MARCH 12, 2010

SET YOUR CLOCKS AHEAD—ONE HOUR!!
DAYLIGHT SAVINGS BEGINS SUNDAY, MARCH 14!

**************************************************************
Dear SMASHing Families,
At the recent SMMUSD Board of Education meeting, several items were approved by the Board to create a balanced budget caused by the State’s fiscal crisis. Drastic measures had to be taken in order to decrease our deficit of $12,000,000. There are five most salient issues you should be aware of:
1. 61 elementary and secondary teachers were given pink slips including SMASH teachers.
2. District-wide Nursing staff was reduced
3. District-wide Librarian staff was reduced
4. All Elementary Music instructors received pink slips
Please stay informed via the SMASHing Friday Letter and parent emails, attend meetings, and get involved to ensure that the community works together to minimize lay offs, keep class sizes as small as possible, help protect music programs, and work together to create solutions to support our outstanding staff and our spectacular students and their learning. The other salient issue is that ten furlough days were approved, five for this year and five for next school year. What this means for your child is that they will have 5 less school days this year (school will end Friday, June 18 instead of Friday, June 25) and 5 less school days next year. This means that every employee in our school district will not be paid for 10 work days because there will be a total shut down of all services during furlough days.

Next year’s 2010-2011 newly approved calendar is available at www.smmusd.org. - go to calendars, yearly. Included below the new June dates to help you plan for the loss in school days.
Monday, June 14 – 1:30 Dismissal for all grades
Tuesday, June 15 -- 1:30 Dismissal for all grades
Wednesday, June 16 – 1:30 Dismissal for all grades
Thursday, June 17 – 8th Grade Graduation and 1:30 Dismissal for all grades
Friday, June 18 – All School Beach Day, Last Day of School, 1:30 Dismissal for all grades

We will discuss the most recent budget and staffing information in terms of possibilities for SMASH at Site Council this Wednesday, March17, 5:00-6:00pm in Core 2. Minutes from the meeting will be published in the March 19 Friday Letter for those who are unable to attend.

With critical elections coming up, I wanted to remind you that voter registration deadlines are coming up. For your convenience, I have included the link to the Secretary of State and California Voter Registration website so that you can be an active participant in the legislative process. The deadline to register is May 10 (at least 15 days before that election) in order to be eligible to vote. Voter registration forms are available at the City Clerk's Office, U.S. Post
Offices, Public Libraries, Department of Motor Vehicles offices, and other public buildings. Members of the public may download the registration form from the Secretary of State's website at www.ss.ca.gov , or the Federal Election Commission's website at www.fed.gov.

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to educate your child on your active citizenship. Thank you for being a great role model.
Truly Yours,
Jessica

Thanks SMASH for a great Jog-a-thon!
PLEASE COLLECT ALL YOUR PLEDGES BY MARCH 19!

Dear SMASH students, faculty, family and friends:
Thanks to you we broke a SMASH record this year and received $16,277 in pledges!
100% of the money raised goes back into SMASH in the form of arts programs, supplies,
alumni scholarships, teacher education, gardening, computers and more.
SMASH’s athletes were supported by an amazing group of sponsors and volunteers who
coached, DJ’d, tallied numbers, MC’d, picked up supplies, set up the course, designed posters, hung banners, counted laps, poured water, cut bagels, picked up trash, ran alongside, cheered and made it possible to give every athlete a t-shirt to commemorate the day.
We want to thank all of you and hope that everyone had as much fun at this year’s Jog-a-thon
as we did. Pledge packets (showing how many laps were run and any money owed) will come home with each student. Please collect all outstanding pledges and turn in the money to the office or your Core teacher by Friday, 3/19.
Thanks again,
Darlene Flanders and Lillie Schlessinger

ptsa news
Dear SMASH community,
The budget crisis has hit home, and it has hit hard. Three of our fantastic teachers may fall victim to the budget cuts.
This is devastating news.
And this is only the sharpest tip of the iceberg. There will be furlough days for sure and class sizes will increase, the question is only by how much. Our elementary music program is at risk and our librarians and nurse may lose their jobs. And there’s more: LAUSD plans not to release students to neighboring districts any more, which directly affects many students at SMASH. All this will have a profound impact on the SMASH community as a whole.
Devastating news, indeed.
But the SMASH community has always come together in times of crisis. I have no doubt that our community will rise to the occasion and mobilize to find ways to support Santa Monica schools in general and SMASH in particular. Whether you can help with an upcoming fundraiser, current phone banking nights in support of Measure A, or volunteer for a board position – your support is dearly needed and greatly appreciated.
If there ever was a time to be active it is now! It is time to help protect our schools! Thank you!

