FRIDAY LETTER 03-06-09

It’s Time Again to SPRING FORWARD!!
SET YOUR CLOCKS AHEAD ONE HOUR THIS SUNDAY!!

Dear SMASHIng Families,
For those who were unable to attend Wednesday night’s School Board Budget Workshop, I thought I’d include a few key points.

On June 4, 2009 the proposed 2009-10 District Budget will be presented to
the Board of Education. On June 22-25, 2009 the proposed District Budget will be placed on display for public review . June 25, 2009, the Board of Education will conduct a public hearing and approve the 2009-10 District Budget. Between now and June 4th, the Superintendent’s Cabinet will consider input from Principals and School Board members will consider public comments.

The State Budget, although a little better than anticipated, is still a dramatic reduction. The plan is for $4 million of reductions in the 2009- 10 budget. The Summary of Proposed Reductions includes:
$4.05 Million in Proposed Reductions:
Special Education ($0.7 million)
Categorical Flexibility ($0.6 million)
District Office Reductions ($0.3 million)
Samohi Reorganization ($0.55 million)
Reducing Contracts ($0.3 million)
Nurses, Elementary Music, Intervention Counselors ($0.4 million)
Class Size ($1.2 million)

What does this above list mean for possible K-8 reductions across the District?
Reduction in Nurse time
Reduction in District music teacher time
Adjustment to Principal’s duties to take over some Central Office responsibilities and/or reduce time at small sites
K-3 Class Sizes to 23:1

These are all just possibilities at this time. Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Dr. Mike Matthews will be joining us to speak about how these proposed cuts might affect SMASH. The time and date will be announced

Truly Yours,
Jessica

IMPORTANT NOTICE!
Students may only stay out in front of the school and wait to be picked up for 10 minutes after dismissal (3:00pm M-Th, 1:40pm F). After that time ALL STUDENTS are to be in a supervised after school program or completely OFF campus (this includes the parking lot and the entire school block). Students may not leave campus after school and then return. This is a safety issue—we appreciate your attention.

Thanks SMASH for a great Jog-a-thon!

PLEASE COLLECT ALL YOUR PLEDGES BY MARCH 13 !

Dear SMASH students, faculty, family and friends:

This year we asked students “why do you run?” The answers were as varied as the interests at SMASH but there can be no doubt that SMASH athletes do run (an astounding 5,398 laps). Those laps raised $12,673.74 in pledges! 100% of the money raised goes back into SMASH in the form of arts and language programs, supplies, alumni scholarships, teacher education, gardening, computers and more.

SMASH’s athletes were supported by an amazing group of sponsors and volunteers who coach, DJ, tally numbers, MC, pick up supplies, set up the course, design posters, hang banners, count laps, pour water, cut bagels, pick up trash, run alongside, cheer and make it possible to give every athlete a t-shirt to commemorate the day.

We want to thank all of you and hope that everyone had as much fun at this year’s Jog-a-thon as we did. Pledge packets (showing how many laps were run and any money owed) will come home with each student. Please collect all outstanding pledges and turn in the money to the office or your Core teacher by Friday, 3/13.
Thanks again,
Darlene Flanders and Lillie Schlessinger
Jog-a-thon 2009 Co-chairs

Core 1 Updates
On Friday, March 13 9:00 – 12:30, Core 1 will be going to UCLA to see singer Dan Zanes. We will be taking the Big Blue Bus. Your child should bring a snack in a paper bag. We will eat lunch at school. Chaperones may sign up at the Home/School table. Please send in your pink permission slip as soon as possible.

The Skirball Museum gave us a great opportunity to look at animals and art in new, inspiring ways. The children explored the exhibit by climbing, pulling, cranking, sniffing, listening, and building.
Alie: “I thought what was interesting was the snake with the bottle caps.”
Lilly: “I liked the climbing thing and the wind thing.”
Abigail: “In the climbing place, when you pulled the rope, the trunk would go up and make an elephant noise.”
Morgan: “We took the eggs and put them in the tube. Then they would go into a basket.”
Maya: “I’m inspired to make the porcupine with noodles as the spines.”

“I don’t know how you do it,” said Darlynn (Anthony’s mom) to Chrysta after our Skirball trip. Well, we definitely couldn’t have field trips without your help! Thank you to all of the chaperones who helped us with our field trips this week.

