Last Friday Letter of 2012!
December 14, 2012

Dear SMASHing Families,

Please add your SMASH voices to the District homework conversation and participate in the Homework Survey. It took me three minutes to complete mine as Micah and Eli’s mom.

Go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/L6SMCX9 for the English version
and https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/VL8HFZN for the Spanish version.

The district-wide results of the survey (by school level) will be posted on the district website after January 25, 2013. SMASH results will be shared at the February 13, 2013 Site Council meeting with minutes posted in the Friday Letter. December 2011, there were 92 SMASH responses to the SMMUSD Homework Survey. 81.3% said your child spends “about the right amount of time” doing homework. 69.2% said your child occasionally or never needs help completing homework independently. 30.8% said your child usually or always needs help

At SMASH we believe, homework should never be a source of family stress. Please respond to the survey so that we may see if this goal of low intensity homework is being achieved. If homework ever becomes a source of contention between you and your child, please contact your teacher so we can create a smoother homework agreement with your family.

Thanks for taking 3 minutes to give your thoughts about the type and amount of homework your kids experience at SMASH.

MUIR/SMASH JUNIOR GREAT BOOKS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
We need volunteers to help run our Junior Great Books program!
JGB is a nationally-recognized program for student book clubs, drawing on a diverse set of stories from all over the world to provoke student-led discussions of literature and life. Last year we ran four exceptional sessions for John Muir's 1st-3rd grades. This year we are partnering with SMASH to make new friends and share great books, and hopefully to expand to more grades!
We will run 6 week sessions from January to February, in parallel with the CREST Enrichment winter schedule, starting the week of January 14. You can run your weekly one-hour session on whatever days / times are convenient for you, we will work with your schedule.
Leading a session is immensely rewarding and fun -- the children will amaze you with their ideas!
Please contact peterjkovac@yahoo.com if you are interested in volunteering. No experience necessary. Sign-ups for your kids will occur in late November.

CORE 1 NEWS

Dramatic Arts -
We had a fantastic time sharing your drama work with the whole SMASH community. We had approximately 200 visitors who engaged in conversations about face painting, mask making, hat and crown making, and costume design with us. We visited Core 3 and had conversations with puppet-makers and puppeteers about the characters they created, and we were visited by big and small puppets created by Core 2 students. We are currently accepting orders for printed photographs, and because of your requests, we will be creating a video of the plays that you can order after Winter Break.

Community Group Morning Meeting -
SMASH held their second Cross Core Community Group Morning Meeting today. Community Group meetings are SMASH’s way of giving children an opportunity to spend time in multi-age groups. The meetings are intended to be fun and to help children feel a sense of belonging to the larger school community.
Meetings are planned by Student Council.

Some questions you could ask your child about Community Group Morning Meeting are:
Who is your community group morning meeting leader?
Where is your meeting?
Who are some older students you know in your community group?
How did you greet your people in your community group?
What game did you play in your meeting?

Projects-
The children continue to observe the natural world, explore with paper, and create characters with puppets and dolls. This week the children inspired to make paper dolls after enjoying the book Fanny by Holly Hobbie. In this story, a girl makes her own doll after she begs her mom to buy her the doll of her dreams, but her mom says NO. Some children would like to make fabric dolls. We would love to have fabric, yarn, buttons, thread, rick-rack,trim, tacky glue, embroidery needles, and hoops that you don’t need.

Wish List- (a few suggestions if you happen to be at the store):
Band-Aids (latex-free)
Hand sanitizer
Cleaning Spray (child-friendly)

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!

Reminder: Winter Break is December 24 through January 4.

