Dear SMASH Families,
You will soon be getting an important letter from the Education Foundation regarding their Annual Appeal, called the Dollar A Day campaign. The campaign’s goal is $4 million by January 2014 to ensure that our children – and all children in our District – have the best educational opportunities available based on the District’s identified priorities which are in alignment with what we emphasize at SMASH:

Educational Excellence in Reading and Math: Your gift will provide schools with reading and math coaches and the tools necessary to improve, challenge and accelerate all students. These coaches would be in addition to the instructors we currently have at SMASH.

Investment in Staff: Your contribution will make sure that our teachers receive high quality education and training that keeps them at the forefront of best practices and educational innovation. We are hopeful this will provide SMASH instructors access to continued Reading and Writing Workshop training, Project-based
Learning Workshops, Math, and Responsive Classroom professional development.

Instructional Assistants in the Classroom: Your gift will provide academically-trained assistants to teachers to boost student reading and math performance. We all celebrate the importance of the instructional assistants, Malaika, Nadja, and Laura, who are on our SMASH team.

School Enrichment: Your commitment will ensure that schools continue to choose special programs which enrich students’ education and are tailored to each school’s unique environment. This money could help to pay for SMASH drama, visual arts, middle school music, and perhaps new creative programs such as dance. Please read your letter. You can donate online (www.smmef.org) or mail your contribution using the remit envelope that comes with your letter.

We honor the high level of participation and financial contribution you have already committed to the SMASH Annual Family Investment (AFI). We acknowledge this $1 a Day Education Foundation campaign is an additional appeal coming in the heart of the holiday season, but we encourage your consideration of this worthy cause.

Let’s show our SMASH Leadership in embracing this new funding system and cultural change by supporting
the Education Foundation campaign with whatever amount you can afford.

Jessica, Jamee, and David

CORE 1 NEWS

CIRCLE GROUPS: We switched CIRCLE GROUPS last week, and the children have new circle group teachers. Candis’ group named themselves the Turquoise Otters. Chrysta’s group named themselves the Dancing Dolphins. Graciela’s group named themselves the Golden Owls. These are our “Winter Circle Groups.” Your child will move in to their third and final Circle Group in the spring, experiencing all three Core 1 teachers, and most Core 1 children, in their Circle Groups. Your child will always stay with their Family Group.

Even Turtles Like Vacations!!
Franklin, our class turtle, is looking for a kind and caring family who would like to host him at their house over Winter Break. If you have a space in your home for his "vacation home" (a smaller tank in the classroom) and will not be traveling over the holidays, you might just want to care for Franklin for 2 weeks. This requires transporting and setting him up in your home (Candis can help) and feeding him every day. Then bringing him back in January. Food and supplies are provided. Please email Candis ASAP if you're interested.

Core 1 Drama Share
We hope friends and family can come to our CORE 1 DRAMA SHARE on WEDNESDAY, DEC 12, 9am-10am. We will be sharing photos, videos, and artifacts of our experiences in the classrooms.

Projects
November is the time in Core 1 when we begin to delve into our project studies. Your child visits every teacher once a week to continue these investigations.
Materials in our World (with a focus on wood, paper, and fabric) - Chrysta
Puppets, Dolls, and Our Stories - Graciela
Our Environment – Candis
These past couple of weeks, the children have been learning about the different kinds of paper (chipboard, newsprint, wax paper, corrugated cardboard, etc.) and exploring the properties of each type of paper. Many have discovered that water creates a change when added to paper. Some have explored the idea of “flooding” and the powerful force of water.

The cardboard is getting weaker and weaker. Soon it will get so weak, it will fall apart. ~Kobi

Just like tissues, as soon as you put too much water on the cardboard, it breaks. ~Nick

I noticed with the cardboard, when you put a ton of water on it, it feels like papier-mâché. Both are decomposing. Since the pumpkins are getting all mush…same thing with the cardboard. It’s getting all mush like the pumpkins. ~Luca

…With the water. ~Theo

I noticed about the cardboard, it can always bend, but it is stronger in every way. ~Ivy

When I saw the newsprint at first, I thought it was regular old newspaper. And then I looked closer and I saw splinters
of wood in the paper, but your couldn’t get splinters with it. ~Owen

The box was rotting when water was in it, like it was breaking down. ~Olivia

Like the pumpkins? ~Genevieve

December Birthday Bash- Next Friday, December 14 - Birthday children are invited to bring in their favorite fruit or vegetable to prepare in the morning and serve at our celebration.

CORE 2 NEWS

We hope you had fun shopping, snacking, listening to music, and seeing friends at the Holiday Boutique –
TODAY from 11:30 – 5:00! Their were so many original, unique, beautiful creations from SMASH students, alum, parents, and community merchants. What a great way to get into the holiday spirit!