Full Day Kindergarten will begin on Tuesdays and Thursdays after Spring Break. The Partners will still be dismissed at 1:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. While the rest of the district continues with part-time kindergarten throughout the school year, we like to gradually introduce longer school days to the children. While many of the Partners will benefit from this longer day, there may be a few families or children who find it too difficult. It is not required that Partners stay past 1:30, so if there are any concerns, please let us know. This is just an extra benefit we try to provide. Please take this into consideration as you make after school plans after Spring Break. Please feel free to share any questions or concerns.

Mark your calendar! Important March Dates:
Friday, March 13 – Field Trip to UCLA to see Dan Zanes (permission slip in next week’s letter)
Wednesday, March 18 – Core 1 Movie Premier 8:30 – 9:15 am at SMASH

Have an AMAZING weekend!
Candis, Chrysta and Jackie

Aloha Core 2 Community,
Information on Field Trips to Santa Monica City Hall: We will be leaving SMASH around 8:45 and walking to City Hall, we will eat our snack, take a tour, and return to SMASH for lunch at 12:20. Jayme’s Advisory is going on Thursday March 12 and Laura’s Advisory is going on Thursday March 19. Parent volunteers are needed for both trips. Permission slips are not needed as this is a walking field trip.

Our Reader’s Workshop focus has been increasing fluency and “prosody” (a fancy word for changing our voice). The goal is to have a natural reading voice that sounds like we are telling a story instead of just reading a story. One of the strategies that we have been working on is reading a passage once to decode all the challenging words, thinking about the clues that tell how the character(s) are feeling, then add the emotion into their voice on the second read. Our “Clues+What you Know=Inference” was the beginning of figuring out what the characters must be feeling. Readers make connections to their characters’ experience and apply that knowledge to their voices. Our voice is a great tool to add excitement, sadness, anxiety, etc. to our stories. The way we change our voice is also a way of showing how we relate to and understand the tone of the story and the characters’ feelings. Please practice this at home during Reading Homework. Reading aloud to each other is very important and also very FUN! Enjoy!

The internet can be a valuable tool for research, communication, and entertainment. With everything that is available on the internet, it is important to monitor what your child is doing. During school hours, when students have access to our computers, there are many filters and “blocked” websites that keep our students protected from seeing inappropriate websites. At home, we recommend that your family have a discussion about appropriate guidelines for computer use at home and the use of internet access on play dates.

A Special Note From Jayme:
Thank you to all the families and students that participated in folding the beautiful paper cranes and other origami pieces. Your hard work and creativity is much appreciated! I can’t wait to display them at the wedding!
Upcoming dates and events:
Wednesday, March 11 – Arts sharing Assembly with Dian 8:45am
Thursday, March 12 – Jayme’s Advisory, the Oompa Loompas, to City Hall

CORE 3 NEWS
Check out the website (click on Genie’s link—thanks for taking/posting the pics, Genie!) to see some of what’s been happening in and, especially, around Core 3!

Core 3 is wrapping up their 2nd trimester of arts! We were fortunate to find Juliana mid-year as our resident visual artist to share her expertise with us. A big shout out to Julianna and her friend Holly for inspiring so much creativity this session! You have probably heard and read (in a previous Friday Letter) that we are studying functional art (clay vessels, weaving, crocheting, and making baskets using newspaper “reeds”) that have been used since ancient times. We are planning for our arts sharing next week--please remind your child to bring in all finished art projects (even the “gifts”), unfinished projects, unused materials, and tools (got crochet hooks?!).

Our SMASHing Arts sharing is planned for Wednesday, March 11. The students will conducting a demonstration/workshop--small groups of Core 3 students will present to different cores. Spidermen students will be holding workshops between 10:30 –11:15 and Cookie Monsters will share between 11:30 – 12:15. Parents are welcome to come and join your child while they’re presenting and demonstrating their art crafts in the different cores.

Another upcoming family sharing event is the Literary/Book Club Night, Tuesday, March 31 at 5:30. We are planning a fun literary night engaging in rich talks around the book, Twenty and Ten, and a Poetry Slam where Core 3 poets will be sharing their poetry in an open-mic format. We hope you can join us! If you would like to borrow a copy of the book club book, please come see Tamara or Genie. And if you don’t get a chance to read it, you can still come and listen in on a book club talk/poetry readings.

