FRIDAY LETTER 05-29-09

A BIG HUGE THANK YOU!
To every single one of you who helped get us ready for SuperSMASH.

Thank you for …

getting donations,
logging and labeling items,
writing the Silent Auction catalogue,
designing our postcards and posters and distributing them,
placing advertisements, designing decorations, getting refreshments,
creating a menu and promising to cook, organizing games, buying food,
bringing in canopies, baking cakes, buying prizes,
creating Core Art Projects, printing buttons,
this, that and the other …
the list is endless.

And then there are those who have volunteered
to set up or run a booth or be cashier or help clean up tomorrow.
Thanks just for promising to be there!

Come to the Volunteer Sign-Up Station near the Main Office
at least five minutes before you are scheduled to work,
so we can direct you.

And then …
HAVE FUN OUT THERE!
SuperSMASH…tomorrow…11:30 to 5:30…be there!

Dear SMASHing Families,
Micah and Eli (my 4 and 2 year old sons) have been practicing throwing little balls in a basket hoping to win another fish this year, Mitch (my husband) has t-shirts ready to tye-die for our family, Gene and Lois (my Dad and Stepmom/ “Other Mother”) will be scouting the Silent Auction for items. My family is excited for SuperSMASH this Saturday, and I look forward to spending a fun-filled day with all of you.

The last three weeks of school bring learning celebrations, year-end school traditions, narratives, and more.

Please join us for this year’s final Arts Sharing Assembly on Wednesday, June 3
8:45-9:30am Singing with Core 3 and Core 4
10:40-12:10 Core 2 Puppet Shows of Fables complete with Foley casting
10:30-12:00 Core 1 Visual Art Exhibit
10:30-12:00 Core 4 Gallery Walk of the “How to be My Best Self” Science/Math/Humanities Timelines
1:00pm Core 4 Visual Art Exhibit

Friday, June 5 is Ride Your Bike Day in the City of Santa Monica. Please make sure to wear a helmet and bring a lock and chain for your bike.

I promised to keep you updated about the budget based on my participation on the Superintendent’s Budget Committee and the committee’s potential recommendations to the School Board. Since last week’s ballot measures 1a and 1b did not pass, CA schools will receive significantly less than presented in the February state adopted budget. For SMMUSD, this means we need to cut $14 Million in expenditures over the next 3 years in order to have a balanced budget. I will keep you posted as School Board members make decisions about 09-10 class sizes at the June 4th School Board meeting and as decisions about other revenue enhancements and reductions in expenditures are made throughout next year.

Truly Yours,
Jessica

THE SMASH CAMPING TRIP a—fantastic mini “staycation!”

Camping is a great outdoor activity that comes in many flavors: from the
wild to the mild.
Wild: backpack‐in expeditions favored by the seriously outdoorsy.
Mild: the cabin‐style experience where you enjoy the outdoors without leaving behind many of the creature comforts of home.
So where in this range is the SMASH Camping Trip at Decker Canyon? Much closer to the mild side, for sure.
An easy drive up PCH, the facility offers free hot‐water showers, built‐in hibachis for grilling with charcoal, and is minutes away from conveniences like the Trancas Canyon Market and cafes (yes, including Starbucks). Tents get pitched adjacent to the parking area so there’s no long‐distance lugging of gear from car to campsite.
What about activities? There’s hiking starting at the campsite as well as several secluded beaches just a few minutes away by car. Campers generally bring games like horseshoes, badminton, Frisbees, hacky sacks, etc.
Never set up a tent before? No problem. Many seasoned “camping families” are perennial attendees, so there’ll be plenty of help available.
So come on out and enjoy a night or two “under the stars!” Still unsure? Then roll out with the family for a daytrip to the campsite on Saturday the 6th—plenty to do!
The SMASH Camping Trip 2009: one night, two nights, or daytrip—make some memories outside! June 5th and 6th at Decker Canyon Campground in Malibu.

“Maybe we could build a gial toy outside, so it will be, like the inside outside and the outside inside.” ~Maya“I just noticed something. The flowers carry weight.” ~Oisin“The tree is balanced now, so it is not tipping over.” ~Malia
Have you noticed that there is a tree growing in Core 1? The students have created this structure from the ground up, using chicken wire and natural materials. The students have created an “art guard” list to protect the piece, but we have realized that we don’t really need those jobs. The students are treating the piece of art with respect and care. Who knows? It may become our Poet-tree for our last unit of study. Our poetry unit started today! The DVD’s of Foursome the Spider are in! If you have ordered a copy and have not yet received it, please be sure to see Chrysta sometime next week. Huge thanks to Chrysta’s younger brother, Ryan Powell of Eternite Media (www.eternitemedia.com), for duplicating our DVD’s.A school-wide SMASHING ARTS sharing will be on June 3rd, starting with a musical assembly by Cores 3 & 4. As you have been reading in our Friday letters, our visual arts teacher has inspired amazing art projects in Core 1. We will be presenting our visual arts experiences on June 3rd from 10:30-noon. Much of our artwork will be on display and some of the children will be demonstrating different artistic techniques. We hope you can stop by to appreciate our exhibit and ask us questions about what we’ve learned. Please look for amazing art work created by the Core 1 students for sale at SuperSMASH on Saturday! Thanks you to all of the parents who have helped make this possible, including Kathleen, Andrea, Nina & Ross.Tuesday is the last day library day. Please return all library books on Tuesday. Thank you! If you have lost a book, you can bring another gently used book from home to replace it.