CORE 2 NEWS
Can you feel it in the air? WINTER BREAK, we’re almost there!
With only 1-week left of school in 2012, we still have a lot going on!
Math Morning: Monday, December 17 from 8:30-9:30am. Please join us to learn more about the amazing
mathematical thinking that is happening in Core 2. Be ready to listen and learn from students as we all explore
math activities together. After the math activities, the teachers have planned a 15-minute Q&A session for
parents while the students head off to PE.
Friday, December 21 from 8:45am-12:30pm. CHAPERONES are greatly appreciated for our field trip to the
Santa Monica Pier Aquarium. Can you think of a better way to spend the last day?! Please email Tamara or
Jayme to sign up for the trip.
*Students need to wear comfortable walking shoes and weather appropriate clothing, bring a
snack and water bottle, and be ready to investigate water pollution.
In Writing, Core 2 is working our way through a Realistic Fiction writing piece. We are focusing on taking our
character through a problem and solution. Students are writing about kids that have trouble with friends,
families going through changes, and making plans to get a gift or pet they really want. This is a short writing
unit and we will be sharing within our own Core, students reading to students, on Thursday, December 20. Two
weeks is a long (and fun) time away from school. Core 2 will not be sending any homework, yet students should
continue to practice their skills while on Break.
Reading- Continue reading Just Right, Old Favorites, and Adventure Books. This is a great time to share your
books with family and friends that you may visit during break.
Writing- This is a perfect time to use those “real world” writing skills! You can write thank-you notes, holiday
cards, or letters to friends and family.
Math- Students can play a few math games with family and friends, measure ingredients for a new recipe, or
figure out how many hours/minutes you have away from school! ;-)
We are mixing it up here in Core 2! After the Break, we come back to NEW ADVISORIES! On the first day
back, January 7, students can check the list in their old advisory room to find out where they should go.
Good-byes are always bittersweet. We sadly say good-bye to our dear friend, Phoebe, as she returns to
Roosevelt Elementary. We wish her well and hope to stay in touch with our new friend and SMASH
community member.
Looking for the perfect gift for the holidays? You’re in luck!
Core 2 still has some amazing duct tape creations for sale! Stop by Jayme’s room to do a little shopping.

Dance Presentation Wednesday, 12/19, from 2:10-3:00 and would LOVE and APPRECIATE parents to come be our
audience in the Cafetorium that day!
· Tues, 12/18—5th grade body talk with Nurse Sandy-an email was sent out earlier this week.
6th Grade Math with Mimi: This week, we continued practicing the math skills we have been working on during this
unit. On Thurs, we took an end of unit math assessment. Next week, we will fill out a self-assessment to end our unit.
6th Grade Math with Erin: This week we did reviewed concepts of area and perimeter as we continued working on our
dream rooms. Some questions to ponder: Can shapes with the same area have different perimeters? What about vice
versa? Most students are almost done with their final floor plans and will now begin shopping within their $25,000 budget
to outfit their rooms. Students must record each "purchase" and buy flooring (wood, bamboo, carpet, etc.) while
calculating the price per square yard. The final step will be construction the model rooms.
5th grade Math Workshop with Genie: We have started our unit on fractions and their relationship to percents. We
have discussed where in the world we see fractions and how we use them.
Science with Mimi: Students completed research within their Clinic groups and began sharing their findings and
suggested treatments for their patients. Learning about our patients' problems and treatment options helps us to understand
the things we all need to do to stay healthy. Ask your student about some specific ways to prevent disease and stay
healthy. We will continue sharing next week and end our unit with a self-assessment.
Social Studies with Erin: Students continue to work hard on their Social Studies "issues" projects. Many groups have
participated in volunteer work or have made plans to do so. This week one of the groups doing a research/action project
on veterans decorated holiday trees to bring to VA hospitals. One of our animal rights groups is trying to connect an
animal rescue organization with the head of the John Muir Flea Market to secure a space to hold animal adoptions. The
groups studying homelessness have made connections to both OPCC and Upward Bound House. Many exciting things
are happening as students continue to learn about how these issues affect our community and what they can do to help.
Reading & Writing Workshop with Genie: We have been working on deepening our thinking to help our book talks be
more meaningful. We know using post-its can help track our thinking, which helps conversations to grow. We also
inventoried/ estimated how many pages we have read this year. If we have been in school for about 16 weeks and should
read about 100p/week, students should be at about 1600 pages. I say over 1000 is a good place to be and having read
under a 1000 pages should raise your eyebrows. We know reading volume does deeply affect a reader’s ability to grow
into a reader capable of the required reading in middle school/high school. Ask your child how many pages they have read
thus far this school year.
In writing we have begun drafting! Since we have 1 computer for every 2 students, we are learning to draft on the
computer and on paper (yellow paper in our class to differ from published white paper) and learning to combine the 2
mediums as we begin our drafting, revising, editing process. Parents are welcome to scribe or type and to give 1 or 2
teaching points at a sitting - for example, "As a reader, I'm wondering how this character is feeling, can we show it by
having him pace back and forth?" and "Wait, you paused when you were telling me this part. Seems like a period is
necessary." Or whatever 2 seem most important—sometimes it's hard to decide what is necessary and just because you
taught it once doesn't mean they will remember it the next time. That is the learning process. It's also fine to let your kid
be totally independent at home by just reminding them they have work to do.
Homework:
5G math: packet #16. Due 12/21/12
RW: read every day for 30-40 minutes (100 pages a week). This can include their book club reading!
WW: write 3 pages in your writing notebook per week or work on your fantasy short story draft!
This is the last Friday Letter of the year - Enjoy your Holidays!

