3 Tales of Learning and Celebrating Together while Influencing Others:

Many thanks to Emily, William, Micihyo, Joy, Iris, Kimia, Skye, Rise, Mai, Dean, and Kanoa for eloquently and proudly sharing SMASH with our 18 Japanese visitors last Friday! The group of graduate school of education professors, teachers from project-based learning schools, and government policy makers wanted to know all about our curriculum, partnerships with the city and other community organizations, governance structures, opportunities for student input into school goals, hiring procedures, and more. Our SMASHing parent and student tour guides wowed them with their deep knowledge of and love or our school while simultaneously learning about the nationalized Japanese school structures, beliefs about curriculum, and new Prime Minister's vision for the future.

More special thanks to Pocket Full of Tales Production Company's Artistic Director Kristy Pace (also highly renowned as our incredible Drama teacher) and her cast from "The Wizard's Crystal" for entertaining about 50 of our families Wednesday night. One cast member commented how great it was to see so many dads in the audience suspend their disbelief and laugh heartily during this children's musical. I marveled at the way 2 year-olds to teens to grownups enjoyed the event together and learned a little more about theatre productions. For those who missed it, go see the Wizard's Crystal in the theatre at: Pocket Full of Tales at Crown City Theatre; 11031 Camarillo St; N Hollywood Reservations: 310-746-2246 Tickets $6 kids/ $9 adults Saturdays: Oct 17 & 20 at 11:00am; Oct 31 at 11:00am &1:00pm

Finally, come interact with SMMUSD Superintendent Tim Cuneo on October 21 at 6:30pm in our library. It is vital to have a big turnout to show our Superintendent that we are active partners in our children' education, are committed to SMASH, and that we would like to be involved in any fiscal and programmatic considerations that are occurring at the District level.
Truly yours, Jessica

TREASURE BOXES: The secret is out! The Bigs presented "Treasure Boxes" to their Partners this week. This is a special box filled with meaningful treasures that the Bigs have been creating secretly in the afternoons. The Partners have been experiencing a story about this Treasure Box for weeks, and now they have a box to keep for their own. Each item has a special meaning: the heart stands for love, the pencil reminds us to write down the stories we love and the things we learn, and the "dirty rock" has a crystal inside - so we remember that there is beauty within everyone and everything. These treasures we keep in our box to remind us that they actually live inside of us. And these are the things that will bring happiness to every journey we have.
MAGIC CIRCLE: “You need to use your Magic Circle words. At SMASH, ‘I’m sorry,’ is not enough.” ~Lucca, Core 1 BIG. Magic Circle is a time of our day when the children get the opportunity to collect ideas around problem solving strategies, and then practice what they have learned with their circle group. “Magic Circle Words,” as we call them, give the children the opportunity to start with a positive statement, move to constructive feedback, and then state what they need. For example, “John, I like you as a friend, but I didn’t like it when you bumped into me. I need you to be more careful next time, please.” In this way, students are able to strengthen their problem solving skills.
PROJECTS: 3 new projects have begun this week: Movement with Alison (Erin’s mom), Pirates with Chrysta, The Super Fab Lab with Elizabeth (Ricky’s mom). We also had yoga as a choice during PE on Thursday, led by the wonderful C.J. Check out our BLOG this weekend for a look at what is going on.
HALLOWEEN: Details about our Halloween guidelines and Annual Halloween Walk on Main Street will be in next week's Friday Letter.
COMMUNITY WALK: To prepare for our Annual Halloween Walk on Main Street we will go on a Community Walk on Wednesday, October 14 at 10:00am to Jocelyn Park. Please dress your child in walking shoes and pack a snack. We need parents to join us! Sign up at the Home School Table.
PARTNERS EXTENDED DAYS: Beginning TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13 the Partners are invited to stay until 2:50 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is not mandatory, but something we would like to offer the Partners in order to deepen their workshop learning. If your child will NOT be staying until 2:50 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, please tell Candis or Chrysta. 1:30 pick-up will continue for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
CONFERENCES: October 21-23 we dismiss at 1:30pm so that we can meet with each family, including the children, for 20 minutes. Please sign up in the office next week. Your family will meet with your child’s Workshop teacher (Partners with Candis, Bigs with Chrysta). Look for more information about conferences in next week’s Friday Letter.
WISH LIST: Brown Clipboards, Child Friendly Rakes

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!