Reminders:
***Ed Foundation Golden Tickets—sell them and turn in the stubs for the raffle drawing next week! The SMASH staff has been awarded with recorders, technology equipment like document cameras we use with the SMARTboards and digital cameras, scanners, etc. Great learning tools are purchased with this money—and we all know schools need $$$ more than ever right now!***

***Parent Education Morning—Tuesday March 17, 8:30-9:15. This month’s topic is Math at SMASH. If you are curious about how your child is learning math, this is the gathering for you!***

CORE 4 NEWS
FROM KURT:
Super Secret Lined Paper Advisory:
Conferences are over now and we are moving into the critical contract phase next week. Our students will be considering everything they have heard about what is most important and what action steps are required to bring about their goal to form a “critical contract.” Thanks again parents for the thoughtful conversations and effective support of these young marvels. Please, drop around for advisory meetings sometime. It is a brief commitment of time with enormous positive consequences for your child and our community.
Ciencia: Eighty two percent of our student scientists are poised to begin the messy process of building, performing their experiments, and erring greatly! The next two weeks for these young scientists are entirely devoted to collecting data, revising procedures on the fly, making constructive errors, starting to perform analysis, and having serious fun. Our remaining learners (those who have not finished background reports, procedures, testable questions, or gathered materials) will continue to work on these critical foundation items before moving into the experimenting portion of the project.
Organizing for Achievement (OfA): Parents, our SMASHing seniors are entering a busy and demanding period of the school year just as they wish it would end. Much has been accomplished and you have a great deal to be proud of. A significant majority are blossoming as effective high school ready students before my eyes; by contrast, a few other students are crashing into socializing challenges, 8th grade ennui and senior burn out.
Every possible support is in place to help them achieve at high levels relative to their potential, but a minority are not taking advantage of the opportunities offered them. To check in please ask the following questions:
1. Are you visiting with each of your teacher’s weekly?
2. Are you calling your support group twice weekly to support people who are absent, who need help, or going to high school in the afternoons?
3. Have you taken advantage of the tutoring or teacher help that is offered?
4. Several top performing students have independent studies that are meant to combine math processes, science concepts, and student interests into one fun bit of work. Ask your child how they are doing on the projects we arranged together or call me to aeeange one for your young scientist.
Ask about their interviews as these are supposed to be done and we are now moving into the final public speaking phase of the class. Remind them that all hours should be done by the 1st of April.
If the answer to any of questions one through three is “no,” you may assume your child is “coasting” and exhibiting a “senior slump.” Now is the time to stay in close touch. Visit often! Ask many questions! Help our young friends finish agreat year on a high note.
FROM KELLY:
Math: Collecting and Growing

Over the past week, the mathematicians have continued to ground their geometry study in its origins. They have continued to build on their many ways of collecting information. This week they focused specifically on acting as collectors of information through observation. Not only did we discuss how we gather information in our everyday lives through observation, but we also applied this collecting skill when looking at portraits from the times of Greek mathematicians. Students used the strategy of naming what they noticed to gather information, and then they grew their ideas through the use of role-play. The mathematicians chose a portrait and applied all their knowledge to act out the situation. They used their knowledge of the time (transferring their ideas from Humanities) and their observations to guide them in this act, a enriching and challenging task. As we continue to study geometry, we will continue to reference these historical moments to remind and ground our students mathematical understanding. Next week parallel lines and the various properties of triangles will be discussed.
Algebra
Over the past few weeks, we have been delving into functions. Writing, graphing, and evaluating functions held as the key concepts covered. Because these skills build on a multitude of previously learned concepts, we have taken time to review past skills as we explored these new ones. Two sections remain in Chapter 4 before our test. Chapter four test will be in two weeks. PLEASE encourage students to ask clarifying questions on their homework to ensure understanding. Because Algebra continues to build on previously learned skills at a RAPID pace, it is essential that the mathematicians consistently monitor their learning and understanding. I look forward to seeing them deepen this habit of mind.
Los Compadres Take on Conferences
A powerful and insightful process, our “what matters most” focus has guided many students into positive and meaningful action steps for the remaining school year’s time . It has been truly remarkable to see the maturity, honesty, and gusto the students bring to this process as well as what they walk away with. Thank you to those who have engaged in a conference or have one on the horizon. I truly look forward to spending time with each of you as we pave the way for your child’s success. If you have not scheduled a conference, PLEASE contact me to set up a time.
FROM BAILEY:
We have started a research project on a famous Ancient Greek Individual. They must take notes by March 11.
They will present the information in the form of an interview as if they are the individual teaching a lesson and speaking in the first person. The presentations are March 16 and 17. We are taking a field trip as an entire Core 4 to the Getty Villa on Wednesday March 18. If you can accompany us we would be grateful for additional adults. Mark you calendar for March 31 for a Core 4 Greek Panathenea festival and olympics. More information to come!