CORE 4 NEWS
This week we wrapped up our drama class with Kristy. We spent 10 weeks developing skills we can use in
everyday life. The plays taught us skills like stage directions, active listening, public speaking/voice projection,
the effects of body language, and memorization. The eighth graders had a fantastic time working on these
projects.
This past Wednesday was our last drama class with Kristy and the class time was spent performing the plays.
During the performances, we learned the importance of memorizing lines, body language, active listening, and
public/loud speaking. The plays are affected greatly by these things. We learned that even if you skip a scene,
just keep on going with the play. Overall, working on these plays was really fun and we would like to thank
Kristy for a wonderful experience at SMASH this year and all the other years she has been a drama teacher at
this school. We also want to thank Kristy because spending time with us has changed the way we work, not
only in drama, but with everyday life! We learned a lot over the years and we are sad to not have anymore
classes with her because we will be moving on to high school!

Dear SMASH Families,
You will soon be getting an important letter from the Education Foundation regarding their Annual Appeal, called the Dollar A Day campaign. The campaign’s goal is $4 million by January 2014 to ensure that our children – and all children in our District – have the best educational opportunities available based on the District’s identified priorities which are in alignment with what we emphasize at SMASH:

Educational Excellence in Reading and Math: Your gift will provide schools with reading and math coaches and the tools necessary to improve, challenge and accelerate all students. These coaches would be in addition to the instructors we currently have at SMASH.

Investment in Staff: Your contribution will make sure that our teachers receive high quality education and training that keeps them at the forefront of best practices and educational innovation. We are hopeful this will provide SMASH instructors access to continued Reading and Writing Workshop training, Project-based
Learning Workshops, Math, and Responsive Classroom professional development.

Instructional Assistants in the Classroom: Your gift will provide academically-trained assistants to teachers to boost student reading and math performance. We all celebrate the importance of the instructional assistants, Malaika, Nadja, and Laura, who are on our SMASH team.

School Enrichment: Your commitment will ensure that schools continue to choose special programs which enrich students’ education and are tailored to each school’s unique environment. This money could help to pay for SMASH drama, visual arts, middle school music, and perhaps new creative programs such as dance. Please read your letter. You can donate online (www.smmef.org) or mail your contribution using the remit envelope that comes with your letter.

We honor the high level of participation and financial contribution you have already committed to the SMASH Annual Family Investment (AFI). We acknowledge this $1 a Day Education Foundation campaign is an additional appeal coming in the heart of the holiday season, but we encourage your consideration of this worthy cause.

Let’s show our SMASH Leadership in embracing this new funding system and cultural change by supporting
the Education Foundation campaign with whatever amount you can afford.

CIRCLE GROUPS: We switched CIRCLE GROUPS last week, and the children have new circle group teachers. Candis’ group named themselves the Turquoise Otters. Chrysta’s group named themselves the Dancing Dolphins. Graciela’s group named themselves the Golden Owls. These are our “Winter Circle Groups.” Your child will move in to their third and final Circle Group in the spring, experiencing all three Core 1 teachers, and most Core 1 children, in their Circle Groups. Your child will always stay with their Family Group.

Even Turtles Like Vacations!!
Franklin, our class turtle, is looking for a kind and caring family who would like to host him at their house over Winter Break. If you have a space in your home for his "vacation home" (a smaller tank in the classroom) and will not be traveling over the holidays, you might just want to care for Franklin for 2 weeks. This requires transporting and setting him up in your home (Candis can help) and feeding him every day. Then bringing him back in January. Food and supplies are provided. Please email Candis ASAP if you're interested.

Core 1 Drama Share
We hope friends and family can come to our CORE 1 DRAMA SHARE on WEDNESDAY, DEC 12, 9am-10am. We will be sharing photos, videos, and artifacts of our experiences in the classrooms.

Projects
November is the time in Core 1 when we begin to delve into our project studies. Your child visits every teacher once a week to continue these investigations.

