Do you want to be more proactive about rather than reactive to unproductive behaviors by your child at home?
Do you want to think about ways to set up homework so it is successfully completed at night?
Do you want to practice using simple, direct, authentic language with family members?
Join our wonderful Responsive Classroom trainer Margaret Wilson

ptsa news

president’s message

Dear SMASHing Parents,

Many of you may have heard the SMASH PTSA presentations at the Core 1 and Core 2 forums. The SMASHing families’ enthusiasm and volunteer spirit were on display, as many volunteered, signed up for PTSA memberships and made contributions to the Annual Family Investment. It’s exciting to see both new and returning families jump right into our community.

There has been detailed discussion at both the Core forums this week and the PTSA meeting on Wednesday about the on-going fiscal crisis in the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District. Of course, most of us have learned about Propositions Y & YY and the need to get involved to help assure a permanent source of funding for our Santa Monica public schools. Between now and the November election, there will continue to be a need for volunteers at the Proposition Y & YY campaign headquarters.
Thanks,
Dan McGee
prop Y & YY phone bank
SMASH will have another opportunity to participate in the phone bank. The next date will probably be in October. Look for the date in upcoming Friday Letters. Campaign headquarters are located at 3000 Ocean Park Blvd., Suite 3005, 310-562-6003. To sign up to volunteer, email Helga Schier at helgaschier@verizon.net or Dan McGee at dmcgee@mcgeelerer.com.

ptsa annual family investment drive
The SMASH Annual Family Investment Drive is well underway, and family donations are coming in. The SMASH PSTA is suggesting an investment of $575 per student. We hope that every SMASH family makes a decision to make a donation. We are looking for 100% participation. The SMASH PTSA understands that some families are unable to donate as much as other families, but we hope that everyone contributes something. Donations can be made by check, Paypal or credit card. Annual Family Investment (AFI) envelopes are available in the office. Even if you cannot make an investment at this time, we request that everyone make a commitment and let us know when you can make a payment or if your Annual Family Investment needs to be paid in installments. Your investment helps pay for classroom teaching assistants, reading and math specialists, the SMASH fine arts program, science equipment, technology upgrades, professional development and so much more. Please make your tax deductible contribution or commitment by October 1, 2010. If you have any questions, contact Marni Ayers Brady (marniayers@gmail.com) or Helga Schier (helgaschier@verizon.net)
ptsa membership
So far, SMASH families have signed up for over 190 PTSA memberships. Great going guys! We hope that every family will purchase a PTSA membership for every member of their family ($8 per membership, payable to SMASH PTSA). Membership envelopes are available in the office.

SMASH business directory
There is still time to purchase a listing in the SMASH Business Directory by placing an ad for your business, your employer’s business, or soliciting an ad placement from a local business. Registration forms are available in the office. One is for businesses owned by SMASH parents or where SMASH parents work, the other is for businesses not connected to SMASH. Make sure you use the right one! Deadline to turn in registration form and check is October 1st.

SMASH Rummage Sale/Car Wash
Volunteers are needed for the SMASH Rummage Sale and Car Wash, which is scheduled for Saturday, October 23, 2010. On Friday, October 22, 2010, volunteers are needed to sort and display the sale items. Volunteers will be needed on Saturday during the sale and car wash. Please contact Jamee Tenzer (tenzer@lifeworks4coaching.com) or Kelly Lance (kebolance@yahoo.com) to volunteer for the Rummage Sale and John Zemke (zemkejohn@gmail.com) to help with the car wash.

SMASH bash
Sign-ups to attend a SMASH Bash event will be October 8, 2010, 8:45 a.m. -1:30 p.m. at SMASH. So far we have 14 SMASH families who have volunteered to host a SMASH Bash. This year we are looking for a total of 20 bashes. If you have an idea or want to host a SMASH Bash, please contact Marni Ayers (marni99@yahoo.com), PTSA V.P. of Fundraising, to discuss your idea. If you didn’t have a chance to experience a SMASH Bash last year, don’t miss out this year!

SMASHing meetings
Our next PTSA meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 6 at 6:00 p.m.. At this time, the next PTSA meeting is scheduled to be held at El Torito Restaurant on Ocean Park Blvd. in Santa Monica. It will be both a PTSA meeting and a SMASH restaurant night for the entire SMASH family. El Torito has agreed to donate a portion of the sales to the SMASH PTSA. Last year we held two events at local restaurants that were a SMASHing success and helped raise money for the PTSA. This year we hope to hold several restaurant events during the school year. We need your voice, your support, and your involvement. Please plan to attend with the whole family.

