It’s all about the popsicle (and you)!
Dear SMASH students, faculty, family and friends:
We are pleased to report that this year we again received over $18,000 in pledges.
SMASH’s athletes were supported by an amazing group of sponsors & volunteers who coached, DJ’d, tallied numbers, MC’d, picked up supplies, set up the course, designed posters, hung banners, counted laps, poured water, cut bagels, picked up trash, ran alongside, cheered and made it possible to give every athlete a t-shirt to commemorate the day.

We want to thank all of you and hope that everyone had as much fun at this year’s Jog-a-thon as we did. 100% of the money raised goes back into SMASH in the form of arts programs, supplies, alumni scholarships, teacher education, gardening, computers and more.

Pledge packets (showing how many laps your student ran and any money owed) will come home with each student. Please collect all outstanding pledges and turn in the money to the office or your Core teacher by Friday, 3/23.

Thanks again,
Darlene Flanders and Lillie Schlessinger

Jog-a-thon 2012 Co-chairs
PLEASE COLLECT ALL YOUR PLEDGES BY MARCH 23!
It is easy to pay your pledge online (via PayPal) by using this link: http://tinyurl.com/77lzpl9

Dear SMASHing Parents,

Last Saturday I attended the very positive, interesting and insightful forum “Making It Work: How to Establish a Successful Centralized Fundraising Program” at Roosevelt Elementary School. The forum featured Education Foundation, PTA and school district leaders from Irvine, Manhattan Beach and Palo Alto School Districts who shared their districts' implementation of successful centralized fundraising programs, along with the Beverly Hills school district which is currently transitioning to centralized fundraising. The Forum included both a panel discussion and a Q & A session, where panelists discussed their experience with both the transition and successful implementation of centralized fundraising in their school districts. This was a great opportunity to learn from others’ experience with centralized fundraising, and was an extremely positive look at how other districts have successfully transitioned to centralized fundraising. We learned that while many parents in all the districts initially experienced trepidation, this was soon extinguished as each districts centralized fundraising efforts allowed all the districts to raise more money together than they did as individual schools, which ultimately allowed each of the school districts to benefit each school to greater level than they were able to achieve as individual site fundraising units.

All of the school districts were faced with a need to find new ways to increase fundraising and to achieve greater equity between school sites. All of the districts created a partnership between the individual school PTA’s and their Education Foundation, where the Education Foundation became responsible for funding personnel and the PTAs would continue to pay for things like computers, copiers, supplies, etc. Not only were they interested in creating a professional approach to fundraising, but they needed to eliminate duplication of efforts between school sites who were making multiple requests to many of the same entities. Thus, fundraising campaigns were run together, and together the Education Foundation and PTAs achieved great success, which has resulted in increasing, sustainable fundraising growth. Palo Alto has had centralized fundraising for 10 years, and the partnership between school sites and their Education Foundation continues to grow and prosper. In Palo Alto, those parents who were the most concerned that their centralized fundraising plan would not be successful and feared there would be a leveling down of resources, programs and staffing are now their biggest supporters, because they have witnessed the continuing success centralized fundraising has achieved.

All who attended the forum learned that the transition to centralized fundraising requires a change in the culture of the individual school sites. While it was common for many parents to initially feel disenfranchised and pull back some of their efforts, it is important to grasp that every parent in the district has a responsibility to support their child’s education and it is not acceptable that some students should benefit more than others because they happen to attend a school where parents are more financially able to support their local school. Allowing large disparities in resources between schools was not acceptable to any of these districts. With all schools involved in a group effort, parental participation increased, fundraising increased and students benefited from the increase in programs and resources.

SMASH has a history of parental support and participation. We have a culture of social responsibility and group consciousness of leadership, creativity and innovation. The centralized fundraising plan needs the support and involvement of our SMASH family and every parent, teacher and student in our district, to work together with optimism and foresight to assure that transition to centralized fundraising in the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District is an outstanding success.