Puppets, Dolls, and Our Stories - Graciela
Our Environment – Candis
These past couple of weeks, the children have been learning about the different kinds of paper (chipboard, newsprint, wax paper, corrugated cardboard, etc.) and exploring the properties of each type of paper. Many have discovered that water creates a change when added to paper. Some have explored the idea of “flooding” and the powerful force of water.

The cardboard is getting weaker and weaker. Soon it will get so weak, it will fall apart. ~Kobi

Just like tissues, as soon as you put too much water on the cardboard, it breaks. ~Nick

I noticed with the cardboard, when you put a ton of water on it, it feels like papier-mâché. Both are decomposing. Since the pumpkins are getting all mush…same thing with the cardboard. It’s getting all mush like the pumpkins. ~Luca

…With the water. ~Theo

I noticed about the cardboard, it can always bend, but it is stronger in every way. ~Ivy

When I saw the newsprint at first, I thought it was regular old newspaper. And then I looked closer and I saw splinters
of wood in the paper, but your couldn’t get splinters with it. ~Owen

The box was rotting when water was in it, like it was breaking down. ~Olivia

Like the pumpkins? ~Genevieve

CORE 2 NEWS

We hope you had fun shopping, snacking, listening to music, and seeing friends at the Holiday Boutique –
TODAY from 11:30 – 5:00! Their were so many original, unique, beautiful creations from SMASH students, alum, parents, and community merchants. What a great way to get into the holiday spirit!

The Book Fair is up and running 12/10 – 12/14, so stop by before, during or after school to pick up some books for yourself, your kids, gifts, and Core 2. Look for the Core 2 “wish box” at the Book Fair!

Great things are going on in Core 2, and we happily invite you to be a part of it. We realize that it is not possible for busy, working families to participate in every Celebration, Field Trip, Sharing, Parent Education event, and Fundraising opportunity. We try to help the kids understand that, as well. Please know how much we value your time AND how glad we are when you are able to join Core 2. Over the year, we will continue to include parents in a variety of ways on different days/at different times of day to accommodate your busy lives. Read on for more than a handful of opportunities coming up before Winter Break:

Who will be the next President of SMASH? You may have heard Marcus’s Maggie has been doing a special literature project with a small group of third graders. They have been meeting on Tuesday mornings doing an in-depth creative exploration of a character who they wanted to "become." Each child has picked a character they know well from a favorite book, and in tandem with the presidential election, journaled from their character's point of view, designed a campaign poster, informational pamphlet, and written a speech on why THEY (the character) should become "President of SMASH." The students are now prepared to give their campaign speeches to the class on why they should be elected, as their character. Please check in with your child to see if they are part of this group. If so, ask them about costume, props, etc. they feel they need to help them get into character for the big day. Parents are welcome to come watch the speeches on Dec 18 at 9:30 a.m. in Jayme’s room. Hope to see you there!

Visual Arts Sharing with Julianna: Wednesday, 12/12, 11:15 am - We will be meeting with Julianna in your child’s Advisory Room to get an overview of puppetry history and our puppet making process and creation. Then we will parade with our puppets through all over SMASH from 11:40-12:15.

Core 2 Math Parent Education Morning is right around the corner - Monday, December 17 from 8:30 – 9:30.
Parents are invited to come hear, learn, and participate in our TERC Investigations math program side-by-side with your kids. This promises to be an educational and fun-filled morning, with guaranteed “aha” moments. We hope you will be able to join us.

On Friday, December 21, we will be taking a walking trip to the Santa Monica Pier Heal the Bay Aquarium.
We will walk down in the morning and return before lunch. Please have your child bring a portable snack and dress sun/ weather appropriate. Let Jayme or Tamara know if you would like to join us.

Giving is in the air. As you know, the students voted to donate money to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy victims in honor of Thanksgiving. They raised almost $200, and with Tamara’s “matching” donation, that brings our total to $400! After Alie, Malia, and Alex from Core 3 shared their project to donate money or toys to The Children’s Lifesaving Foundation for the holidays, the Core 2 students voted to give $50 of the money we had collected to their cause. Students are still welcome to bring in new, unopened toys to donate to . We are very proud of the kids for demonstrating such empathy and caring for others.

Have a great weekend!