ALL-MAIL BALLOT ELECTION
IN MAY TO SUPPORT
SANTA MONICA-MALIBU SCHOOLS*

Santa Monica and Malibu students receive an exceptional education that prepares them for the 21st Century and provides the skills needed for college and today’s careers. State budget cuts impact the quality of our local schools. The State has cut an average of $10 million each year over the last two years from funds owed to Santa Monica and Malibu schools, resulting in extensive cuts to teachers, staff and programs. More State budget cuts are on the way. Additional local funding can prevent a serious decline in the quality of our local schools.
A local funding measure has been placed before voters to provide local funding that the State cannot take away.
This measure will provide funding to:
· · Protect instruction in reading, writing, math and science
· · Minimize teacher layoffs
· · Keep class sizes as small as possible
· · Help protect music and arts programs
· · Keep school libraries open
· · Minimize cuts to counselors, who help students stay on track and prepare for college and careers
All funds will remain in our local schools and cannot be taken away by the State.
None of the funds can be spent on administrator salaries. An independent citizens’ oversight committee will ensure the funds are spent as promised.
Seniors age 65 or over can apply for an exemption.
* There will be no polling places open on Election Day. Your ballot will come in the mail, even if you do not normally vote by absentee ballot.
All-Mail Ballot Election in May to
Support Santa Monica-Malibu Schools*

MARCH HAPPENINGS IN CORE 1
March 17
– St. Patrick’s Day – It’s time to catch some leprechauns! Please turn in your leprechaun traps by Tuesday,
March 16. This could be our LUCKY year!!! Thank you to those who offered to bring in a healthy GREEN SNACK to share on that day. It is not too late if you would like to participate by bringing something. Just email one of us, or sign up in the Magic Garden by the family communication table.

March 17 Site Council Meeting – Part of the joy of learning that we experience at SMASH is through our constant COLLABORATION with one another: students with students, teachers with students, teachers with teachers, teachers with parents... you name it. We are a team, and it is through our respectful interactions that the children are challenged to think more carefully about themselves and the world. But it is also through this interaction that the teachers are pushed and challenged, too. Almost every Friday afternoon, the SMASH staff comes together to dialogue about our teaching and to collaborate further. We are constantly refining our own thinking about children and learning and what that all means to us.

As you may have noted, Chrysta and I have been absent a number of times this year for professional development. Through the various institutes that we've had the pleasure to attend, we have been overwhelmingly struck by the importance of collaboration at our school. We also feel that we do not share enough of this collaboration with our families. On this note and as a thank you to the PTSA for supporting our professional endeavors, I would like to facilitate a way
for parents to be more involved in this collaboration. I would like to include you in some of the deep conversations we have at SMASH - "How can we push our children to think more deeply?" , "How can we support the children to be democratic leaders in our community?", "How can the children learn to support one another?"
All of this, I believe, has to do with our collaborative spirit. I hope you will join me and Site Council next Wednesday, March 17th where I will share a quick video followed by a brief, structured conversation, much like the ones the teachers practice at our meetings. Together we will share our ideas and observations, which often leads to bigger questions and deeper understandings.

This is the beginning of a greater conversation that I hope will continue between the SMASH staff and families in the
months ahead. -Candis

March 18th – Field Trip to Will Rogers State Park
We will be taking a school bus to Will Rogers State Park for a day filled with picnics, hiking, and adventure. Please turn in your $5 and permission slip, if you have not done so already. (We noticed that families have been getting in the slips right away, and we really appreciate that. Thank you!) We would love to take AS MANY PARENTS AS POSSIBLE, so please sign-up if you can come. We will be leaving at 9am and returning around 1:30pm. All children will need: snack, lunch, walking shoes, and sunscreen.