Meanwhile, we should give a huge expression of appreciation to Core 3 Moms, Lillie and Darlene, for their outstanding work putting on last Friday’s Jog-a-thon.
Dan McGee

GREEN TIP FOR THE WEEK
Don't Watch Water Go Down the Drain: Use large bowls of water instead of running water to rinse your fruit and veggies. Take it directly outside to water plants or transfer to a pitcher next to your sink to take out later. In the bathroom: Keep a bucket, pitcher, or watering can handy to save water while you are waiting for it to get hot. You will be surprised just how much perfectly good water can be reused or saved for watering plants. Up to several gallons a day or more!

Dear SMASH Family,

Only two more weeks until spring break – the perfect time to start thinking about SuperSMASH 2012! This year’s event will be early, on Saturday May 19, only nine more weeks away! If you’ve been at SuperSMASH before, you know it’s the place to play, eat and bid. And if you haven’t, get ready for a fun-filled day with carnival rides, entertainment, delicious food and an amazing silent auction.

The success of SuperSMASH in general and the Silent Auction in particular is as important as ever. This means we really need your help to make SuperSMASH and the Silent Auction the success we need!

Check the other side of this letter for some ideas to help you find donations for our silent auction. We are looking for donations from you, the talented SMASH community, as well as from local merchants to bring in as many donations as possible. We’ve included three Auction Donor Forms (with a letter to potential donors on the reverse). Take these forms to your favorite stores, restaurants, salons, or any business and ask for an item, gift certificate or service that can be auctioned off to benefit our school.

All donations are tax-deductible. Our tax ID is 95-4439445. The donor needs to fill out the form, and return it along with the donated item or certificate to Janice in the office. If you run out of forms, as we hope you will, see Janice for more copies.

Use this year’s spring break to go out and get as many donations as you can. Aim for at least three donations per family. Drop them off in the office right after spring break, by April 20, 2012.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ofer Grossman at 310-367-7504 or omglaw@live.com or Helga Schier at 310-828-8421 or helgaschier@verizon.net with any comments or questions. Thanks for participating in this fantastic community event!

Sincerely,
Ofer Grossman, SuperSMASH Silent Auction Chair

SuperSMASH Donor

Dear Sir or Madam,

On Saturday May 19, 2012, SMASH (Santa Monica Alternative School House) will host its annual SuperSMASH silent auction and carnival, with over 1,000 people attending. Celebrating more than 37 years, SMASH is a public school serving an ethnically and economically diverse K-8 student population. Our active community of instructors, parents, students and neighborhood members work tirelessly to forge new educational techniques in a progressive, non-competitive environment. Our school depends on the proceeds of the SuperSMASH silent auction and carnival to provide for teachers, teachers’ aides, and programs in art, science, and physical education for our children and to pay for sorely needed technology upgrades.

Continuing Severe Budget Cuts Are Directly Affecting Our Children
The State of California and the Federal government continue to make unprecedented budget cuts that are being felt directly in our classrooms, with no end in sight. In fact, depending upon the results of Governor Brown’s budget and tax initiatives on the November 2012 ballot, public schools could face billions more in immediate cuts. SuperSMASH is our chance to help offset some of those losses and provide our children with essential educational programs that are no longer paid for by the state or federal governments. In order for our children to be able to compete for the jobs and industries of our times, we need to out-educate the rest of the world. And, we cannot do so with the limited resources currently available to our public school system. The challenges we face are real, but with your help, they will be met. We ask you to choose
hope over fear in these tough economic times and to extend your generosity by contributing an item or gift certificate that can be auctioned at the Silent Auction. In the alternative, please consider making a donation to our school.

In appreciation for your support of our children, we will acknowledge your name and a description of your donation in the SuperSmash Silent Auction Catalog, and on a table poster at SuperSMASH. Your donation will also be acknowledged in the local daily newspaper, the Santa Monica Daily Press, with a readership of over 33,000. Your contribution is fully tax deductible (Tax ID No. 95-4439445) and greatly appreciated. To ensure that your company and item are included in our catalog, please return the attached donation form as soon as possible. Please contact Ofer Grossman at (310) 367-7504 or supersmash.auction@gmail.com with any comments or questions.

Thank you in advance for your thoughtful consideration.

Sincerely,
Ofer Grossman