6th Grade Math with Mimi: We finished up the last section of our current math unit by continuing to work on strategies that help us find equivalent fractions, decimals, and percentages. Knowing how to use multiple strategies helps us become stronger and more versatile mathematicians. On Thursday, we were lucky enough to get in a full day of finishing up work and asking lots of questions. Next week, we will have more practice and a unit test on Thursday.
6th Grade Math with Erin: We were fortunate to have another parent guest speaker share with our mathematicians this week as they continue working on their dream rooms. Eleanor's mom Beck came in to share with the class about her process as a designer. Beck showed the class slides of an existing house she is currently working on and then the artistic renderings of the proposed finished product. She explained the math that she uses in each step, from her first general measurements to looking at and measuring the angles of the house as a passerby will see it from the street. Next week we may take a walking field trip to look at the house since it is right in our neighborhood. Thanks Beck for sharing your passion with us!
5th grade Math Workshop with Genie: We are spending a little bit of time with 3D geometry and volume as an introduction and a connection to how we use multiples and factors. Ask your child how to find the volume of a box or a rectangular room.

Science with Mimi: Students continued to research about their "patients", answering questions about their condition and possible treatments. We continued our conversations about working in cooperative groups by reflecting on what we can do to improve small group interactions and productivity. Identifying specific behaviors that help or hurt small group discussions/projects is a key to the reflection process.

Social Studies with Erin: We continued working on their projects with a focus on presentation. On Monday we had a lesson about why visual presentation matters and what details show pride in presentation. We looked and how and why presentation matter in the real world by looking at copies of resumes, food packaging, invitations, school projects, and two people dressed for an interview (thank you to American Girls Kaya and Kaya for the guest appearance). At the students looked at each of the examples they took notes about what showed pride in presentation (appropriate content, neatness, typed work, color, nice taping or gluing, correct spelling, neat and cleanly dressed, etc.) and what did not (ripped paper, spelling errors, cross outs, paint splattered clothing, crushed food, etc.). We will be thinking of these things as they prepare their SS visual presentations and about why this matters in the real world. On Wednesday and Friday students continued working on various aspects of their projects. Some groups are delving into their essays, other groups are still setting up volunteer opportunities and rallying the community for their cause. Other groups are doing a bit more research and still others are beginning their visual presentations - either on the computer or on poster boards.
Homework:
5G math: packet #15. Due 12/14/12
6G math: no homework
RW: read every day for 30-40 minutes (100 pages a week). This can include their book club reading!
WW: write 3 pages in your writing notebook per week! Finish collecting ideas for your character and setting!

CORE 4 NEWS

7th Grade
In Humanities, we are working on forming Governments. We had to get in groups of three, and choose our
form of Government. Most of us turned in our first draft of our Government’s Constitution. Then on 12/12,
our 2nd draft of our Constitution is due, plus our Governments Bill of Rights poster. Then on 12/19 is our
final project due date.

In Science this week, we started chemistry and chemical reactions. We finished organizing our binder, and
put in covers that represent us in the front. We also got handouts and diagrams to help us understand basic
chemical reactions. We did a daily page and activity about Atoms and Molecules and change of state.

In Math, we wrote a plan of the sections we are going to work on until winter break. We had it signed by
our parents and should be following our plans. We have all been working at our own pace, and doing a lot of
independent work.

JAMS THEATRE COMPANY (Open to SMASH Middle School students)
My name is Dana Murphy and I am the Director of JAMS Theatre Company and the Spring Musical. If you haven't heard already, this year our Spring Musical is going to be Seussical, Jr.! It is a fantastic show with wonderful music, tons of fun and hilarious characters (all of your favorite Seuss characters, with a twist!), and an inspiring story. I am so excited to get started.
FIRST MEETING: Our first meeting of JAMS Theatre Co. will be on Monday, December 10 from 3:30-5:30pm in the Auditorium. I hope to see you all there. We will be introducing everyone to each other, talking about the program, playing some theatre and improv games, and talking about auditions and the show as well.
PARENT MEETING: Our mandatory meeting for parents of JAMS Theatre Co. students will be on Monday, December 17 at 6:30pm in the Auditorium directly following our second round of auditions on that day. Please mark your calendars and there will be more info about this to come!

SCHEDULE: JAMS Theatre will meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and some Fridays from 3:30-5:30pm in the Auditorium (occasional rehearsals will also be held in the Dance Room next to the Gym). The performances of the show will be May 9th, 10th, and 11th. Again, more details will come as we go along.

