Dear SMASHing Families,
Answer to yourselves YES or NO. On 5th Street, at 2:50 M-TH or 1:30 F pickup times:
*I have seen cars parked in the loading only zone.
*I have seen cars double parked in the middle of the street.
*I have seen parents or babysitters abandon their cars and walk onto campus searching for the students they are taking home.
*I have seen students wander through the parking lot or in the middle of the street looking for their ride home.
*I have seen some other unsafe pickup time practice.
Assuming all of you answered YES to some of the above, I KNOW you want to be a helpful part in making dismissal safer. Many thanks to Maggie Sennish (Marcus’ mom Core 1) who has offered to coordinate a safer dismissal pilot program until the end of the school year. We have seen how wonderfully drop off works thanks to Jackie, Susan, Mai, and Dean, let’s try it at pickup too!
If you are available to come one day a week at 2:40 (or Friday at 1:20) to unlock the gate, call students to the cars in the loading only zone, remind people not to double park, and remind students not to wander into the parking lot or middle of the street, then please contact Maggie at magsen@earthlink.net or (424) 216-2475.
Thanks in advance for volunteering and/or being more conscientious about these safety conditions.
Jessica

The SC shall analyze and draft an SIP ANALYSIS based on the actual outcomes of the improvement plan and on reports from the SMASH community. The SIP ANALYSIS shall be utilized in development of subsequent School Improvement Plans. CORE 2 NEWS
Dear Fantastic Core 2 Families and Friends
,
Celebrations were the week’s highlight. In Writing Workshop, we prepared for our poetry celebration to which we invited our families and friends. The 2nd graders hosted 1st grade writers from Core 1. The 1st graders read their information books to 2nd graders. This gave the second graders an opportunity to re-connect with their partners from last year. It also gave students who are new to SMASH a chance to form a new partnership.

Our Core 2 students played a significant part in this week’s assembly led by the Student Council.
Malia, Eleanor, Ava, Giulia, Audrey, Lily, Zelda, Nathan, Nicholas, Morgan, Audrey, Aurora, Abigail, Lillian and Carissa dressed up in 50’s clothes. The fashion show gave us ideas of what we could wear to the Family Dance. We also learned some dance moves from the 1950’s. The family dance promises to be a fun celebration.

In Reading Workshop, we celebrated our students’ growth as readers. We held reading conferences with individual students. Students read excerpts while we took notes on their reading. At the end of the conference, we celebrated the growth each child has made in reading this year. The reading conferences will continue next week. Please return our library books by May 27th. Please look for them at home. All Media
Center and Core 2 books need to be return in order for the Main Office to send home your child’s end of the year Progress Report.
In Math this we celebrated returning to our math routines after a week and a half of testing. The third graders launched a unit in measurement. We see a Balobbyland in our future. The second graders launched a geometry unit.
Friday, May 28 – Core 1 & Core 2 BBQ It’s make a shopping list! When you shop this week, don’t forget to add your contribution to the barbecue. We are looking forward to this festive, culminating celebration. The celebration will begin at 11:00 am. We will be firing up the grills at 10:30 in the Small Yard. Can you bring a grill? Please let us know. We hope that you will join us for this fun event!
There are only 19 days left of school. We miss you already.
The Stars are back. Our Star of the week celebration will resume this week. Zoey and Anthony are the Stars!
Dates to remember:
Wednesday, May 26– Star of the Week and Community Snack, 9 – 10:15 AM in Core 2
Thursday, May 27 – Music Assembly for 3rd graders to learn about the instrumental music program for 4th graders, 9:20 to 10:00am

CORE 3 NEWS
Thanks to all the families, teachers, and administrators who walked our neighborhoods with city council, school board, and district staff in support of Measure A and our schools! Let's make sure all the people we know get their ballots in the mailbox today! After today, the ballots need to be hand delivered—ballot drop box info will be available Monday and Tuesday at SMASH morning drop off.