The Book Fair is up and running 12/10 – 12/14, so stop by before, during or after school to pick up some books for yourself, your kids, gifts, and Core 2. Look for the Core 2 “wish box” at the Book Fair!

Great things are going on in Core 2, and we happily invite you to be a part of it. We realize that it is not possible for busy, working families to participate in every Celebration, Field Trip, Sharing, Parent Education event, and Fundraising opportunity. We try to help the kids understand that, as well. Please know how much we value your time AND how glad we are when you are able to join Core 2. Over the year, we will continue to include parents in a variety of ways on different days/at different times of day to accommodate your busy lives. Read on for more than a handful of opportunities coming up before Winter Break:

Who will be the next President of SMASH? You may have heard Marcus’s Maggie has been doing a special literature project with a small group of third graders. They have been meeting on Tuesday mornings doing an in-depth creative exploration of a character who they wanted to "become." Each child has picked a character they know well from a favorite book, and in tandem with the presidential election, journaled from their character's point of view, designed a campaign poster, informational pamphlet, and written a speech on why THEY (the character) should become "President of SMASH." The students are now prepared to give their campaign speeches to the class on why they should be elected, as their character. Please check in with your child to see if they are part of this group. If so, ask them about costume, props, etc. they feel they need to help them get into character for the big day. Parents are welcome to come watch the speeches on Dec 18 at 9:30 a.m. in Jayme’s room. Hope to see you there!

Visual Arts Sharing with Julianna: Wednesday, 12/12, 11:15 am - We will be meeting with Julianna in your child’s Advisory Room to get an overview of puppetry history and our puppet making process and creation. Then we will parade with our puppets through all over SMASH from 11:40-12:15.

Core 2 Math Parent Education Morning is right around the corner - Monday, December 17 from 8:30 – 9:30.
Parents are invited to come hear, learn, and participate in our TERC Investigations math program side-by-side with your kids. This promises to be an educational and fun-filled morning, with guaranteed “aha” moments. We hope you will be able to join us.

On Friday, December 21, we will be taking a walking trip to the Santa Monica Pier Heal the Bay Aquarium.
We will walk down in the morning and return before lunch. Please have your child bring a portable snack and dress sun/ weather appropriate. Let Jayme or Tamara know if you would like to join us.

Giving is in the air. As you know, the students voted to donate money to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy victims in honor of Thanksgiving. They raised almost $200, and with Tamara’s “matching” donation, that brings our total to $400! After Alie, Malia, and Alex from Core 3 shared their project to donate money or toys to The Children’s Lifesaving Foundation for the holidays, the Core 2 students voted to give $50 of the money we had collected to their cause. Students are still welcome to bring in new, unopened toys to donate to . We are very proud of the kids for demonstrating such empathy and caring for others.

Have a great weekend!

6th Grade Math with Mimi: We finished up the last section of our current math unit by continuing to work on strategies that help us find equivalent fractions, decimals, and percentages. Knowing how to use multiple strategies helps us become stronger and more versatile mathematicians. On Thursday, we were lucky enough to get in a full day of finishing up work and asking lots of questions. Next week, we will have more practice and a unit test on Thursday.
6th Grade Math with Erin: We were fortunate to have another parent guest speaker share with our mathematicians this week as they continue working on their dream rooms. Eleanor's mom Beck came in to share with the class about her process as a designer. Beck showed the class slides of an existing house she is currently working on and then the artistic renderings of the proposed finished product. She explained the math that she uses in each step, from her first general measurements to looking at and measuring the angles of the house as a passerby will see it from the street. Next week we may take a walking field trip to look at the house since it is right in our neighborhood. Thanks Beck for sharing your passion with us!
5th grade Math Workshop with Genie: We are spending a little bit of time with 3D geometry and volume as an introduction and a connection to how we use multiples and factors. Ask your child how to find the volume of a box or a rectangular room.

Science with Mimi: Students continued to research about their "patients", answering questions about their condition and possible treatments. We continued our conversations about working in cooperative groups by reflecting on what we can do to improve small group interactions and productivity. Identifying specific behaviors that help or hurt small group discussions/projects is a key to the reflection process.

Social Studies with Erin: We continued working on their projects with a focus on presentation. On Monday we had a lesson about why visual presentation matters and what details show pride in presentation. We looked and how and why presentation matter in the real world by looking at copies of resumes, food packaging, invitations, school projects, and two people dressed for an interview (thank you to American Girls Kaya and Kaya for the guest appearance). At the students looked at each of the examples they took notes about what showed pride in presentation (appropriate content, neatness, typed work, color, nice taping or gluing, correct spelling, neat and cleanly dressed, etc.) and what did not (ripped paper, spelling errors, cross outs, paint splattered clothing, crushed food, etc.). We will be thinking of these things as they prepare their SS visual presentations and about why this matters in the real world. On Wednesday and Friday students continued working on various aspects of their projects. Some groups are delving into their essays, other groups are still setting up volunteer opportunities and rallying the community for their cause. Other groups are doing a bit more research and still others are beginning their visual presentations - either on the computer or on poster boards.
Homework:
5G math: packet #15. Due 12/14/12
6G math: no homework
RW: read every day for 30-40 minutes (100 pages a week). This can include their book club reading!
WW: write 3 pages in your writing notebook per week! Finish collecting ideas for your character and setting!