Family Conferences – In Core 1 we have decided to start Family Conferences on Wednesday, March 17 (rather than the following week). Sign-ups are available in the office. A family questionnaire is in your child’s Friday Folder. Please turn in the family questionnaire ASAP, and at least the day before your child’s conference. This way, we can focus our time together in a way that best meets the needs of your child. This is something new we are trying this year, and we really appreciate, and look forward to, your participation in this new process. Thanks!

BIGS Writing Celebration – The BIGS will celebrate the publication of their FICTION books during two parts of the day on Friday, March 19. All Core 1 Families are welcome to join us during either of these time slots. The children are proud of what they accomplished, and would like to shared their books with EVERYONE, so this is how we planned to share them with the most people. During Morning Meeting the BIGS would like to share their books with the Partners, family and friends. We are also seeing our Core 3 Reading Buddies from 11:40-12:10, so we will share our books at that time as well. The BIGS will invite their siblings from all Cores to attend at this time, if they are available. So, family and friends are welcome to join us to celebrate and share our fiction books on Friday, March 19 from 8:30am-9:00am or 11:40am-12:10pm. Their books will also be available at our upcoming Family Conferences, if you are not able to attend either of these events. ~Chrysta

A Note from the BIGS
Dear Grown-ups,
We really want to write even more at home. We are sure the Partners do, too! These are the tools we have at school, and we would love to have them available to us at home. (Some of us do, and some of us don’t.) Please help me gather these supplies so that I can write more in my free time. I know how to write lots of different types of books and (most of us) want to write more in my free time.
Pencils Erasers, Scissors, Booklets of paper, Staplers/staples Staple remove,r Markers, Crayons, Colored pencils, Spines to bind my books (I can show you what I mean)
Thank you, Your Favorite BIG

P.S. Chrysta made a copy of one type of writing paper we use, and put it in the Friday Folder, so we can make copies. We can make our own paper at home, too!

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND, AND REMEMBER TO SPRING FORWARD!!

CORE 2 NEWS

Dear Fabulous Core 2 Families and Friends,
Conferences are around the corner. Please sign-up sheets are in the office. To prepare for the conference,
please think the following questions:
What growth have I observed in my child this year?
What social or academic goals is my child ready to take on now?
In what ways would I like to see my child grow socially and academically?
What role can the adults (parents and teachers) play in supporting my child’s goal?

Last week in Reading Workshop, students mined their information books for interesting facts to share with their book clubs and with the class. This week, they paid close attention to the thoughts that were provoked by the interesting facts. Nico read that puppies are born without teeth. This fact made him think that puppies were like human babies. Zoey read that puppies are born in litters. This fact made her wonder why human babies are usually born one or two at a time.

In Writing Workshop writers planned the table of contents and their chapter headings keeping in mind who they are writing the book for and what message their book is sending the readers.
In Math this week, Core 2 worked with real jog-a-thon numbers to calculate the total number of laps second graders ran, how many laps each advisory ran, how much money they will collect us for sponsoring them, and how much money we owe the entire second grade. Second graders used a 200 chart and third graders used a 300 chart to practice counting strategies.

Could we call it an epidemic? New incidences of lice were reported in Core 2 this week. Please continue to check your children for lice. There was a misconception that lice only lived in girl’s hair. We have addressed this misconception and continue to remind students to help prevent the spread of lice in Core 2 by refraining from sharing clothes, hats, or by playing with each other’s hair.

We thank you for your generosity in supplying our core with needed items this year.
We currently need:
Paper towels, Tissue, Hand sanitizer, Hypoallergenic hand soap

Next week’s Stars of the Week are Riley and Willow.

Dates to remember:
Monday, March 22 – Friday, March 26 – Spring Family Conferences – sign in the office
Friday, March 26th –Beach Day-more details will follow
Monday, March 29th – Spring Break Begins until April 9th
Enjoy a wonderful weekend! REMEMBER TO SET YOUR CLOCKS AHEAD 1 HOUR ON SUNDAY!

