friday letter 09-18-09

Available online www.smash.smmusd.org September 18, 2009

Dear SMASHing Families, “Laughing is a group activity. It gives you a feeling of solidarity. Laughing is extremely conducive to cooperation,” according to Shyan Sutorius, the 70 year old founder of the Center for the Promotion of Laughter, whose area of specialization has been laughing mediation for 30 years. (Cited in Ode Magazine July edition). Staff, students, and family members had a wonderful giggle together on Wednesday morning playing “Electricity” at the first all school Morning Meeting Assembly of the year! We met our Responsive Class-room goals of creating a sense of belonging, significance, and fun as we greeted each other in song, had staff members share compliments to the students, tested our Cooperation and Self-control skills during the activity Electricity, and read a Morning Message together. Our next Assembly will be lead by Core 3 on Wednesday, September 30, 8:45-9:15 in the Cafetorium. Hope to see you there.Truly yours, Jessica Let us know if you need a hard copy of the Friday Letter. E-mail Janice at jwold@smmusd.org with your e-mail address if you want the letter sent to you electronically.

Welcome to Core 1!!
Core 1 is becoming more familiar with the routines and materials in the classroom so we can be independent and creative thinkers. We have also been focusing on our community so we can support one another in our endeavors and every day living. Check out our blog at http://core1smash.blogspot.com/ this weekend for an inside look at what is going on in Core 1.
Circle Groups: The children are quickly getting comfortable with their new circle groups. Chrysta’s group has named themselves The Tiger Sharks, and Candis’ group is The Flying Carpets.

Reminders: All kindergarteners should be picked up in the small yard at 1:30. This helps keep everyone safe and organized. This is also where they get picked up for aftercare and classes. We try not to disturb the Bigs, who are staying for the afternoon.

If you’ve made arrangements for your child to go home with someone else, please make sure you send us a note. Or you can post your note on the bulletin board next to the Core 1 office door.

All students need a change of clothes (in a bag with his/her name) in case of spills, slips, or occasional accidents. Please continue to check your child’s bag, for these bags will need to be replenished when they are used.
Core 1 Forum: Save the date: Thursday, September 24 from 6:00 – 7:00pm. This is a great night for parents to learn more about the Core 1 curriculum and about what we do on a daily basis. This will also be an opportunity to sign up for a volunteer job or for a time to help in the classroom. Childcare will be provided by a handful of 8th graders and your donations support special Core 4 trips.

Birthday Bash: September birthdays will be celebrated on Friday, September 25 during lunch. Our ceremony will begin at 11:45, and we will eat our lunch and birthday snacks around 12:00. If your child is celebrating his/her birthday in September, food/drink sign-ups will be on the Home/School Table (in the Magic Garden). Please bring a small, healthy snack for 46 students. Suggestions will be posted near the Home/School Table. Family and friends are welcome.

Thank you to all of the families for donating supplies and money for classroom materials. We hope to “spoil” the children with these high-quality and creative resources to enhance their learning.
Wish List (a few suggestions if you happen to be at the store): Plastic spoons, Q-tips, sponges

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND!!

Dear Core 2 Community, September 18, 2009

Our community building was focused around Cooperation. We brainstormed how it would look in Core 2. Both advisories used the democratic process to decide on their names. Graciela’s Advisory is The Orange Question Marks and Laura’s Advisory is The. Yep! Just one simple word.

In Reading Workshop, the children explored some of the book baskets and had time to look through the books and share with another student. They had access to their grade leveled textbooks – music (3rd grade only), math, science, social studies, and reading.

In Writing Workshop, we have learned that writers write about topics that they care about. Each writer made a map or her/his heart as a tool to get ideas for writing topics. They will add on to their maps though out the unit, Launching the Workshop. This includes the Workshop model and learning writerly behaviors.

Math: The 2nd graders explored Pattern Blocks, Multi-Link Cubes, Geoblocks, Tangrams, and Polygon Tiles. These will be some of the manipulatives we will use throughout the year. The 2nd graders played games using a 100 chart. Use the attached 100 Chart so your child can teach you Guess My Number and Count My Number. Also attached is their Math Log for this week.
The 3rd graders have begun their first unit – Things that Come in Groups. See attached family letter and homework. Please get involved with them on their homework that is due on Tuesday, September 22.

Our afternoon Community Building Time will prepare our advisory groups for working together.

