Ocean Park Street Paving
Currently, the contractors who are working on Ocean Park construction anticipate
CLOSING Ocean Park Blvd. for grinding and paving purposes
Wednesday, Dec. 5 and Thursday, Dec. 6.

While we are working with them to lessen the impact on our school site,
drop off or pick up will be affected on either or both of those days.
Pick up and Drop off along 5th Street will be CLOSED those days,
as it does not have the capacity to allow cars to turn around safely.

Families may only drop off or pick up along 6th Street.

·       Cars will head SOUTH on 6th Street.
·       ALL cars will use the valet lane on the right side.
·       Cars will then proceed into the east 6th Street parking lot to turn around and
head back on 6th Street going north.

Reminder, John Muir starts at 8:20 and SMASH starts at 8:30.

The east lot will be closed to all traffic and parking except handicapped spaces or school bus. Preschool families will park along 6th street and enter in the gate next to the preschool bungalow for these days only.

Thank you for your patience as we ensure the safety of Muir/ SMASH students and their families, along with our faculty and staff during street closures.

We switched CIRCLE GROUPS this week, and the children have new circle group teachers. Ask your child about it this weekend!!

THIS MONDAY, DECEMBER 3RD is a field trip for ALL PARTNERS and SOME BIGS (everyone who didn’t go last time). We will be taking the Big Blue Bus to the Santa Monica Aquarium at 9am and walking back to school by 1pm. All children will need to bring a snack and lunch, good walking shoes, and sunscreen. Any chaperones are welcome! Candis would appreciate an email beforehand if you intend to come along.

Core 1 Drama
Our 3 months of exploring character development in Kristy’s Drama Class will soon be coming to an end. After weeks of drama games, mask-making, face painting, and costume design, the children had many opportunities to make some of our favorite stories come alive.

We hope friends and family can come to our CORE 1 DRAMA SHARE on WEDNESDAY, DEC 12th 9am- 10am. We will be sharing photos, videos, and artifacts of our experiences in the classrooms.

Projects
November is the time in Core 1 when we begin to delve into our project studies. Your child visits every teacher once a week to continue these investigations. We hope you enjoyed our email this week to give you a taste of what has begun in Candis’ study about the Environment. Continue to look for these updates about our Projects in future emails and Friday Letters.

Materials in our World (with a focus on wood, paper, and fabric) - Chrysta
Puppets, Dolls, and Our Stories - Graciela
Our Environment – Candis

Projects are a special opportunity for the children to explore the world around them. We don’t just interact with the world, but we carefully make observations, ask thoughtful questions, creatively represent our thinking, and develop/ revise our theories about the world. The children are constantly discussing with each other and building on each other’s ideas. Here’s an example: (Written by Candis)

One day I was struck by the number of children who came to tell me that there was a spider in the bathroom and that I needed to “come and kill it.” Some children were too scared to go into the stall. And I began to wonder what the children’s ideas about spiders were, since many of the spiders in the small yard were dangerous (a striking number of black widows and brown widows!) So, the next morning, I posed the question to my circle group:

Do you think spiders are good and bad?
Here is a glimpse of our discussion:

Keira LG: I think that spiders are good because… well, I can’t explain it.
Mira: Because they can’t really hurt you if you don’t hurt them. If you try to hurt them, then they might try to hurt you, but mostly people don’t try to hurt them because they’re scared of them.
Skylar: They’ll hurt you if they feel like you’re threatening them.
Maggie: I think it’s in the middle because daddy long legs won’t hurt you but maybe black widows will.
Teagan: Daddy Long Legs don’t hurt people because they don’t have anything to hurt with. Some people try to kill them but that’s not good because they’re a part of nature.
Taj: Some could be bad, but some can bite you when you’re not expecting it.
Skylar: They run away from my finger, so I think they are scared of us.
Enjoy the weekend!