Dear Core 2 Community,
Our community building was focused around Empathy – how help and take care of each other and ourselves. We brainstormed how it would look in Core 2. One way to support Core 2 would be to discuss CARES at home to figure out what it looks like there. Next week our focus is on the “S” in CARES – self control. At the end of the week we will have official core guidelines.
In Reading Workshop, each child may check out one book from the Core 2 Library. We will let you know when we begin visiting the Media Center. After we receive a permission slip signed by the child and parent, they can check out a book with their advisor. If you have not returned this form another copy is attached.
In Writing Workshop, we launched a new unit – small moment personal narratives. This week’s focus was on gathering ideas and using a timeline as a tool for organizing thoughts.
Math: The 2nd graders are continuing to solve word problems that join two quantities. They worked in partnerships to explain their counting strategy. Next week’s math warm-ups will focus decomposing numbers e.g. pulling out one group of ten and two ones from twelve.
The 3rd graders continued working on Things That Come In Groups by finishing their skip counting charts and making them into an individual resource book.
Our next Stars of the Week are on Wed, October 14. They will be: Morgan and Abbie Grossman.
We used Magic Circle to act out problem solving scenarios. They are authentic examples of issues that come up during our day. The class suggests ways to solve these problems.
Thank you to all the families that have been supporting reading at home and helping your child filling out the homework sheet. We have attached this week’s worth of reading homework.
We continued our work on germ control. Ask your child all the precautions we take in core 2 so that we can be a healthy, flu free community.

Safety: To be sure that each child is able to run, jump, climb, etc. safely, Core 2 is following the district policy for all students to wear appropriate, sturdy shoes everyday. Please help your child to remember to wear wearing comfortable clothing and appropriate, sturdy shoes – no sandals or crocs. (Reprint from our opening letter.) Next week will be our 6th week of school. I know it is hard to believe. We will be making sure that your child is safe at school and wearing the appropriate shoes.

Core 2 Wish list: we need Q-tips and latex free Band-Aids, and the list from our Forum: 2 Parcheesi games, 2 Connect 4, 1 set Math Cubes (http://www.learningresources.com/ or Lakeshore), 1 Paper cutter (not heavy duty), 12 decks of cards, 4 dustpans, 1 set Kapla blocks or Kevaplanks (http://www.kevaplanks.com/), checkers and boards, and thank you to Morgan’s family for their pledge of 2 chessboards and pieces.

Dates to remember:
Wednesday, October 14 – Morgan and Abbie’s Star of the Week, 9:00
Wednesday, October 21 – 1:30 dismissal! Fall Family Conferences 20 minutes each, sign up in the main office.
Thursday, October 22-- 1:30 dismissal! Fall Family Conferences 20 minutes each, sign up in the main office.
Friday, October 23 -- 1:30 dismissal! Fall Family Conferences 20 minutes each, sign up in the main office.

CORE 3 NEWS
Are you starting to recognize a pattern to the Friday Letters yet? After we explained the importance of the Friday Letter as a handy-dandy SMASH/Core 3 reference tool and conversation starter, we followed with info Responsive Classroom and the first six weeks of school. Last week--an overview Reading Workshop. This week it’s all about Math. Can you guess the topic of next week’s letter? (Hint: the 3 R’s are alive and well here at SMASH!)

The major goals of our Math Workshop are for students to devlop personal problem-solving strategies, a deep understanding of numbers and operations (+, -, x, ¸), and an ability to organize and articulate their mathematical thinking. We use the TERC Investigations curriculum. SMASH chose it because it is developmentally appropriate and it meets the national math standards. TERC is used by many districts across the country and alligns with the kind of math teaching/thinking that is being used in other countries with high levels of math proficiency both in school and the global marketplace, like Japan and Singapore. They focus on teaching students to think like mathematicians, not following a procedure. According to the Singapore Math website (a curriculum very similar to TERC), in 1999 their Ministry of Education decided to reduce or remove any standards that focused on plain recalling or technical details to promote focusing on conceptual understanding--and to eliminate content too abstract or developmentally inappropriate from it entirely.