CORE 4 NEWS

7th Grade
In Humanities, we are working on forming Governments. We had to get in groups of three, and choose our
form of Government. Most of us turned in our first draft of our Government’s Constitution. Then on 12/12,
our 2nd draft of our Constitution is due, plus our Governments Bill of Rights poster. Then on 12/19 is our
final project due date.

In Science this week, we started chemistry and chemical reactions. We finished organizing our binder, and
put in covers that represent us in the front. We also got handouts and diagrams to help us understand basic
chemical reactions. We did a daily page and activity about Atoms and Molecules and change of state.

In Math, we wrote a plan of the sections we are going to work on until winter break. We had it signed by
our parents and should be following our plans. We have all been working at our own pace, and doing a lot of
independent work.

MUIR/SMASH JUNIOR GREAT BOOKS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS
We need volunteers to help run our Junior Great Books program!

JGB is a nationally-recognized program for student book clubs, drawing on a diverse set of stories from all over the world to provoke student-led discussions of literature and life. Last year we ran four exceptional sessions for John Muir's 1st-3rd grades. This year we are partnering with SMASH to make new friends and share great books, and hopefully to expand to more grades!

We will run 6 week sessions from January to February, in parallel with the CREST Enrichment winter schedule, starting the week of January 14. You can run your weekly one-hour session on whatever days / times are convenient for you, we will work with your schedule.

Leading a session is immensely rewarding and fun -- the children will amaze you with their ideas!

Please contact peterjkovac@yahoo.com if you are interested in volunteering. No experience necessary. Sign-ups for  your kids will occur in late November.

JAMS THEATRE COMPANY (Open to SMASH Middle School students)
My name is Dana Murphy and I am the Director of JAMS Theatre Company and the Spring Musical. If you haven't heard already, this year our Spring Musical is going to be Seussical, Jr.! It is a fantastic show with wonderful music, tons of fun and hilarious characters (all of your favorite Seuss characters, with a twist!), and an inspiring story. I am so excited to get started.
FIRST MEETING: Our first meeting of JAMS Theatre Co. will be on Monday, December 10 from 3:30-5:30pm in the Auditorium. I hope to see you all there. We will be introducing everyone to each other, talking about the program, playing some theatre and improv games, and talking about auditions and the show as well.
PARENT MEETING: Our mandatory meeting for parents of JAMS Theatre Co. students will be on Monday, December 17 at 6:30pm in the Auditorium directly following our second round of auditions on that day. Please mark your calendars and there will be more info about this to come!

SCHEDULE: JAMS Theatre will meet Mondays, Wednesdays, and some Fridays from 3:30-5:30pm in the Auditorium (occasional rehearsals will also be held in the Dance Room next to the Gym). The performances of the show will be May 9th, 10th, and 11th. Again, more details will come as we go along.

AUDITIONS: We will begin auditions for Seussical on Wednesday, December 12 from 3:30-5:30pm. Auditions will continue through Friday, December 14 from 3:30-5:30pm and Monday, December 17 from 3:30-6pm. Casting will hopefully be finished by our meeting on Wednesday, December 19 so that we can do read-throughs of the show and then we will not meet on Friday, December 21 so that you can all enjoy your winter breaks!
If you would like to find out more about the show, read the plot, learn about the characters, and hear some of the music, please check out this website: http://www.mtishows.com/show_detail.asp?showid=000296
It would also be good to start thinking about what song you would like to sing for your audition. I will want to hear just a verse and a chorus of any song of your choosing, preferably something that can show me your acting ability as well as your vocal ability (we will talk more about this at our first meetings). We will also read some scenes from the show and do a short dance audition as well. I don't force anyone to audition who doesn't want to, but to be considered for a major role it is a requirement. Don't worry, we will work on audition techniques and you will be in an extremely supportive and non-competitive environment. Plus, I'm really nice and not scary at all! =]
DESIGN TEAM:The last thing I want to mention is the JAMS Theatre Company DESIGN Program! For students who would prefer to be behind the scenes rather than onstage, we also offer a program every Friday at lunch in which company members can learn about Lighting Design, Costume Design, Set Design, and Backstage Crew. You can be in the show and also participate in the Design portion if you like. Our first meeting of JAMS Theatre Co. Design Team will be at lunch on Friday, December 14th in the Dance Room.

OUR YEARBOOK PHOTO: will be on Wednesday the 19 at 3:40, just after the start of theatre! Students should please plan ahead and don't be late!
