PLAY-TINKER-MAKE
Thank you to
Rachel (of Sadie) and Alejandra (of Carla) for helping Chrysta apply for, and
RECEIVE a $500 grant from the Cotsen Family Foundation. Our goals of the grant
include providing our Core 1 parents with a solid understanding of our
Play-Tinker-Make curriculum and to provide YOU with tools to support our
children’s explorations at home. It is
our hope that a strong school-home connection will also encourage parents to
volunteer time during classroom hours. Curious? Find out more about the
Play-Tinker-Maker movement at playtinkermake.wordpress.com
SCRIBBLING
MACHINES (or SCRIBBLEBOTS)
We have many
upcoming opportunities for parents to get involved with making and tinkering.
One way is to work
directly with small groups, or individual children, in the classroom during
Projects time. It is our dream for all children to create a Scribbling Machine,
or “ScribbleBot.” A ScribbleBot is a motorized contraption that moves in unusual ways and leaves a mark to trace
its path. It’s made from simple materials and is based on the idea of motion
created by an offset motor. With our grant money, we will be purchasing Motors
(1.5v-3v), batteries (AA or AAA), electrical wire, glue sticks, markers and
wire strippers. We are collecting: masking tape and clean used
containers
(strawberry baskets, seaweed containers, cottage cheese containers). Please
leave them on the Art Studio table.
If you are
interested in participating in making ScribbleBots with students, or are
interested in other ways you can support our tinkering & making work in
Core 1, please email Chrysta at cpowell@smmusd.org. We will have an
upcoming parent meeting to collect ideas, explore our human resources and to
plan out our future work together. Information to follow!
DECEMBER BIRTHDAY
BASH - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 6
If your child was
born in DECEMBER, we’d love for you to join us! Your child is invited to bring
a fresh fruit or vegetable to share
with the Core 1 community. The birthday children will prepare the fruit
or vegetable by washing it, cutting it, and presenting it during Projects from
9:00-9:45. Families are invited to help at that time. We will ask you to set-up
the buffet tables on the small yard. At 9:45 we will all gather in Graciela’s
room for a story, a poem, and a song. At about 10:00 the children will snack on
the fruits and vegetables that were prepared by the birthday children. We will
ask you to serve the food and to help clean up. The festivities will end at
10:30. Our reusable dishes will need to be taken home by a birthday family to
be washed in a dishwasher.
Questions? Please
email Graciela at gbarba-castro@ smmusd.org
CORE 1 WISH LIST: Strawberry baskets, empty seaweed containers, cottage cheese containers,
tape of any and all kinds, air dry Model Magic clay, paper tubes, shoe boxes,
embroidery needles, embroidery thread, Method brand or Seventh Generation spray
cleaner.
Have a great weekend!