CORE 3 NEWS
Come see what we’ve been doing and join the fun:
Core 3 Family Book Club and Fantasy Writing Celebration
Thursday, March 18 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

Our focus on literacy is really paying off—Book Clubs are going well and we are publishing our Fantasy Picture Books! We hope you will be able to come share our enthusiasm for reading and writing! We try to host daytime, weekend, and evening events in order to accommodate various working families.
In Writing Workshop, the students are finishing up the Fantasy Unit by publishing hardcover picture books.
The Fantasy Unit has been quite a process, and the students are looking forward to sharing the final product with you. We want to share the process---all the work that led up to that final published piece--as well, because that is where are the deep thinking and good learning happens. First, we immersed ourselves in Fantasy stories of all kinds—Read Alouds, Just Right Books, DEAR, etc. We shared, discussed and experimented with a variety of fantasy styles and sub-genres to help students choose a story idea that would capture their imaginations and enable their writing and illustrating soar! The students spent a lot of time planning their stories and nurturing their characters, setting, and plot. We also talked a lot about what our stories are really, really about so they could be sure to put their message or meaning into the piece. For this unit, we are seeing everything from well-crafted picture books with just a few sentences on each page to long, complex stories with just a few pictures. They run the gamut from humorous, updated stories to science-fiction, supernatural pieces to classic fantasy/fairy tales. This is where all the hard work, new learning, and using what they already know about writing took place, and now it is time to publish. Some students are editing on the draft, while others are editing as they type. Some students are writing right on the pages of the book, while others are writing on paper to paste in. Some students are creating illustrations to cut and paste into the book, while others are drawing/painting/collaging right onto the pages. Everyone is having a ball!

Because we are publishing hardcover books, and we know that some students (and their parents ;-) want their books to be nearly perfect, we are allowing parent “editors” to spellcheck, proofread, type, and lend support on the final drafts. Please check in with your child to see if he or she would like to hire you as an editor. Please remind them to bring ALL work to and from school each day, so we have everything we need to publish. We will work on our books each day next week.

In Reading Workshop, the students are planning, discussing, and reading their books with their Book Clubs. They have been practicing for this all year during read aloud, and The Thief of Always has given us lots of fuel for rich analytical discussion! Each student has a bookmark with reminders about good reading strategies and conversation starters to guide their Book Club talks. Most students are loving their books and doing a great job of staying on target with their nightly reading plans. Sometimes being accountable to others is just the ticket to increase volume, stamina, and interest in reading! Ask you child about their book.

For our Family Book Club selections, we are encouraging students and a family member to read Hate That Cat or Firegirl (Tamara and Genie are reading both!). We have extra copies we will happily lend you so you can join our Book Club for Thursday Night. Don’t worry--even if you can’t find time to read/finish one of our books, you will be a welcome addition to our discussion groups next week.
See you on Thursday, March 18 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm

We will end this unit with a personal reflection on the meaning of the Constitution to one’s own life and also proposing new amendments to the Constitution.

In the spring, the whole Core 4 will study California water issues. This will be an interdisciplinary study, involving science, art, social studies, writing and math. IN ART we will make totem poles and screens of the California geographic regions studied by each group. . WE NEED, large old sheets or canvases, any donation of long pieces of soft wood or help finding repurposed wood. ALSO we need tools to carve. If you have wood working tools we can borrow, we will care for them well. FINALLY we NEED YOU!!!! We will making these poles during art on Wednesdays. If you can volunteer to help starting April 14, the times are 11:40-12:30 and 1:10-2. Please come for 8 Wednesdays from 11:40-2 if you can. All adult help to paint and plan is crucial. SAMOHI MASTERWORKS CHORAL CONCERT 2010: MOZART'S REQUIEM MASS Jeffe Huls, Conductor
The Santa Monica High School Choirs in conjunction with the instrumental music program will perform Mozart's monumental Requiem Mass on March 16th at 7PM in Barnum Hall. Completed mostly by his pupil, Süssmayr, Mozart died before he could finish the work. Containing eccentric drama, pristine beauty, and rigorous orchestral score it is often revered
as Mozart's crowning achievement. As it is frequently featured in movies and commercials, everyone will recognize melodies from the Introit, Kyrie, Dies Irae and the Requiem's most famous work, Lacrymosa. Please make plans to attend this amazing concert of collaboration, great music, and a tribute to one of music history's greatest works.
