learning.” Not only is social growth an important part to a child’s life, it facilitates stronger academic growth. The curriculum emphasizes a student’s individual sense of belonging, importance, and fun within the context of a community of learners with common goals and expectations. It is used in all areas throughout the day.

If you’d like to read more information about Responsive Classroom please check out the following website and read the introduction chapter to Parents and Teachers Working Together, a Responsive Classroom publication. http://www.responsiveclassroom.org/bookstore/rp_parentsteachers.html (click on introduction pdf file)

Dates to Remember:
No School - Monday, September 28
Core 3 Forum - Tuesday, September 29, 6:00-7:30
Core 3 Assembly - The Olympians (Genie’s advisory) will lead the All-school Morning Meeting in the cafetorium, Wednesday, 8:45-9:15.
The next Core 3 assembly will be led by The Awesome People (Tamara’s advisory).

For your information:
Tamara and Genie will be attending a district Pictorial Math Workshop (the goal of this workshop is to help us enable students to make meaning of the math rules they will be learning in the future) Thursday, October 1

Have a great 3-day weekend!

CORE 4
The Big Old Biscuits (Kelly’s Advisory)
Here it finally is…the unveiling of our Advisory name! After a week of brainstorming ideas for an Advisory name (others included ACRONYM, Skittlicious, Pass, What’s our Name…), we voted to determine our identity for this year. I must say that we are truly living up to our name by taking on our responsibilities and holding ourselves accountable to the discussed expectations exactly as…big old biscuits would?! Becoming comfortable with our peers, understanding the expectations of this new academic year, and serious work on our declarations have all been a part of our Advisory work this week. Ask your child about the powerful work they have done around changing goals into declarations!
Math
We continue to sweat the small stuff in Math Workshop. Over this past week, the mathematicians discovered the various resources that are available to them in our class. Partnerships, binders, and math materials held as our focus. Students now have an understanding of how using these effectively can set them up for success. Throughout this discussion of responsibilities and resources, students continued to review their computational skills and strategies with various operations (multiplication and division). I encourage you to talk with your child about their math responsibilities and resources to reinforce our push toward independence and competence.
On Monday in sixth and seventh grade math, we will begin our first formal unit. This unit will focus on pre-Algebra concepts. It will build on the students’ conceptual understanding of complex patterns, whole-number operations, and discovering unknown quantities. They will discover how to represent, analyze, and generalize a variety of patterns with words, symbolic rules, and equations. Developing a conceptual understanding of different uses of variables will be at the heart of this unit. Kelly

Catalina Notes
The decision is made about trip transportation and it is good news despite being a change from previous practices.
For all trips parents will be responsible for transportation of the kids to a designated gathering spot. In the case of Catalina this will be the ferry terminal near the Queen Mary, for Yosemite we gather at the train station like last year, and for Hess Kramer we shall meet at the camp's south gate.
This an enormous positive in that the hassle factor for parents decreases enormously leaving them with only one clearly defined task. A further advantage is that each may make the arrangements with people they trust in an organic and natural manner. Car pools are encouraged!
I will be present at each gathering spot, ready to assume responsibility, early enough so that parents may perform their transportation duty before traffic builds to nightmarish proportions. For example: I will be at the Catalina ferry by 07:30 on 10/12 ready to organize the students and available by cell phone starting at 05:00. Please make your arrangements soon.
Next week you will get a driver's map, packing list, food preferences list and a critical medical form from the camp. I will send them just as soon as the camp gets them to me.
We are considering opening the trip to older students who for whatever reason did not go in previous years. Please email me right away if you are interested in this option.
Hope this helps. Please drop around or email if I may help in any way. Kurt

Hello Core 4 families,
Thank you to everyone who made time for attending the Tuesday night forum. I know it is difficult to fit all the meetings into our busy lives, and sometimes we just cannot be everywhere. If you missed it and would like to chat, feel free to call. The discussion is about the content of the year and the specific units I will cover generated ideas. The options are still percolating in my head. I am weighing what has been taught in Core 4 the last few years and what graduating 8th graders should know with the 3 year structure I would like to create to make certain the major time periods and places are covered. Finally we want to teach to students areas of interest as well. If you has strong thoughts about this which you have not shard yet, please send me an email.
IN HUMANITIES this week students finished a draft of an interview they conducted of a classmate. They presented them to the class as well. This allowed them to get to know classmates, building community and the oral presentations built respect and risk taking in the classroom. A FINAL DRAFT of the interview is DUE TUESDAY (5 paragraphs). The kids have mostly had peer editors; however if you would like also give your kid feedback that would be lovely. We are working on paragraph organization and showing not telling and descriptive language.
IN WRITERS WORKSHOP for the BLUE group students must have 6 entries in their notebook. One with dialogue and most in the genre of personal narrative. They must have a draft of one personal narrative for class on Tuesday for peer editing.
We will start BOOK CLUBS on Thursday. Students will have to read 20 minutes a night starting next Thursday.
Finally, progress reports may go home this Friday focusing on the social curriculum and the CARES. I have given my input to the kids advisors for the report. Next Friday, full progress reports will go home. Bailey

Enjoy the 3-Day Weekend!