Hi Core 2 Families and Friends,
Our Fantasy Writing/Reading Unit has come to an end. Thank you to all the families that joined us to celebrate all of our hard work, dedication, and effort in creating fantastical, creative stories. The students were so proud of their ability to add details, humor, and “show not tell.” Here are some lines from Core 2’s Fantasy Stories:

*By the way, they were 16 and they were going with their boyfriends. –Dixie
*It was summertime in New York and Max was hot. –Oisin
*I walked upstairs. They were covered in spiders and dead things. –Olin
*The next day at school, Robin kept a secret from everyone. –Lilly
*As they were crawling back, they hadn’t realized they didn’t change yet. –Sadie
*I hope I don’t have to resort to the fog horns! –Lucca
*“I’ll smush you if you don’t!” –Cole
*“I’m bored,” said Elisa. –Elisa
*“Old like history,” said Ivy –Ram Rattan
*They packed a bag, left a note, and started walking. –Phoebe
*I thought she could and “poof” she was gone. –Nalani
*And time never unfroze. –Rio
*She was in her room with her brother, Xander. –Liliana
*Four minutes later, the ice plane landed in a dangerous forest. –Kim
*I was at the big yard. –Andrea
*It all starts on a regular school day. –Marcus
*Snow, the princess, just jumped on Ice Blade, her pet horse, and headed to the lake. –Lauren
*After that, Fred lived happily ever after…in two places. –Sofia Marie
*The closet was empty! –Samy
*“Quiet! It’s not funny!” Mr. Seemorebutts said as he started to cry. “Waaaaa!” All the kids watched in horror. – Clair
*Without warning, a “KNOCK, KNOCK,” on the door. “For goodness sakes! Who could be awake in the middle of the night?” said Cat. –Sydney
*I was walking to my first class and I saw flying pigs, jumping chickens, and dancing cows. I thought I was going crazy, but at lunch, I saw vegetables doing karate and fruit reading. -Shira

If you are interested in a Catalina iMovie slideshow DVD, please have your child bring in a $15 donation to Core 3.

Visual Arts with Juliana: Our puppets are incredible! We are excited to share them with you and hope you can come to our Arts Share on Wednesday, December 12 from 10:30-11:30. The puppets, their process and the puppet makers will be available to share their journey from idea to puppet. We are still looking for a photographer parent to take portrait shots of the puppet maker and their puppet. Please contact Genie if you are interested.
6th Grade Math with Mimi: This week, we began working with percentages and how they are related to fractions and decimals. Using percentages, fractions, and decimals interchangeably will conclude our current math unit. HW is due 12/6. If your child gets stuck while doing HW, please don't stress. Just have them bring it to school for help. HW is provided as practice for students who find it helpful and/ or enjoy doing it.
6th Grade Math with Erin: The students are immersed in their geography project of designing their own dream room. They completed their scale models of the classroom and have now moved on to designing their own 625 square foot bedroom. They must draw the shape of their choosing to fit within that specific square footage. Once students have created their idea, they will transfer their plan to graph paper to make sure it is mathematically sound. Then they will begin figuring out the flooring, painting, and furnishing of their room on their $25,000 budget. We were fortunate to have Caleb and Simeon's dad come in this week to talk about his work as a developer. He brought in multiple sets of blue prints for the students to look over and talked about the process in reality - from artistic rendering, to blue prints, to meeting with the engineer to make sure the structure is sound, to visiting the building and safety department to make sure the design is up to code. It was very informative and definitely showed our students how what they are learning about is applicable to real life. Thanks Ken!
5th grade Math Workshop with Genie: We ended our large number addition and subtraction unit with some conversation on expanded notation and exponents. It's great because every student in our math group has solid strategies to solve large number subtraction problems. Story problems can lead to some challenges on what really needs to be solved. Please continue to talk through your real world math problems and share how you would solve them-even if you use the calculator. We have moved onto 3D geometry looking at how to know the volume of a box. Class work and homework from the last unit went home—please check your child's backpack to see their work.