AUDITIONS: We will begin auditions for Seussical on Wednesday, December 12 from 3:30-5:30pm. Auditions will continue through Friday, December 14 from 3:30-5:30pm and Monday, December 17 from 3:30-6pm. Casting will hopefully be finished by our meeting on Wednesday, December 19 so that we can do read-throughs of the show and then we will not meet on Friday, December 21 so that you can all enjoy your winter breaks!
If you would like to find out more about the show, read the plot, learn about the characters, and hear some of the music, please check out this website: http://www.mtishows.com/show_detail.asp?showid=000296
It would also be good to start thinking about what song you would like to sing for your audition. I will want to hear just a verse and a chorus of any song of your choosing, preferably something that can show me your acting ability as well as your vocal ability (we will talk more about this at our first meetings). We will also read some scenes from the show and do a short dance audition as well. I don't force anyone to audition who doesn't want to, but to be considered for a major role it is a requirement. Don't worry, we will work on audition techniques and you will be in an extremely supportive and non-competitive environment. Plus, I'm really nice and not scary at all! =]
DESIGN TEAM:The last thing I want to mention is the JAMS Theatre Company DESIGN Program! For students who would prefer to be behind the scenes rather than onstage, we also offer a program every Friday at lunch in which company members can learn about Lighting Design, Costume Design, Set Design, and Backstage Crew. You can be in the show and also participate in the Design portion if you like. Our first meeting of JAMS Theatre Co. Design Team will be at lunch on Friday, December 14th in the Dance Room.

OUR YEARBOOK PHOTO: will be on Wednesday the 19 at 3:40, just after the start of theatre! Students should please plan ahead and don't be late!

Ocean Park Street Paving
Currently, the contractors who are working on Ocean Park construction anticipate
CLOSING Ocean Park Blvd. for grinding and paving purposes
Wednesday, Dec. 5 and Thursday, Dec. 6.

While we are working with them to lessen the impact on our school site,
drop off or pick up will be affected on either or both of those days.
Pick up and Drop off along 5th Street will be CLOSED those days,
as it does not have the capacity to allow cars to turn around safely.

Families may only drop off or pick up along 6th Street.

·       Cars will head SOUTH on 6th Street.
·       ALL cars will use the valet lane on the right side.
·       Cars will then proceed into the east 6th Street parking lot to turn around and
head back on 6th Street going north.

Reminder, John Muir starts at 8:20 and SMASH starts at 8:30.

The east lot will be closed to all traffic and parking except handicapped spaces or school bus. Preschool families will park along 6th street and enter in the gate next to the preschool bungalow for these days only.

Thank you for your patience as we ensure the safety of Muir/ SMASH students and their families, along with our faculty and staff during street closures.

We switched CIRCLE GROUPS this week, and the children have new circle group teachers. Ask your child about it this weekend!!

THIS MONDAY, DECEMBER 3RD is a field trip for ALL PARTNERS and SOME BIGS (everyone who didn’t go last time). We will be taking the Big Blue Bus to the Santa Monica Aquarium at 9am and walking back to school by 1pm. All children will need to bring a snack and lunch, good walking shoes, and sunscreen. Any chaperones are welcome! Candis would appreciate an email beforehand if you intend to come along.

Core 1 Drama
Our 3 months of exploring character development in Kristy’s Drama Class will soon be coming to an end. After weeks of drama games, mask-making, face painting, and costume design, the children had many opportunities to make some of our favorite stories come alive.

We hope friends and family can come to our CORE 1 DRAMA SHARE on WEDNESDAY, DEC 12th 9am- 10am. We will be sharing photos, videos, and artifacts of our experiences in the classrooms.

Projects
November is the time in Core 1 when we begin to delve into our project studies. Your child visits every teacher once a week to continue these investigations. We hope you enjoyed our email this week to give you a taste of what has begun in Candis’ study about the Environment. Continue to look for these updates about our Projects in future emails and Friday Letters.

Materials in our World (with a focus on wood, paper, and fabric) - Chrysta
Puppets, Dolls, and Our Stories - Graciela
Our Environment – Candis

Projects are a special opportunity for the children to explore the world around them. We don’t just interact with the world, but we carefully make observations, ask thoughtful questions, creatively represent our thinking, and develop/ revise our theories about the world. The children are constantly discussing with each other and building on each other’s ideas. Here’s an example: (Written by Candis)

One day I was struck by the number of children who came to tell me that there was a spider in the bathroom and that I needed to “come and kill it.” Some children were too scared to go into the stall. And I began to wonder what the children’s ideas about spiders were, since many of the spiders in the small yard were dangerous (a striking number of black widows and brown widows!) So, the next morning, I posed the question to my circle group:

Do you think spiders are good and bad?
Here is a glimpse of our discussion:

Keira LG: I think that spiders are good because… well, I can’t explain it.
Mira: Because they can’t really hurt you if you don’t hurt them. If you try to hurt them, then they might try to hurt you, but mostly people don’t try to hurt them because they’re scared of them.
Skylar: They’ll hurt you if they feel like you’re threatening them.
Maggie: I think it’s in the middle because daddy long legs won’t hurt you but maybe black widows will.
Teagan: Daddy Long Legs don’t hurt people because they don’t have anything to hurt with. Some people try to kill them but that’s not good because they’re a part of nature.
Taj: Some could be bad, but some can bite you when you’re not expecting it.
Skylar: They run away from my finger, so I think they are scared of us.
Enjoy the weekend!

Hi Core 2 Families and Friends,
Our Fantasy Writing/Reading Unit has come to an end. Thank you to all the families that joined us to celebrate all of our hard work, dedication, and effort in creating fantastical, creative stories. The students were so proud of their ability to add details, humor, and “show not tell.” Here are some lines from Core 2’s Fantasy Stories:

*As they were crawling back, they hadn’t realized they didn’t change yet. –Sadie
*I hope I don’t have to resort to the fog horns! –Lucca
*“I’ll smush you if you don’t!” –Cole
*“I’m bored,” said Elisa. –Elisa
*“Old like history,” said Ivy –Ram Rattan
*They packed a bag, left a note, and started walking. –Phoebe
*I thought she could and “poof” she was gone. –Nalani
*And time never unfroze. –Rio
*She was in her room with her brother, Xander. –Liliana
*Four minutes later, the ice plane landed in a dangerous forest. –Kim
*I was at the big yard. –Andrea
*It all starts on a regular school day. –Marcus

*After that, Fred lived happily ever after…in two places. –Sofia Marie
*The closet was empty! –Samy
*“Quiet! It’s not funny!” Mr. Seemorebutts said as he started to cry. “Waaaaa!” All the kids watched in horror. – Clair
*Without warning, a “KNOCK, KNOCK,” on the door. “For goodness sakes! Who could be awake in the middle of the night?” said Cat. –Sydney
*I was walking to my first class and I saw flying pigs, jumping chickens, and dancing cows. I thought I was going crazy, but at lunch, I saw vegetables doing karate and fruit reading. -Shira

Visual Arts with Juliana: Our puppets are incredible! We are excited to share them with you and hope you can come to our Arts Share on Wednesday, December 12 from 10:30-11:30. The puppets, their process and the puppet makers will be available to share their journey from idea to puppet. We are still looking for a photographer parent to take portrait shots of the puppet maker and their puppet. Please contact Genie if you are interested.
6th Grade Math with Mimi: This week, we began working with percentages and how they are related to fractions and decimals. Using percentages, fractions, and decimals interchangeably will conclude our current math unit. HW is due 12/6. If your child gets stuck while doing HW, please don't stress. Just have them bring it to school for help. HW is provided as practice for students who find it helpful and/ or enjoy doing it.
6th Grade Math with Erin: The students are immersed in their geography project of designing their own dream room. They completed their scale models of the classroom and have now moved on to designing their own 625 square foot bedroom. They must draw the shape of their choosing to fit within that specific square footage. Once students have created their idea, they will transfer their plan to graph paper to make sure it is mathematically sound. Then they will begin figuring out the flooring, painting, and furnishing of their room on their $25,000 budget. We were fortunate to have Caleb and Simeon's dad come in this week to talk about his work as a developer. He brought in multiple sets of blue prints for the students to look over and talked about the process in reality - from artistic rendering, to blue prints, to meeting with the engineer to make sure the structure is sound, to visiting the building and safety department to make sure the design is up to code. It was very informative and definitely showed our students how what they are learning about is applicable to real life. Thanks Ken!
5th grade Math Workshop with Genie: We ended our large number addition and subtraction unit with some conversation on expanded notation and exponents. It's great because every student in our math group has solid strategies to solve large number subtraction problems. Story problems can lead to some challenges on what really needs to be solved. Please continue to talk through your real world math problems and share how you would solve them-even if you use the calculator. We have moved onto 3D geometry looking at how to know the volume of a box. Class work and homework from the last unit went home—please check your child's backpack to see their work.