CORE 1 NEWS

THANK YOU to EVERYONE who made Tuesday’s Core 1 Forum a HUGE success. We hope it was informative and fun. Your generosity with your time/resources will make this school year a HUGE success.

Next to look forward to… October Family Conferences will be October 6-8. There will be sign-ups in the main office next week. School will end at 1:30 on those days.

To prepare for your conference, look for your Fall Conference Questionnaire next week in your child’s Friday Folder.

Reminders: All kindergarteners should be picked up in the Magic Garden Room at 1:30. This helps keep everyone safe and organized. This is also where they get picked up for aftercare and classes, which start next week. We try not to disturb the Bigs and Mentors, who are staying for the afternoon.

If you’ve made arrangements for your child to go home with someone else, please make sure you send us a note. Or you can post your note on the bulletin board in the Magic Garden Room.

All students need a change of clothes (in a bag with his/her name) in case of spills, slips, or occasional accidents. Please continue to check your child’s bag, for these bags will need to be replenished when they are used.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!

CORE 2 NEWS
Thank you to all the families who were able to attend our Core 2 Forum last night—we value your input, questions, concerns, and contributions to the Core 2 community. Core 2 Rocks! If you were unable to attend, please see the attached handouts about our Daily Reading and Weekly Math Homework. Writing Homework will be embedded in the Friday Letter (look for it next week), so keep reading the Friday Packets!!!

Advisory News: This week our Leadership focus was on the “A” in CARES, Assertion. The students practiced standing up for their ideas, their needs, and their classmates. They also used assertion to share about themselves, vote for Room names, and campaign/elect Student Council Representatives. We have been reading about, discussing, and practicing assertion as individuals, partners, table teams, and a whole group. Ask your child how and when they use their Assertion in Core 2. Discuss ways your child could use assertion outside of school.

Literacy:Our academic focus this week was on Writing Workshop. We started to live our writerly lives by personalizing our Writing Notebooks, making lists, writing letters, retelling favorite stories, and practicing spelling and penmanship. We are learning how to write a complete thought using a capital letter at the beginning and an ending mark when our thought is done. Reading Homework: All Core 2 students should be reading for at least 25 minutes at home each day (independent reading, reading aloud to a family member, and listening to a read aloud all count for reading homework). Remember to talk with your child about the books you/they read--great readers talk about what they are reading!

Math:We started our first math units from our brand new TERC Investigations curriculum. We’re already noticing how much more vocabulary, skill-building, and practice there is in the new curriculum. Part of that additional skill-building will be the daily practice students do at home in their math packets. The math packets will come home each Friday, starting today, and be due the following Friday. Laura’s 3rd graders began Trading Stickers, Combining Coins unit. Tamara’s 4th graders started Factors, Multiples, and Arrays unit. Please read the attached letter about this unit and how you can support your child at home. Ask your child to tell you about one thing they already knew from this unit and one thing they just learned (or finally understand!) this week.

Media Center: The Crazy SMASHers visited the Media Center last week. The Ham and Cheese Sandwiches went this week. Children will be allowed to check out 2 books and bring them home. Ask your child to show you their Media Center books, so you can help your child be responsible for caring for them at home and returning them when they are due.

District Music: Students have started getting their instruments—how exciting! Students will store their instruments in the Surf Shack during the school day. Please make sure your child’s instrument has a nametag with their name, school, and a phone number on it and help them be responsible for bringing their instrument and music folder to and from school each day and practicing their instrument each night.

Dates to Remember:
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, October 6, 7, 8 – 1:30 dismissal, Fall Conferences, sign up in the main office
Friday, October 15 – Crazy Hair Day sponsored by Student Council
Tuesday, October 19 – Picture Day, more info to come

Have a great weekend!
Tamara, Laura, Jayme, Nadja, and Karin
Laura: lsherman@smmusd.org
Tamara: tmugalian@smmusd.org

CORE 3
We look forward to meeting you at our Forum, Wednesday, September 29, 6:00-8:00pm !

6th Grade Math with Carrie: We continued our journey into multiplication this week by taking a closer look at the relationship between factors and products. We looked at the strategies behind the Factor Game and learned a new game, The Product Game.Ask your child about them. We also continued to develop our problem solving skills by working on two different word problems, Sack Full of Nuts and Raking the Yard.We are building up our repertoire of strategies to help us solve problems, which will help us as we encounter more and more difficult problems. The students have a page of homework due next Monday.
6th Grade Math with Erin: This week in Data About Us students created graphs to chart the data they discovered. On Thursday we furthered our understanding by learning about mode, median, and range.