Thank you!
For helping your child to remember to wear the appropriate shoes to P.E. Our schedule this year is Tuesday 1:05 to 1:50, Wednesday 10:30 to11: 10 and Thursday 8:30 to 9:15. On Thursday, your child needs to sign in with their Advisor and then go meet Nadja at the Lunch Benches.
For all the supplies, help, and monetary donations
To the PTSA for the t-shirts and supplies for our tie-dying

Dates to remember:
Friday – today – 3rd Grade District Music began
Friday, September 25 9:00 -10:15 T-shirt tie-dye, led by Ari and Mica’s dad, Mike. We will provide all the supplies, including the t-shirts.

Welcome to your first Friday Letter, Core 3 Families!

The Friday Letter contains (almost) everything you need to know about SMASH and Core 3 each week. We hope that you will make it a habit to read and share this letter with your child over the weekend. (We promise to keep it short, informative, and worthwhile!). The purposes of the Friday Letter are:
· to give you information about our academic and social curriculum
· to explain projects and ongoing assignments
· to restate deadlines and due dates that should be recorded in your child’s planner
· to announce field trips and special activities where you are invited to join us
· to remind you about important Core 3 and SMASH events
· to provide you with conversation starters so you can discuss school with your child

On that note…
Our focus in the first few weeks of school has been/will be on community building, establishing classroom guidelines and routines, and assessing where we are and what we know--and where we would like to go in Core 3 this year!!!

Advisories have been set and we’ve been getting to know each other in our Advisory groups during Morning Meetings, as well as in grade level groups for math. Remember, Advisory is just one small part of our day—the students will be working in other groupings in different curricular areas throughout the day with both Genie and Tamara. We’re lucky to also have Malaika, Ingrid, Jayme, and Carrie also providing support in both groups.

Homework is an integral part of Core 3’s curriculum. The students should read a Just Right Book every night for 20-30 minutes (a book they can read by themselves that they enjoy reading—not that you think they should be reading!). Students are also collecting special pictures, artifacts, and items to decorate their Writers Notebooks so they have a place to do their nightly writing homework, which will start next week. It is important for students to read and write every day for fun, to learn, and for practice. Along with reading and writing homework, students will be receiving math homework packet attached to the Friday Letter each week. It is due the following Friday. Ideally, doing a little bit of math homework every day provides your child’s math mind the daily practice needed to grow and allows more opportunities for “aha” moments.

We hope you found the Core 3 letter in the first day packet useful/informative. Please fill out and return all forms to Janice in the front office so we will be ready to go on our first walking field trip. If you need another copy, just ask Tamara or Genie. We know you still have lots of questions: What is Magic Circle? When does art start? What is community snack? How can I help? What is the daily schedule? These questions, and more, will be answered at the Core 3 Forum on Tuesday, September 29 from 6:00 – 7:30. See you there!

Dates to Remember:
No school 9/28
Thursday, 9/29 – Core 3 Forum 6:00 – 7:30

Have a great weekend!
Tamara, Genie, and Malaika

CORE 4 NEWS
Friends,
Welcome to a year of SMASHING science! Our program is composed of four complementary elements:
1. Community Based Field Studies
Units of study: Santa Monica Stories and Learning to Look/Coastal Zone Monitoring/Mapping Our Place/Service Projects
2. Guided Investigations and Student Interest Based Investigations (SIBIs) These tend to be classroom based experiments or activities but may vary depending upon student interest
3. Reading for Information (Non-Fiction Literacy) This effort includes direct instruction in reading strategies using engaging non-fiction readings from philosophy, science history, and current events.)
4. Place Based Environmental Education Trips Catalina, Yosemite, Temescal Canyon, Camp Hess Kramer, San Francisco and Heal the Bay’s aquarium at the Santa Monica pier.

Science Program Goals
While encouraging student’s existing natural curiosity, student investigators will learn to use the processes of scientific inquiry to develop evidence and investigate significant scientific ideas and concepts. In broad terms the science experience at SMASH is organized and evaluated with reference to the acquisition of four critical habits:
Reading, writing and performing calculations with clarity, precision, and accurate representation of observed facts (Habit of accuracy) “Persistence is the twin sister of excellence. One is a matter of quality; the other a matter of time.” (Habit of persistence)
Initiative, questioning, and flexible thinking (Habit of creative questioning)
Application of past knowledge to new situations via responsible risk taking (Habit of making connections)
In essence then, I propose to help your child learn how to think like a scientist while having “serious fun” interpreting and investigating the natural world around them.
Achieving in Science
Science Class: As the work-load mounts, and family life is stressed, questions stir the land. “How may I employ the systems at SMASH to insure that my child thrives?” or “How do I help my student achieve in science?” To help answer these inquiries, I have prepared an achievement primer…