Science with Mimi: Clinics received Code Cards with brief descriptions of sick patients on them. Clinics will work together to research, diagnose, and figure out appropriate treatments for their patients. Cooperative group work is one of the most difficult tasks for many students. One way we continue to work on this skill is by thinking about how to be tolerant and respectful of other points of views. For example, a group member might respectfully disagree and offer their own viewpoint by saying, "I can see your point, but what about....?" or "I thought of something totally different". Learning how to work with others in a productive and respectful manner is one of the keys to success in school and in the workplace.

Social Studies with Erin: This week we worked on our projects and also prepared for our Friday visit to the Skirball, "Creating the United States" exhibit. In terms of our projects, as I wrote in an email blast, the students have become very invested in their research. We have students connecting with USO groups to meeting veterans coming home from deployment, others who have researched bullying of gay teens and are thinking about starting an action group on campus. Our 3 groups of students studying homelessness have connected with Upward Bound House in Santa Monica and will soon be starting a "household items drive" to help the residents in their transitional housing program. Others have been volunteering with animal rescue groups, trying to help stray animals find loving homes. Our women's health care group is trying to arrange a field trip to Planned Parenthood LA and hoping to do some Peer Education. Another group is studying US involvement in South American drug cartels. It is very exciting! Your students are looking into their passions and becoming more knowledgeable and passionate about these issues in the process! To prepare for our Skirball visit we spent a few class periods looking at and learning about Primary Sources. What can one learn from a primary source as opposed to a textbook or non-fiction account? What are we looking for when we look at Primary Sources? What was the intent of the author? What was happening during that time period? We are all historians!

Reading and Writing Workshop with Genie: We had a wonderful Literary Essay Celebration where professional and sophisticated language was written and shared! We have begun Fantasy writing by focusing first on the main character—our hero/ heroine. We are also progressing in our book club discussions focusing on our individual hopes and dreams and by analyzing video clips of conversation. We will begin to encourage everyone to use post-its in their books to help build better conversation around books. We have also spent some of our time working on the Holiday Arts Boutique where your child's creativity and handy work will be on sale Friday, Dec 7 at the Holiday Arts Boutique! We hope you can volunteer or at least stop by and shop!

Homework:
5G math: packet #14. Due 12/7/12
6G math: HW is due 12/6
RW: read every day for 30-40 minutes (100 pages a week). This can include their book club reading!

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

Hello Smash Community,

We'd like to take this opportunity to proudly congratulate Arati and her entire SMASH Arts & Letters team for creating, planning, publicizing and pulling off such an incredibly successful event.

For those of you who attended, you know what an amazing, inspiring, night it was, full of beautiful art, delicious food & wine all complemented by a crowd of parents representing schools from across the district. If you didn't make it to this one, don't miss the next one!

It was a huge success for many reasons:
The second-ever SMASH Arts & Letters Sale raised close to $11k for visual arts programs in elementary schools throughout SMMUSD (with $40 art, not an auction!)
We are the first school in the district to host an event in support of centralized fundraising and look forward to    attending events hosted by other schools
The event increased awareness of SMASH in our community at-large.
Members of the city council and school board attended.
Local and prominent artists contributed hundreds of works of art.

None of this would have been possible without the generosity of the following sponsors from our community:
Venue & Wine: Yahoo!
Raffle Items: Paul Velick, Aubrey Studebaker, Utrecht Art Supplies, Paint Lab
Food: Border Grill, Fairmont Miramar, Fig Restaurant, JiRaffe, La Vecchia, Lobster, Locanda del Lago, Michael’s, MisFit, Ocean & Vine at Loews, Tiato
Frames: LA Art Exchange
Balloons: La Pinata, Partyland

It takes a village and here's a list of some of those from our village who made it all happen: Arati, Mazi, Matt, Darren, Molly, Claire, Jessica, Helga, Jess, Nikki, Snow, Ben Rogers, Ben Karlin, Tina, Amber, Nina, April, Michelle, Jeannine, Marni Gittleman, Marni Ayers, Andrea, Kelly, Allison, Marsha, Claudia, Leah, John, Dan, Megan, Barbara, Holly, Ginger, Belinda and Matia.  Thanks for all your hard work!

Have a great weekend,
Jamee Tenzer and David Saltzman

Green Up Your Holidays
If you are a holiday shopper, remember to take your reusable shopping bags when you go retail shopping. A good idea is to have a couple of bags, washed clean, dedicated to retail shopping so germs from groceries don't contaminate your gifts. Reuse things like leftover or old linens/scarves/clothes, newspaper, and shopping bags to wrap gifts.