As the year is winding down, students and teachers naturally reflect on the past year, assess the successes and areas for continued growth, and make plans for the summer and next school year. Reflecting on Reading Workshop as a whole in Core 3, we can say it has been a very successful year (or two). Core 3 is a community of invested, engaged, excited readers! All the students grew as readers, developing better reading habits, skills, and comprehension. Some students read almost every day and devoured books at school and home—reading 20-30 books in 9 months! Other students read in school during our scheduled time for independent reading, but had a difficult time finding motivation and/or time to read at home. These students read 8-15 books. Reading practice is vital to all learning because so much of how we learn a discipline, subject, or area of interest is through reading. Time and volume in reading is a critical component of reading success. Planning for reading really helps keep students accountable to their reading goals. We recommend that you discuss summer reading plans with your child and help remind them throughout the summer to hold themselves accountable to their reading plan. Core 3 students are very reflective, they know what they do well and what they are still working on as readers.

Along with daily reading practice, we focus our reading lessons on comprehending and analyzing texts. We do this by articulating our thoughts and ideas clearly to carry on a conversation about a book with peers or write a reading response essay. The only way to grow your thinking is to share it and see what other smart readers think. If a child is shy or reluctant to talk and share their thinking during discussions and reading conferences, it is hard to assess their reading understanding. If students don’t articulate their ideas and support them with thoughtful reasons and examples, it is hard to follow their thinking. The other way to know what a reader is thinking is for them to write down their ideas as a reading response. In Core 3, we practice all of these things. We hope that the opportunities to turn and talk to their rug partner and be in book clubs as well as conferences with the teacher on their reading has helped them grow and will give them the reading skills they need to love reading, thinking, talking, and writing about books.

Another important aspect of reading is nonfiction reading, which we practice through research, projects, and reading in content areas (science, social studies, etc.). Our goal is for students to not just learn and regurgitate information, but to learn, think, and form ideas about the information so they can use the facts to support their idea. Just like
ideas about fiction and poetry, they can talk and write about these ideas—and these skills will be used in school for years to come.

Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self-Control (CARES) are necessary tools to be a successful reader, which is why we look at students through that lens when we assess them as readers on the narrative evaluations. Ask your children how they use CARES in reading their books and talking about books.

Core 3 will be having our final literacy celebration on Friday, May 28 from 11:30-12:30. We will be celebrating the units we have been working on since Spring Break, sharing our writing process, and showing off our published work (It's the day of the Core 1 and 2 BBQ, so just pop by when you have a moment if you are at the BBQ.) We will follow the sharing with a Pizza Party for the kids to celebrate a great year in Core 3! If you can't make this daytime sharing, please join in celebrating your child’s musical growth at the Spring Concert on Tuesday, June 1 at 6:30 and/or our Open House Arts Sharing, where Core 3 will be performing their plays on Wednesday, June 9 at 6:00.

CORE 4 NEWS
It is a busy time of year. I will try keep this to the point.
We are all working together towards the Thurs, June 10 "California Water Wars" event. Please JOIN US!!! 10:30-2:30

What you can do at home for Water Wars:
Ask your student about their California Bioregion and about their opinions about water use in California.
Remind students to focus on the following projects: research and persuasive and play script writing and other projects (slogans, chants, stickers, poster) about their Bioregion. Ask your child what they are responsible for in the group project.
Tell your child that CLASS TIME REALLY COUNTS: ALL SCIENCE WORK IS DONE IN CLASS and NOT to be worked on at HOME.

All Students are now writing a personal memoir. We are utilizing the personal narrative and realistic fiction styles but choosing a topic that is about one's own life that is a "SMALL and MEANINGFUL EVENT." They want to select an experience in their life that helped them learn something about his/herself, another person or the world/ life. Some students refer to these type of experiences as "turning points, " "Epiphanies", "Ah Ha" moments or simply when a realization was made.
What you can do to support the MEMOIR unit:
Help you r child generate ideas for a memoir, focusing on details, showing writing and internal thought. All students have a BLUE MEMOIR FOLDER of the mentor texts we selected. You can have your student read some that we have not yet read in class.

FIELD TRIP for all of CORE 4: Thursday, May 27:
We are going to the ANNENBERG SPACE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY to view the National Geographic Exhibit on Water.
We will take the #7 bus up Pico and walk 1/2 mile to the center.
I need chaperones. 6/7 grade parents leave SMASH at 10:15 and 8th grade parents leave at 11:15

PLEASE SIGN YOUR CHILD'S PERMISSION SLIP THEY NEED A BAG LUNCH AND GOOD WALKING SHOES AND MONEY ( or a pass) FOR THE BLUE BUS