Likewise, our Math Workshop places the understanding on the numbers/operations, not the procedures used to get an answer. We want students to use strategies they can apply to a variety of problem-solving situations. This is why we do not encourage the use of traditional algorithms (stacking/lining up numbers and working with numbers as single digits to “borrow” and “carry” or using the “house” to do long division). This causes the problem-solver to look at 958 + 219 as solving 8+9 and 5+1 and 9+2 without seeing that they are actually working with hundreds and will get an answer in the thousands. In other words they are following steps for solving without doing any thinking! These procedures are important and efficient in many instances, and they are addressed in each core. They will not be “taught” until 5th grade, when most students can developmentally understand and remember not just how to do them, but why they work. This does not mean that all 5th graders will become proficient with them or that some 4th graders aren’t ready to understand and use them--as with all things developmentally appropriate, children go at their own pace. In Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) training, a brain-based research program the entire district is using to guide it’s math curriculum, shows that learning algorithms too soon actually shuts down a child’s problem solving abilities.

Genie and Tamara recently attended an SMMUSD Pictorial Math workshop designed to help teachers across the district do what we have already been doing with TERC. There is a nationwide movement toward a "depth over breadth, problem solving and math thinking first, hands-on" approach with a more limited focus: Place Value, Multiplication, Division, Fractions, and Decimals. We are so excited that SMASH has been “the wave of the future” in this area.

Regular practice is a key part of developing computational fluency with whole numbers, utilizing different strategies, and building understanding of increasingly complex mathematical concepts. This is one reason we give regular homework. This work allows you to see what your child is doing in math and get a glimpse into his/her mathematical thinking. By design, the work must meet a variety of criteria: to review and practice ideas presented in class, preview upcoming work, support struggling students, challenge more advanced mathematicians, and keep all students doing a little bit of math outside of school each day. We encourage kids to start with what you know, do what you can, bring it in to ask questions and get help, and try their own problem-solving strategies. Remember, it’s about the process, not the answer!

For more information, check out: http://investigations.terc.edu/library/developing/overview.cfm for an overview of our math curriculum, pictorialmath.com, and/or check out the SMASH website (Core 3/Genie) for a fantastic math article on the importance of teaching math like a mathematician.

CORE 4
Dear Parent Partners,

Our official conference days are fast approaching and we would like to provide some information that will help everyone gain value from this important communications opportunity. Our students have been working hard creating goals and evolving them into declarations of intent, complete with specific action plans. They will be well-prepared and ready to engage in conversation at the conference! We are also asking that you do some work too. And you thought your homework days over…ah the joys!
In one million words or less please tell us about “what matters most” to you for your child’s life right now. The question is consciously open so that your child’s whole life is in the conversation not just the person who appears at school, the soccer field, or at home.
Please review their school work weekly and ask deep questions about what is transpiring in class as a review opportunity for our learners

Our conferences this year will be 15 minutes long with 5 minute transitions between family groups. Your child is to be at this meeting, as they are central to the process here at SMASH. If you need for an adult’s only conversation please let us know and we will make arrangements to have tea or otherwise check in.

We will be scheduling in order of “most need” meaning that we shall generally be seeing 6th grade parents first, 7th grade parents next, and we are asking our most experienced parent partners to join us as a group on Nov 12 at 6:00pm. This meeting reflects our joint decision last year to work as an adult team to weave a fine meshed safety net under out SMASHing seniors. Naturally we are always available individually should you feel a pressing need. - Kelly and Kurt

Imagining a Life Beyond What is Immediate: Reading Workshop! (Green and Red Groups)

What an exciting time this is for our Core 4 students! By adding another area of focused instruction to the existing schedule, the Reading Workshop, Core 4 students are set up on one of the strongest and supportive academic paths. Over these past few weeks, we have jumped directly into our Reading curriculum! As I discussed in our Core 4 Forum, not only do we want to teach kids to read with strength and power, but we also want them to use reading as a way to imagine themselves as activists building the life of their characters and stories into their own lives. We’ll use this Reading Workshop to help the students make pictures of their own worlds and to imagine new possibilities for their own lives and the lives of those around them. By teaching strategies to read thoughtfully paying attention to the details of their books, it will allow them to explore the big issues and ideas in their lives.

Our first unit of study supports this idea by teaching students ways to grow empathy in their books. Through envisioning and determining connections to the characters and situations in the text, students will begin to develop this. Specific strategies include drawing on textual clues that inform meaning and drawing on all they’ve experienced themselves in order to add more to the text than what’s detailed. I encourage you to ask your child about these strategies that are being taught. Because the students have a reading notebook that supports this reading work, you can always ask to take a “notebook tour” to discover the reading work they have been doing. We have shared many successes thus far and have started to live the lives of many characters. Ask about Priscilla and Monk Klutter, to name a few! - Kelly