Achieving In Science: A Primer for Secondary School
Please pardon the list:
· Encourage children to complete projects independently. We are trying to develop competent and autonomous students not further dependency. Guide them, help them, inspire them, even collaborate with them, but don’t do the work for them!
Encourage them to ask clarifying questions during class! This critical skill is central to achievement in high demand secondary school and college environments. The average listener retains less then 15% of what is said in class. By comparison, the average questioner retains over 50% of the verbal material. Ask them if they are asking questions in a persistent manner.
· Remind them that they are organized into work support groups, called Inquiry Groups, of three to four learners precisely to cover them in the event of absences, brain fades or confusion. Students should be turning to these helpers by phone or email to clarify routine academic matters.
· Ask them to describe how they are using their classroom and study hall time. Students have two hours of study hall per week to ask clarifying questions, seek personalized instruction from teachers, and solve scheduling problems. Many of the most effective students finish all of their assigned review tasks during these periods as a result of focused, diligent effort; others socialize and give themselves homework. Please ask them how they are using this time.
· Do they visit with the teachers after school or at lunch? Are they using email to stay in touch? Teacher help is always available by dropping around for short questions and by appointment, if needed.
· Science has peer tutoring available from highly effective former students from SMASH who will help current students navigate the demands of middle school science and math.
· I encourage questions by email and have the email posted in the room most days of the week.
In conclusion, science has only one type of recurring homework assignment. Science Daily Pages (DPs) should go home with students at least once a week for parent review and signature. Please, ask to see your learner’s daily pages. If done correctly, this process will keep you informed about our current learning goals, key scientific concepts, and in the best cases have spurred fun conversations between parents and their learners.

This is a high demand/high support class and a no excuse zone! We have every possible support in place to help students achieve. Encourage them to use these systems consistently and we will find ourselves frolicking in the sylvan fields of joyful learning all year long.

Please, email me if you have any questions or drop around during study halls on Wednesday.

Kelly’s advisory (still working on our name!):
Here it finally is…the first official sharing of the happenings in our advisory! Over this past week, we have experienced many successes within our group. Having fun, becoming comfortable with our peers, and understanding the expectations of this new academic year have held as the main focal points of our beginning days. We have greeted our friends each morning, shared exciting stories, and partaken in challenging games.
Another focus we have had involves making declarations and goals for this upcoming year. Through independently writing and the sharing of stories, as individuals, we grasped ideas of accomplishments we can and will do this year! The group transitioned their thinking from hopes and dreams to these “I will…” statements. These declarations will be posted in our room throughout the year as a reminder that each day in our work we are on a road to reach these goals. Come in and take a peek to see all the “places” we will go this year!

Sweating the Small Stuff! : Math
Over these past couple of weeks, the students have started to believe and assume their roles as strong and capable mathematicians. In many instances, we think, “don’t sweat the small stuff”, but in these first few weeks our motto changed to “sweat the small stuff”. The small stuff includes the multiple routines and procedures that take place within the Math class. We have taken numerous opportunities to discuss each routine and procedure for the class. This helps to ensure a smooth transition to Math and to set up for a successful year. It also allows us to create more academic time when our routines and transitions are efficient! In Algebra, the use of a textbook and the details of the grading system have been our focus this past week. Because these are two factors that our students hold inexperience with, we will ensure that they have a strong understanding of these key elements.
At the same time that we devoted our efforts to these responsibilities, we also began to delve into reviewing math concepts. Students are starting to demonstrate their various strategies and take risks amongst their new classmates. Next week, we will invest time into thinking about our goals as mathematicians and begin to crack into this year’s math curriculum. To determine their goals, we will encourage the students to think about concepts they want to learn more about, skills they want to improve, and most importantly their math attitudes.
Next week…Reading Workshop details!

Hello Core 4 Families, We are off to a wonderful, spirited start to the school year.
In Humanities, we are focusing on community building, getting to know one another, issues of identity and our CARES. Along with making sure the students understand and can follow the schedule and shared routines, we are beginning to build the deep commitment to CARES- Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility (respect) Empathy and Self Control. Please check in with your child to discuss how they are feeling about school and their personal engagement in the program. We can not teach effectively without their investment in these values!
We will begin "Book Clubs" in two weeks. The book selections will revolve around the theme of friendship.
I have the Blue group for Writers Workshop. We are starting the year with a Personal Narrative unit. Each student should have a Writers notebook and make 4 entries a week, spending 15 minutes per entry. Genie from Core 3 is joining me on Mondays for the instruction so that we keep continuity with last year.
It was wonderful to see many of you on Tuesday. I look forward to a more in depth discussion next Tuesday.
On a personal note, The beginning of the school year is always crazy. This is compounded by two factors for me this year. 1) I only was hired on September 1st. 2) my mother has an acute medical situation and is in the hospital at Stanford Medical Center. I am leaving Thursday after school (9/17) and returning Monday night. Please bear with me. Jayme Wold is filling in for me and Kurt, Kelly and I talk and plan daily. Warmly, Bailey