Science with Mimi: Clinics received Code Cards with brief descriptions of sick patients on them. Clinics will work together to research, diagnose, and figure out appropriate treatments for their patients. Cooperative group work is one of the most difficult tasks for many students. One way we continue to work on this skill is by thinking about how to be tolerant and respectful of other points of views. For example, a group member might respectfully disagree and offer their own viewpoint by saying, "I can see your point, but what about....?" or "I thought of something totally different". Learning how to work with others in a productive and respectful manner is one of the keys to success in school and in the workplace.

Social Studies with Erin: This week we worked on our projects and also prepared for our Friday visit to the Skirball, "Creating the United States" exhibit. In terms of our projects, as I wrote in an email blast, the students have become very invested in their research. We have students connecting with USO groups to meeting veterans coming home from deployment, others who have researched bullying of gay teens and are thinking about starting an action group on campus. Our 3 groups of students studying homelessness have connected with Upward Bound House in Santa Monica and will soon be starting a "household items drive" to help the residents in their transitional housing program. Others have been volunteering with animal rescue groups, trying to help stray animals find loving homes. Our women's health care group is trying to arrange a field trip to Planned Parenthood LA and hoping to do some Peer Education. Another group is studying US involvement in South American drug cartels. It is very exciting! Your students are looking into their passions and becoming more knowledgeable and passionate about these issues in the process! To prepare for our Skirball visit we spent a few class periods looking at and learning about Primary Sources. What can one learn from a primary source as opposed to a textbook or non-fiction account? What are we looking for when we look at Primary Sources? What was the intent of the author? What was happening during that time period? We are all historians!

Reading and Writing Workshop with Genie: We had a wonderful Literary Essay Celebration where professional and sophisticated language was written and shared! We have begun Fantasy writing by focusing first on the main character—our hero/ heroine. We are also progressing in our book club discussions focusing on our individual hopes and dreams and by analyzing video clips of conversation. We will begin to encourage everyone to use post-its in their books to help build better conversation around books. We have also spent some of our time working on the Holiday Arts Boutique where your child's creativity and handy work will be on sale Friday, Dec 7 at the Holiday Arts Boutique! We hope you can volunteer or at least stop by and shop!

Homework:
5G math: packet #14. Due 12/7/12
6G math: HW is due 12/6
RW: read every day for 30-40 minutes (100 pages a week). This can include their book club reading!
WW: write 3 pages in your writing notebook per week!

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:

Hello Smash Community,

We'd like to take this opportunity to proudly congratulate Arati and her entire SMASH Arts & Letters team for creating, planning, publicizing and pulling off such an incredibly successful event.

For those of you who attended, you know what an amazing, inspiring, night it was, full of beautiful art, delicious food & wine all complemented by a crowd of parents representing schools from across the district. If you didn't make it to this one, don't miss the next one!

It was a huge success for many reasons:
The second-ever SMASH Arts & Letters Sale raised close to $11k for visual arts programs in elementary schools throughout SMMUSD (with $40 art, not an auction!)
We are the first school in the district to host an event in support of centralized fundraising and look forward to    attending events hosted by other schools
The event increased awareness of SMASH in our community at-large.
Members of the city council and school board attended.
Local and prominent artists contributed hundreds of works of art.

None of this would have been possible without the generosity of the following sponsors from our community:
Venue & Wine: Yahoo!
Raffle Items: Paul Velick, Aubrey Studebaker, Utrecht Art Supplies, Paint Lab
Food: Border Grill, Fairmont Miramar, Fig Restaurant, JiRaffe, La Vecchia, Lobster, Locanda del Lago, Michael’s, MisFit, Ocean & Vine at Loews, Tiato
Frames: LA Art Exchange
Balloons: La Pinata, Partyland

It takes a village and here's a list of some of those from our village who made it all happen: Arati, Mazi, Matt, Darren, Molly, Claire, Jessica, Helga, Jess, Nikki, Snow, Ben Rogers, Ben Karlin, Tina, Amber, Nina, April, Michelle, Jeannine, Marni Gittleman, Marni Ayers, Andrea, Kelly, Allison, Marsha, Claudia, Leah, John, Dan, Megan, Barbara, Holly, Ginger, Belinda and Matia.  Thanks for all your hard work!

Have a great weekend,