5th grade Math Workshop with Genie: There will be some handy parent letters given out at the Forum on Wed., which will give you ideas on ways to help your child in math at home. This week, we have continued with number puzzles which have 4 clues like this: This number is a square number. This number is a multiple of 9. This number has 2 digits. This number is even. Ask your child if they remember the answer to this puzzle. We also worked with array cards to help us see the small arrays in the larger ones which helps us with memorizing facts (6x6=6x5 + 6x1).
Science with Carrie: Science began with a bang this week (well, more like a fizz than a bang). In keeping with our fall theme of "Building", we are looking at the building blocks of matter and learning about elements, the Periodic Table of the Elements, atoms, molecules, compounds, mixtures, and solutions. This week we conducted our first experiment, "Vinegar and _____". We tested what happens when you combine vinegar and four different household items: salt, cornstarch, baking soda, and baking powder.Students are responsible for completing their lab write-up by Monday. Now that we have conducted the experiment, we will be looking at WHY we got the reactions that we observed. We also had a big discussion about "Quality Work" and how there is an expectation to turn in work that is of high quality for each individual. For us this means: we are proud of the work we have completed; the work demonstrates thought and effort; and we are willing to share our work with family members and others in the community.

Social Studies and Geography with Erin: This week in Social Studies we continued our study of identity and communities. On Wednesday the students shared their identity charts with each other, looking for similarities and differences. Among the many things that your children feel contribute to their identities are: age, gender, race, family background, hobbies, friends, and siblings. We furthered the discussion by thinking about how personal experiences shape our identities as well. On Thursday students worked to create biopoems based on personal experiences. Please ask you child to share theirs with you. In Geography this week students had to use their prior knowledge to create maps of the world. Working in pairs or groups of three, students used construction paper and glue sticks- and no maps or atlases - to demonstrate their understanding of our world map. Come and see the results in the classroom!
Reading and Writing Workshop with Genie: We have been pushing the idea of reading a lot and increasing the volume of our reading. Your child should be reading about 10-20 pages a day at home and 10-20 pages the 3 times a week they have Reading Workshop in school which is at least 100 pages a week. Depending on the length of the book, your child should be reading a new book every few weeks! Your child should be engaged with their book and find it riveting and fascinating. We have been pushing ourselves as writers in Writing Workshop to choose an idea, nurture, and plan our idea using a story mountain map and paying attention to the heart of our story. We have drafted our stories and even started revising using what we remembered about revising. If you are interested in writing your own story about one moment in your child's life, please share your process with your child and be ready to share at our celebration on 10/4.

Mon, 10/4: Personal Narrative Writing Celebration—Parents welcome! Orange 1:05-2:00; Blue 2:00-2:50-rm 490.
Tues, 10/5: Trip to the Getty Center for an Architecture Tour—if you are interested in chaperoning, please email us. (Field trip slips will go out on Oct 1 and we are asking for $7.00 donation to pay for the bus.)
Wed. 10/6, Thurs. 10/7, Fri. 10/8: Fall Family Conferences. Sign-ups will be in the office.

Art supplies REALLY needed (nothing came in this past week):
~card board (at least 2'x2') any square or rectangle shape to be used for the base for our stage diagrams
~magazines and furniture catalogs to be cut up

Friends,
I'm writing today to check in about the payment for this years Yo(semite)/Cat(atalina)/Hess Kramer trips. You will recall that we began collecting payments in April/May and I know that Nadja has contacted many of you recently, as well. We began this process five months ago to insure that every family had the option of budgeting for the trips if they wished to do so.I have both good news and some tough news. The good news is that we still have a full schedule of exciting educational trips, despite the challenging economy. They have become SMASH traditions and have always been paid for by the parents of Core 4 and a few small grants. The harder news is that our contractual payment obligations are upon us; these commitments must be met if SMASH is to retain its sterling reputation with our business partners and offer these learning adventures. If your student is going to join us on a Yo/Cat/Hess Kramer trip we must have your full payment by October 1. We are aware that this firm and non-negotiable deadline means that some families may not be able to take advantage of these tremendous learning opportunities this year; however, we encourage people to begin budgeting and planning for next year as we are already doing. If a child misses a grade level trip, they will have the option of joining the trip the following year. The trips for sixth graders, Catalina, cost $320.00. The week long Yosemite trip costs $600.00 payment may be made by check made out to SMASH PTSA or by credit card at core four forums and mixers. Hess Kramer is also $320.00 per student. Several motivated parents and I are working to develop funds for partial scholarships (50%). Let me know if you wish to help.If you have any questions, please email, drop by, or call Kurt before the deadline of October 1.