Santa Monica – Malibu Unified School District
1651 16th Street Santa Monica, California 90404 310.450.8338

September 9, 2009

Dear Parents,

The Santa Monica – Malibu Unified School District is committed to keeping all of our students and staff as healthy as possible. We know that uncertainty about the H1N1 flu virus continues to be a concern here and nationwide. Like many school districts across the nation, we are preparing for the possibility of a significant increase in the number of flu cases this fall. We are taking precautions to protect our students and staff, and we need parental support to help keep all of our children as healthy as possible.
You can help your child and all children by taking the following precautions. Please talk with your child
about these practices.

• Stay home when sick. Those with flu-like illness should stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines.

• Wash hands frequently - with soap and water when possible.

• Cover noses and mouths when coughing or sneezing, with a tissue or a shirt sleeve or elbow if no tissue is available.

• Avoid sharing food utensils or drinking bottles.

• Plan ahead. Because it is so important for those who are sick to stay home, we encourage all families to start planning alternative child care options so that they can keep their child home from school, daycare, or afterschool programs during an illness.

As part of this proactive effort, SMMUSD will continue to:
• Maintain close communication and comply with recommendations of the County Public Health Department officials and the cities of Santa Monica and Malibu. Information about the flu is frequently updated and changed as researchers learn more. Marolyn Freedman, SMMUSD’s Director of Pupil Services, and I receive all updates, and we will implement the best practices and policies for optimum student health.
• Communicate important updates to parents and the SMMUSD community. Parents can get also get updates at our website, www.smmusd.org/health.
• Encourage sick students and staff to remain at home until they are symptom free.
• Encourage parents to report suspected cases of the flu to a school official.
• Monitor students or staff suspected of being ill with the flu.
• Remind students and staff to use best hygienic practices to prevent the spread of germs and viruses.
• Revise our response plan as information is updated.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping all our children, staff and community in good health.

Sincerely,
Michael D. Matthews, Ed.D.

president’s note
Dear SMASHing Parents,

Welcome to 2009/2010! It was nice to catch up with everyone at our Welcome Back Coffee on the first school day. Tuesday’s Back to School Night brought together old and new staff members, parents and students to chat about plans for the new year. And although it was not a fundraiser, we’ve received several thousand dollars in Family Donations just that evening! Thanks to all of you who contributed already. We hope that many will follow your example, for one of our main goals is 100% participation in this year’s Family Donation Drive. Please look for the envelopes in this Friday Letter.

Thanks so much to all of you who volunteered to help on a PTSA committee or at a fundraiser. If you have not yet signed up, rest assured it’s never ever too late. We truly welcome and encourage everybody’s help, questions, concerns and ideas. We’ve listed the names and contact information of our board members and committee chairs in this Friday Letter. Please don’t hesitate to contact any of us! Our doors are wide open! And please join us at this year’s first PTSA meeting on Wednesday, 9/23 at 8:15AM. See you then!

Our annual Family Donation Drive is our biggest and most important fundraiser
. Without your contribution, many PTSA sponsored programs such as the Arts Program cannot continue, and some of our staff members would not have a job. Please give whatever you can, and give as soon as possible, so we can meet our commitments for the school year. Please check for the envelope in his Friday Letter. Thanks!

SMASH Bash is here! A new and unique fundraiser consisting of events hosted by parents throughout the year, SMASH Bash is designed to be eclectic and meet different and differing tastes. Please note that FIGHT NIGHT was postponed! The new date will be announced soon. Contact Marni Brady for more information, or if you’d like to host a bash.
Our weekly Core Fundraisers, also known as Bakesales, are back by popular demand. Actually, they’re back because they proved so successful: We raised $6000 last year! Please check out the schedule in this Friday Letter. Each Core is welcome to sell baked goods, popcorn, SMASHing t-shirts and sweatshirts, pencils, water bottles and spin art. If you have ideas for other items to sell, contact your Core Rep. Thanks!
Greenraising, our annual wrapping paper sale, will start shortly. It’s recycled wrapping paper, and so much more… choose from a catalogue full of environmentally friendly goods such as water bottles or lunch boxes.