Our 4 field trips need chaperones! Please let us know asap!
The off-campus learning continues! Last Friday your child should have brought home 4 new permission slips,
Gene Autry Museum Tuesday, November 26,
Nutcracker@ Broad, Wednesday ,November 27,
Huntington Gardens Monday, December
2,
The Broad Theater National Geographic filmmaker talk Friday, December
6.
Please fill out the slips and we
appreciate the trip donations so we don't have to eat into our PTSA funds. We of course need chaperones! Please
email Genie (ghwang@smmusd.org) if you are able to chaperone one or all of the
trips!
~Astrocamp is February 19-21,
2014 for 5th graders. If you have a balance on your payment it will
be due in January. If you are unsure about what is left on your balance, please
email Genie (ghwang@smmusd.org).
Upper School Dance is December 6. The students have met and begun to plan and organize the
dance this week and will let you know of their responsibility to make sure the
dance is a fun experience for all!
6th gr Math with Erin: This week students continued to work on fractions and fraction
relationships. Students worked in groups to make large, wall size fraction
number lines. These 0 to 1 number lines showing halves through twelfths will be
displayed on the wall so students can refer to them often to look at what
fractions are equivalent to each other.
5th gr Math with Genie: We wrapped up our Large Numbers Addition and Subtraction unit sharing
strategies, trying different strategies and focused on our final assessment to
see what we understand and what is still confusing. Copies of that assessment will come home
soon. Please continue asking your child to read large numbers, estimate
addition and subtraction with large numbers as well as finding exact
answers. We are moving onto fractions!
Social Studies/Science with Erin: This week students spent quality time working on the country research
projects. Students are busy putting their informational books together and
planning their presentation table. We spent time this week on mini-lessons
thinking about how to best share the information on each page. Students thought
about what makes a good informational page: title, intro sentence, small
blurbs, organized info, photos, etc. Over the next two weeks we will miss a lot
of social studies class due to Thanksgiving and four field trips. We are
excited about all we will learn through these wonderful field trips and know
that students will buckle down to get their books down before the December 17
presentation.
Reading and Writing Workshop with
Genie: Thank you for coming to our Final
Debates! The students learned that there
are two sides to every opinion/idea.
Supporting an idea with reasons creates a clear argument. There is a
link between debates/speaking/writing essays.
Stage presence and overcoming fears of public speaking are
important. Teamwork can be challenging
but rewarding. Observing the successes
and failures of many debates helped to become better debaters. We hope to continue with debates in the
spring and that you will have lively family debates at home. Monday Personal
Essays are due! We will have a quick publishing celebration and then begin a
quick 2-week Literary Essay Unit to apply all that they learned to an essay
about a book, also known as a book review or a book report.
Visual Arts with Julianna: We added sound to
our short clips and talked about how as creators/directors of our short film we
want our audience to feel something—happy, sad, scared, humor, etc. How do sound effects and music affect
emotion? How can we help convey and
control that as we make our Claymation?
Homework:
5G math: packet #13. Due 12/6/13—Note the 2 weeks to complete this packet. Hope
it doesn't get lost!
RW: Is your child
reading at home? Is your child reading the same book until they finish it?
Nonfiction sheet but not due until Wednesday
DEC 4! Please help your child not
lose this sheet!
WW: collect 3 entries
(full pages) in writing notebook each week. Will be checked on Wednesdays. Entries can be writing about
anything—fiction, reflections, book reviews, memoirs, articles, debates,
essays.

Yosemite Reminders: Ways to prepare for the trip:
1. Get in shape for the trip - There is a lot of walking on this trip, so plan a few hikes with your
child before the trip, break-in those hiking shoes if they are new, and have
your child walk more each day.
2. Clothing - It is critical that children be provided with non-cotton winter-wear
made of synthetic or organic fibers that wick moisture away from their body.
This is a safety issue and non-negotiable. We have some clean jackets,
baselayers, fleece sweaters, and some ski pants to lend to people on a first
come-first served basis. You will wish to buy the long underwear, synthetic
socks, and hiking boots soon because prices begin to rise after the
Thanksgiving sales.
3. Information - Use the following link http://www.naturebridge.org/yosemite/parents to
find out all you could want to know about the trip, the location, or the people
we work with up in the park. Of course you may stop by to ask us questions or
email us.

Spring registration for Santa Monica Pony Baseball is now open.
Santa Monica Pony Baseball invites players ages 4-14 to sign up for its
spring season.
Santa Monica Pony Baseball is a community based
program for everyone in the family to enjoy and we are proud to continue the
tradition of baseball at Los Amigos Park that began in 1952.
The primary features that distinguish PONY Baseball
are the use of a two-year age bracket system and scaled diamonds. Players will
play on fields where the size of the diamonds are scaled to match the physical
capabilities of the players in each division.
The spring season starts in February and runs through early June. Register

SMASH/MUIR JUNIOR GREAT BOOKS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
We need volunteers to help run our Junior Great Books
program!
JGB is a
nationally-recognized program for student book clubs, drawing on a diverse set
of stories from all over the world to provoke student-led discussions of
literature and life. Last year we ran sessions for Kindergarten through 4th
grades. This year we are again partnering with Muir to share great books with
old friends and make some new friends too!
We will run 6 week sessions
from January to February, in parallel with the CREST Enrichment winter
schedule, starting the week of January 14. You can run your weekly one-hour
session on whatever days / times are convenient for you, we will work with your
schedule.
Leading a session is
immensely rewarding and fun -- the children will amaze you with their ideas!
Please contact peterjkovac@yahoo.com if you are interested in volunteering. No experience
necessary. Sign-ups for your kids will occur in late November or early
December.