WHY JOIN SMASH PTSA?
[Parent Teacher Student Association]

The number-one reason to join the SMASH PTSA is to benefit your child. In doing so, you also help SMASH. But there are many more advantages. Here are just a few:

Get Connected. There’s no better way to know what’s happening at SMASH.

Tap into a Network. SMASH PTSA functions provide opportunities to meet other parents and teachers, build rapport and discuss parenting issues that are on your mind.

Watch yourself Grow. By volunteering with our PTSA, you gain valuable experiences and personal confidence. It’s an opportunity to put your skills and hobbies to good use for a good cause.

Speak Up. Because PTSA is a forum for exchanging ideas, you are encouraged to make suggestions and more effectively suggest change at our school.

Help Your Child Succeed. PTSA fosters parent involvement. Parent involvement has been proven by three decades of research to be the greatest predictor of student success.

Witness Improvement. By getting involved at SMASH, you’ll be part of the solution, helping to make positive changes. Our PTSA plays an important role in fundraising to provide building improvements, curriculum-based programs, social events, teachers’ aides, classroom supplies – all vital to the success of SMASH and our children.

Be a Role Model. By becoming a PTSA member, you’ll be demonstrating to your child the importance you place on education.

To join, fill out the white PTSA envelope that came in your child’s first day packet, or pick up an envelope at the office. Insert a check for $8 per member, payable to SMASH PTSA. Drop the envelope off at the office. Any questions, email Catherine Lerer (mother of Molly McGee/Core 2 and Sadie McGee/Core 1) at clerer@mcgeelerer.com.

Sincerely,
Catherine Lerer Daniel McGee Jessica Rishe

♦ SUPPORT THE SMASH COMMUNITY & LET IT SUPPORT YOU ♦

Dear Santa Monica Business Community Member,

For the 2010 - 2011 school year, SMASH (Santa Monica Alternative School House) a public, kindergarten to 8th grade school, is inviting local businesses to place a full page ad in our SMASH Phone Book and Business Directory.

What is the directory? The SMASH Phone Book and Business Directory contains students’ contact information and ads from selected local businesses. The directory is distributed to every SMASH family. Most families have multiple copies (home, work, car).

Why should you place an ad?

First - This is a rare opportunity to target a unique group of local, community-minded consumers. Hundreds of local families will see your ad, repeatedly, all school-year long. Your ad will generate tremendous goodwill amongst families who will be eager to support your business in appreciation of your support for their children’s school.

Second - You will be helping a Santa Monica public school at a time when your help is desperately needed. $7.1 million has been cut from the school district budget. Your donation will provide financial support for SMASH classroom supplies, teacher aides, music and art programs, and more.

Cost for an ad? $300 for a full page black & white ad. Because SMASH is a nonprofit, donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law.

How to submit listing? Send completed registration form and check (or pay online) to SMASH by 10/1/10.

Questions? Contact Catherine Lerer at 310-717-8057 or clerer@mcgeelerer.com

♦ SUPPORT THE SMASH COMMUNITY & LET IT SUPPORT YOU ♦

What is it? The SMASH Business Directory is a listing of SMASH family businesses, services, talents, and parents’ employers’ businesses. This year, we’re inviting ad placements from local businesses, and we’re combining the directory with the SMASH Phone Book. The Phone Book/Business Directory will only be distributed to SMASH families.

What’s the purpose? Encourage and enable networking among SMASH families by providing an easy way to learn of and patronize our community’s resources. A great way to advertise what you do. All SMASH PTSA members will receive a copy of the Directory. Most importantly, it’s a school fundraiser.

Who can submit listing? SMASH family members and local businesses.

What type of businesses can be listed? Businesses, services, or talents. Established enterprises, new businesses and home-based services are welcome.

Cost to list? Suggested donation for each basic listing: $25.
In addition to basic listing: to place a full page ad, add $100
to place a half page ad, add $75
to place a business card ad, add $50
Donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. SMASH is a 501 c (3) nonprofit organization (Tax ID#:95-4439445)

Where does my money go? Funds raised support the SMASH PTSA, which provides financial support for SMASH teachers’ aides, classroom supplies, field trips, music, art, and more.

How submit listing? Return completed registration form and check, payable to SMASH PTSA, to SMASH office by 10/1/10. Or use Paypal. If placing additional full page, half page or business card ad, email it to Nikki von Riesen at nikki@peprinting.com by 10/1/10. Or email the copy and logo to Nikki, and SMASH dad Ross Furukawa has graciously offered to build the ad for you.