CORE 3 NEWS
The final Arts Sharing is next week! It’s been another wonderful, full, enriching year for the SMASHing Arts Program—thanks to all the students’ creative enthusiasm, parent support, teachers helping the program run smoothly, artist inspiration, and Marni’s magical touch. Come check out what all the cores have been doing:

Core 3 will perform their California songs (including one they wrote themselves!) on Wednesday, June 3, in the Cafetorium at 8:45 at an All-School Assembly. Core 4 will also be performing their personal identity songs. A big shout-out to Dian for all her dedication to the SMASHing singers! FYI: We will also be performing at Ocean House on Wednesday, June 10, from 10:55-11:20.

But wait folks, that’s not all!!! Stick around because between 10:30 – 12:00 there’s a whole lotta Art Sharing going on:

Core 2 will be sharing the work they’ve been doing in Drama with Kristy--Break a leg, Kristy & company!

Core 1 will be sharing the work they’ve been doing in Visual Arts with Julianna--Thanks to Julianna for helping our imaginations run wild!

We know we have more than a few nervous and excited 5th graders (and parents) who are feeling anxious about moving up to Core 4. Well, come sneak a peek into your future:

Core 4 will be sharing a variety of things they’ve been doing this year as part of an integrated math/science/humanities unit between 10:30 – 12:00 and hosting a gallery show of the work they did for Visual Arts with Julianna between 1:00 – 2:00. FYI: Their comedy show from Drama with Kristy will be on Wed, June 10.

The year is winding down, but Core 3 students have been busy using reading, writing, and Science/Social Studies time to work on their Independent Research Projects. We’re using an inquiry-based approach to help the students practice different ways to discover topics, explore questions/theories about those topics, and investigate their ideas. This project does not involve homework, but a few students need some common household items for their experiments—ask your child if he/she needs anything for their experiment (they have a list!). We appreciate your support.

If you’d like to learn more about our Non-fiction Unit, come to Open House on Thursday, June 11. From 6:00 – 6:30, Core 3 will be open and the students will be sharing the process they went through as they learned how to do research during the Independent Research Project. At 6:30, the beginning musicians will be performing and at 7:30, the advanced and middle-school musicians will be performing.

***See you tomorrow at SuperSMASH!***
Come bid on the amazing art piece created by Core 3—Thanks, Marianne!

CORE 4 NEWS
FROM KURT:
Super Secret Lined Paper People: This week we practiced being peaceful and calm and directed our energies into productive thespian activities, and explored individual ways to calm ourselves when under pressure from outside forces. Unsurprisingly, this trustworthy team rose to the challenge and had another lovely week. This dream team disbands in just a few weeks; should we plan a celebration that includes parents?

Outdoor Environmental Education Trips for Next Year: The following dates are confirmed. Please work with me to find a way for every child to have these educationally rewarding adventures. Parents who wish to join an overnight trip need to check in now as the district process of screening chaperones must before completed before our parents may share the very real joys of these trips.
Catalina for 6th grade adventurers is scheduled for Mon-Wed, Oct 12-14. The balance ($200-275) of the cost will be due by mid September. Please plan ahead to avoid stress! The exact amount will depend on the final number of students joining us for this trip.
Yosemite for 7th grade will take place starting very early on Sunday, January 17 and conclude Friday around 17:00 on Jan 22. Final monies will be due around Nov 1. Final balances will be related to our young friends fundraising prowess, but will not exceed $550.

The following two trips are proposed, but not confirmed, as the 8th graders have considerably more variables in their lives that require coordination. I have penciled in these dates so the community may comment, plan ahead, and provide me feedback.
Camp Hess Kramer for 8th grade leadership training: This SMASHing tradition is tentatively scheduled for Monday -Wed starting Oct 19-21. It is important that every SMASHING senior go on this trip! If you have reservations please talk to me before deciding. The balance of the trip cost will be around $250 and due in mid September.
UC Berkeley and San Francisco: I propose that we go the week of June 14, 2010 just before our students graduate. We need to form a working group of two or three parents and me to make this happen. Anyone up for this? Early investigations suggest a cost of $600 or so…

Ciencia: Our culminating event for this min-unit will be a vivid and exciting brain dissection or an alternative virtual dissection by computer if the real brain is too gross. Operations begin next week! Be sure to join us on June 3 as we celebrate the year of learning that will be concluding. The amazing collection of Independent Investigation boards will be shared alongside their more prosaic working portfolios, and the visually arresting timelines that will result from our last min-unit. If that time does not work for you please drop around after school or before and I’ll take you through your child’s achievements. Let me know when you are arriving so I may have their work ready for viewing.

Service Learning Presentations (8th Graders): Our hard working SMASHing seniors will be presenting their learning to the public via a verbal defense and celebration of service sometime between May 28 and June 3. Be sure to ask your 8th grader about their scheduled time so you may support them during this high stakes event. Email me if they are not forthcoming with the information.

FROM BAILEY:

Sorry I will miss SuperSmash. I have prior commitment of an all day camping event with 2 of my daughters' Brownies. My husband and Shira should be there. Say hello to them.
